Hi
I'd be very grateful if someone could please look up for me:
Harriet(t) Rees. Not sure if she has one T or two T's in her name (records vary). Her maiden name is VICK, so she might still be a Vick in 1841/1851
She was born in 1822 in Tetbury, Glos.
I'm trying to find out the name of her husband. On the 1861 and 71 censuses she is widowed and living with her brother Joseph Vick in Tetbury.
Can anyone help me trace her further back?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Suzanne!
Just a bit of additional info that I hope you find useful....
The International Genealogical Index shows that Harriet was 6 years old when she was christened at Tetbury on 27th Nov 1827 and that she was the daughter of Samual and Sarah Vick.
Her siblings were christened on the same day and they were...
Joseph aged 9
Sarah aged 18
John aged 22
Best wishes for the New Year.

Happy New Year to you too xx

Hi Suzanne
Greetings from New Zealand. I would like to correspond with you. I believe we are researching the same families. Samuel and Sarah Vick are my GGGG grandparents. I descend via John Vick - his daughter Charlotte Vick marries James Jones. Their son Charles & wife Elizabeth emigrate to NZ.
Regards
Nicola

Just as a matter of interest Capetown, are you providing all that information for the member who raised the original enquiry in 2005 and hasn't been on Rootschat for over ten years, or for the new member Nicola who wanted to contact her after all this time?
-
Thanks so much Capetown. I have managed to compile some of this information already. I was hoping to touch base with Suzanne as she may already have answers to my questions.
However, you may be able to assist further. Still trying to link some family members together.
My GGGG grandfather is John Vick. Found his baptism (as an adult - age 22) as 30 November 1827, in Tetbury. Parents are listed as Samuel & Sarah Vick.
Siblings Sarah (age 18), Joseph (aged 9) and Harriet (age 6) are also baptised on the same day.
I have located baptism for Maria Vick as 9 August 1802, in Chipping, Sodbury and Mary Ann Vick as 12 June 1823 (I believe this could be an adult baptsim) in Aynho, Northamptonshire.
A write up in the Chletenham Chronicle - 4 Jan 1827 confirms that Mary Ann is the second daughter of Samuel Vick, cooper. She marries Robert Butler.
Robert dies in 1835 leaving Mary Ann with four children. Mary Ann remarries Timothy Neems.
Maria marries James Melsome (Milsom) in 1826. James dies in 1833 and Maria marries Thomas Stubbs.
The mysteries I am trying to solve are:
(1)Benjamin Vick is a witness at Maria Vick's marriage to James Melsome. Benjamin marries Jane Vizer in Bristol on 10 May 1829. They have two children Robert (1830) and Henry Vizer (1832). Jane dies in 1833 and Benjamin dies in 1839 aged 35.
I have only been able to confirm the marriage date from Ancestry.com. Not able to find a baptism entry for Benjamin, and he is not around for the 1841 census.
Is Benjamin a son of Sarah & Samuel Vick??
(2)I also have another Samuel Vick that I am trying to confirm belongs to Sarah & Samuel. Have not been able to find a baptism record.
Samuel marries Eliza Mitchell in Somerset on 23 April 1833. Writing is a bit difficult to read, but believe it is Sarah Vick (sister) that is a witness. Future census information states he is from Tetbury, occupation a Tailor.
(3)Sarah Vick, the mother. Does not show in the 1841 census. So looking for death date prior to 1841?
(4)Sarah, the daughter. Again not able to find in census, nor any marriage or death entry. I have found a newspaper article from the Gloucestershire Chronicle 25 April 1835, stating a "Sarah Vick was found dead in her bed". (This article could be either mother or daughter)
A Sarah Lock does sign as witness to Harriet Vick's marriage to William Rees in 1855. Unable to confirm who she is.
(5)Assumption has been made that the Sarah Jennings & Samuel Vick marriage in 1807 are the parents. However what does not fit is both Maria & Benjamin (if he fits this family) are born before 1807.
Any assistance on these sticking points would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Nicola

I think the witnesses at Harriet VICK's marriage to William REES in 1855 is not Sarah LOCK, but possibly Sarah COOK.
On Gloucestershirebdm
There is a birth of a Samuel COOK - mother's maiden name : VICK
District Stroud 1843
Had a quick look at my Marriage Index CD

Eliza - 29 July 1827 - residence: OCKERHILL
Elizabeth - 5 May 1833 - ditto

Caldwell
Samuel COOK - 40-44 born Gloucestershire

Eliza COOK - 15-19
Esther COOK - 10

Hope this helps???

Have you used on Ancestry
'All UK, Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures, 1710-1811 and searched for VICK in Gloucestershire' ??? or Gloucestershire Wills
As Samuel VICK was a Cooper (a family tradition in families, as was the case in my husband's lineage for many generations in Cirencester ).... and in my lineages, Wheelwrights again in Gloucestershire, I have found useful information this way.
e.g. Searching for VICK in Chipping Sodbury Gloucestershire
Master's Name: John VICK - residence, Chipping Sodbury 1783
Apprentice Name: Moses AMOS
another Apprentice in 1797, John D THOMAS
and another in 1801, Henry BATEMAN
in 1803 at Chipping Sodbury,
Wm STEPHENS had Josh VICK as an Apprentice
If you transcribe to Ancestry, you can open the view the images and see the occupations they are apprenticed to.
....
A Saml VICK in 1802 appears to be an Apprentice in Wallingford, Berkshire to Mr A Atherton and a Mr C Venimore
-
Thanks again Capetown.
Had a look at some of the information. There possibly could be a link between John Vick, a cooper and my Samuel Vick. Samuel's son John, my GGGG grandfather, was also a cooper.
Through newspapers discovered that Elizabeth, John's wife dies in 1834. John dies in 1840.
I am hopeful that the Tetbury Advertiser or another Tetbury newspaper may be accessible via British Newspapers Online one day.
Thank you so much for your assistance.

Briefly 'popped' into our local library today to use 'Free Ancestry' and had a quick look at the Will of John VICK 1840, Cooper of Chipping Sodbury (should have run a copy off, but was in a hurry)....
This is a very clear Will and starts off almost immmediately mentioning his brother Samuel, - respected friend, Henry STINCHOMBE of Hawkesbury
Sons:
Nathaniel
John
Joseph
daughters:
Mary Elizabeth MORLEY (who married John 28 November 1836)
Elizabeth VICK
Sarah MILLS
Nephews
Samuel VICK & Charles VICK - sons of his brother James VICK
-
Thanks Capetown.
I found the copy of the will for John Vick yesterday. I also have one for a Samuel Vick.
There are factors in each one that fit the puzzle, but others that do not.
I am beginning to think that there are brothers John, Samuel, James & Joseph, plus no doubt they will have sisters. My Samuel belongs to one of them.
The closest baptism entry I have found for a Samuel Vick is 1786 at Randwick. "Samuel, son of Anne Vick". Should John that is a cooper, be Anne's brother, then it does make sense that Samuel may follow his occupation.
I have not found a Samuel with father James Vick that fits. Do find that transcription of the name is incorrect sometimes - Vick can be recorded as Rich, Pick, Vich, Rick, Veck.
If we can go back 3-4 more generations, no doubt they are all connected.
