Hello there,
I wonder if someone on here would be kind enough to look up a birth entry for me for my G/G/G/Grandmother Charlotte Mary EDMEADES?
She married my G/G/G/Grandfather, Charles Hamilton in Frindsbury, Kent on the 16th February 1831. He was a Mariner, & they seem to have moved around a bit. Their daughter Ellen Hamilton, (my G/G/Grandmother, was born in Deptford, Kent in 1845.
So far, I know nothing about the Edmeades...
Hoping that someone will be able to help.
Best Wishes, Romilly.
:) :) :)

Hi Romilly
If it's this family, looks like she was born in Middlesex:
1851
4 Church Passage, Greenwich, Kent
Jane WEAVER head mar 23 pauper b.Blk Heath (Blackheath), Kent
Eliz'h 12 b.Oxford
Ann 10 b.Deptford
Ellen 8 b.Blk Heath
Luisa 4 b.Greenwich
Wm? KING visitor 1 b.Greenwich
Char't HAMILTON mar 45 (occupation hard to read but could be "Green'h .....? Pen'r wife" (Greenwich .....? pensioners wife) b.Middlesex
Ellen 5 b.Deptford
Ann HUGHES inmate wid 60 needlewoman b.St George East
HO107/1586 folio 83 page 1
If she did happen to be married and/or baptised in Frindsbury then you can view the parish registers online:

Many thanks for that Casalguidi,
I think I have found Ellen's family in 1861.
Father John Hamilton b.c. 1830 Dumfries Scotland is shown as married and a Master on vessels in Cornwall, whilst living in Camberwell is (I believe)
his wife and children . Wife Ellen is shown as 32 married and from Wandsworth Surrey, daughter Ellen aged 15, son William 14 both born Deptford, Kent.
10 years later in 1871 Ellen has left home as she married in 1868,her mother Ellen Hamilton, (née Edmeades) is living with son William at Woolwich Dockyard and still shown as married.
I still can't find a Birth Entry for Charlotte Mary Edmeades:-(
As she married in Frindsbury, Kent...I am assuming that she came from Frindsbury?
Can anyone on here see it?
Cheers, Romilly.

Am just revisiting this family again...and note that I have never found a Birth or Baptism entry for Charlotte Mary Edmeades.
Also note...on looking at Ellen Hamilton's Birth Cert, for September 1845, - that her father was CHARLES Hamilton, not JOHN(!)
And so I can't help wondering now if the Marriage that I have, (Feb 1831 in Frindsbury...is correct or not).
Any Help Welcomed!
Cheers, Romilly.

The witnesses to the marriage of Charlotte and Charles were Elizabeth LEVY and Richard GATES

Which Site are you looking at for that Bearkat?
Cheers, Romilly.

It's on Medway Cityark

Gosh...thanks for that Bearcat! :)
I note that they didn't need permission for the marriage, and so were presumably 'of full age'?
On their daughter Ellen Hamilton's Birth Cert in Deptford, Kent in 1845, it has 'x, - the mark of father', Charles Hamilton. And so I'm guessing that they must have been illiterate...and that those signatures are not their own?
I still can't find Charlotte Mary Edmeades Birth or Baptismal Record:-(
Many Thanks for the help,
Romilly.

I think the register was signed by Charles and it's quite an accomplished signature.
Everyone on that page who couldn't write has X her/his mark

I haven't found a baptism for Charlotte EDMEADES yet.
There are a fair few EDMEADES around North Kent and some were quite wealthy.

Very interesting Site Bearkat, - thanks for the Link.
Oh dear...if casalguidi is right...and that is the right Charlotte Hamilton on the 1851 Census, then she must have married down:-( She seems to be living in a house full of paupers in Greenwich:-(
I don't know how accurate the 1851 Census was on ages, - but it has Charlotte as 45yrs in 1851; which would make her Birth about 1806? However, I van't see any entries for her Christening/Baptism on any of the Sites that I've looked at. Very frustrating!

The 1841 census gives her county of birth as Kent :-\
Charles HAMILTON 50 Mariner born Kent
Charlotte 38 born Kent
Arthur 7 born Kent
HO107 piece 488 folio 8/4 page 1

Hmmm...very difficult to know whether this is them or not.
Charles Hamilton does seem to consistently be Charles on other documentation, - (Marriage and daughter Ellen's Birth Cert).
Also...(if the ages are correct) Charlotte had Ellen in 1845, and William in 1846/7; which, if she was 38 in 1841...would mean those births took place in her mid 40's(?)
He's a Mariner on the Wedding Details, and so its quite likely that he's overseas on some of the Censuses. That entry from the 1851 Census has one of the people listed as 'Inmate', - I wonder if that is some sort of Workhouse, etc?
Romilly.

Sorry, it should read Charles.

Sorry, it should read Charles.
Right...that probably is them then(!)
It still seems strange that I can't find any Birth or Christening for her.
Thanks for the help,
Romilly.

Kent is poorly covered by the IGI. There are many new records on Familysearch and Freereg but I stiill can't see her baptism.
You could try searching through Medway Cityark which has the C of E parish records for Medway. It could be a long trawl. :-\

Thanks for the advice.
I might try looking for her Death first...and then work back.
Cheers, Romilly. :)

FreeBMD has a death for a Charlotte HAMILTON March quarter 1860 Greenwich
No middle name and no age. ???

I can't see her on the 1861 Census though...and so that could be her.
Sad though...she must have still been in her 50's:-(

A kind person pointed out this as a possible Baptism for Charlotte:
Name: Mary Charlotte Edmeads
Parish: Christ Church
County: Surrey
Borough: Southwark
Parent(s): Adgate Edmeads,
Mary Edmeads
Record Type: Baptism
Register Type: Parish Register
Date looks like 31 July 1803?
And its for Mary Charlotte, not Charlotte Mary...
However, her father's name is Adgate Edmead, - and Charlotte's eldest son was Arthur Adgate Hamilton!
Romilly :)
