Hello

In case nobody can help you directly in order to narrow this down somewhat you may wish to check their death entries in this full index online http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ which is a pay per view site.

Hi ,
I had a look for Ralph Picton in the 1841 census, found one, but married to a Jane, no sign of Benjamin. Are there any other children that you know of?

Hi Margaret,
Although most names don't match, its worth keeping this family on file, as Ralph Picton is an unusual name.

1841 census. HO107/725/4/6. 2 Gun Square. Aldgate. London.

Ralph Picton 35  Carpenter   born in county, no
Jane             28                                             yes
James          14  Machinist                               "
Esther         14                                               "
Elizabeth    10                                               "
Hannah        8                                               "

As Jane is to young to be the mother of James and Esther, she could be the sister of Ralph.

Cissellby.

The spelling (at least by census enumerators) is more common with a k. On the 1851 census it is either Pickton or Peckton.

1851 HO107 1541 folio 119
Batholomew Place Bethnal Green  Middlesex
Ralph 48  Warrington, Lincolnshire,  Head  Married Carpenter
Jane  43  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, Wife Married
Robert  3  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, Son

1861 census RG 9 256 folio 89
36 Barnsley Street Bethnal Green St Matthew  Middlesex
Ralph Picton 50?  Warrington, Lancashire, Head  Married Carpenter
Jane Pickton 48  London,  Wife Married
Robert Pickton 13  London, Son  Bethnal Green

From FreeBMD
Marriages Sep 1838
PICKTON  Ralph     Shoreditch  2 299
one possible spouse could be
SPRING  Jane     Shoreditch  2 299

Is this Benjamin?

1851 census HO107 1635 folio 175
Takleway? Hastings All Saints  Sussex
Benjn Pickton 27  Wren?, Middlesex,  Head  Married Carpenter
Ellen Pickton 27  Ireland Wife  Married
Thomas M Pickton 4  Hackney?, Middlesex,  Son
Elizabeth Pickton 3  Hackney, Middlesex, Daughter
Ellen Pickton 1  Hastings, Sussex, Daughter

What information does Benjamin's marriage certificate give about his father's occupation? Was he a carpenter?

Kensal Green Cemetery could tell you if Ralph was buried in the same grave as Benjamin but not if he was buried elsewhere in the cemetery, unless you had a date for them to check against.

Valda

Hi,

On Benjamins marriage cert Ralph Pickton is his  father and a carpenter,
the witnesses are Ralph and Jane Pickton, now on the latter day saints site Benjamins parents are Ralph Picton and Elizabeth, I also have a ralph pickton and Elizabeth Evans having these 3 children (benj's siblings) Jane born 1830. Mary Anne 1822 and James Andrew 1828. Was Ralph married twice or did Elizabeth die, and Jane Pickton is benjaminsor Ralphs  sister? I think on the 1881 census there is a Jane Veal living with the Benjamin Picton family could this be Jane Pickton? yes the name has been pecton, pickton and picton , also pigton and pigton!

Thanks for all your help
Margaret.

Jane Veal lodging with the Pickton's in 1881 was 75 unmarried and born in Wimbledon.
There is a Ralph Pickton marriage on the IGI to Elizabeth Evans in Coventry in 1821 and another to Jane Spring 9th July 1838 at St. Leonard's Shoreditch. The children's baptisms on the IGI are between 1822-1830 all in the London area. Their parents are Ralph and Elizabeth which doesn't actually prove that their mother was Elizabeth Evans. The marriage in 1821 is a strong candidate particularly since it seems this Ralph Picton was from Lancashire so may have worked his way south. If Ralph did marry twice you are lucky because his second marriage was in 1838 and will name his father and his occupation which will help with tracing Ralph in Warrington.
