Not exactly a workhouse wedding - they were married in the Register Office. But I've discovered that a couple in the line I'm tracing, John Tomlinson and Elizabeth Hall, were married on 11/11/1845 in Gainsborough, and the marriage is entered in the Gainsborough Union Workhouse minute book - presumably because one of them was an inmate. I'm pretty sure it wasn't John. Does anyone have access to the 1841 census for the area, to see whether Elizabeth was an inmate then?
Many thanks.

Hi,
Just joined and came across your post - my Tomlinson interest is around Gainsborough and Torksey too, but not this early I don't think!
Anyway, neither of your people are shown on 1841 Gainsborough Workhouse, but then things changed so quickly then - he/she could have been in for a short time around that wedding date!
Happy FH'ing!

I would guess it is very unlikely the bride and/or groom were inmates when they married as men and women were kept totally separate. More likely they worked there.

Hi, Angi, I think we've corresponded about Tomlinsons. Thanks for the information.

Hi Suttontrust
Gainsborough Workhouse is listed on HO107/634/4 but I cannot see either John or Mary on there.
I notice that their parish is stated as Torksey on the marriage notice and did find these 2 families in Torksey.
HO107/647/8
Robert Hall 53, Ag Lab
Esther 55
Elizabeth 20
Alice 12
All born in county.
HO107/647/2
Timothy Tomlinson 50, Ag Lab
Mary 50
John 25, Ag Lab
Ann 20
All born in county except Mary
There is another John Tomlinson in Torskey but he is already married to Mary 20 with a daughter Mary Ann aged 1.
Hope this helps.
Sheila
