Hi Andrea,

I searched the Bovingdon parish records for the period 1835-1850 but regret found no baptism entry for Maria Freeman.    The only Freeman during that period was for Ann d/o Sarah Freeman born 27May1835 bap 02Sep1835.

Yes if you have the details from the actual marriage certificate or the entry in the parish register. I thought you must have that because you knew Maria's father was called John Freeman (if you were illegitimate and you could get away with it you often gave your father's details as having the same surname as your own).

It might also be worth obtaining the details of Dorcas' marriage in 1856 or the Maria Kemp birth (if it is the correct registration) to see if Dorcas maiden name was Menton. Either of these would help prove the census information - that is if it is the correct Maria.

hi
my brother copied the details ( about 15 or so  years ago)

from parish records in watford i think

but he did not write them down the witnesses
as we did think it necessary .we just wanted a date and parents .

we now have access to census, bmd entries  etc on line

i did not think to re check my early research  and buy certificate .
i will probably buy both the birth you have found,  dorcas marriage  and maria marriage this week

thank you again for your help in tracing maria

i had forgotten my own advise double check my reasearch .

Forgive my ignorance because I'm still quite new here and still trying to navigate my way around.

How do I find my way to the board with the on-going discussions about the Freeman's?   I'm having trouble with my Freeman ancestors from Hertfordshire.

Thanks

Hi Andrea

Yes, I'm a member of the Genes Reunited site and it was probably me talking about the Freeman's. I've posted several messages on their tips board.

Your suggestion to start a chat on Rootschat is a good one, which I will do. It's one of the few things left that I haven't yet tried.

Thanks again

Lyndsey

Hi Andrea,

I found the 1861 marriage entry on the Bovingdon PRs  -

Henry Taylor 22 Bach Labourer of Bovingdon  F. Matthew Taylor Labourer
Maria Freeman  18 Spinster of Bovingdon  F. John Freeman Labourer
were married by banns on 12th October 1861.
Witnesses William Fountain and Susan Taylor.
All four made their marks.

There was no trace of an 1856 Freeman/Kemp marriage or 1844 baptism for Maria Kemp in the Bovingdon PRs.

Hi
thanks that realy great

the christenning of dorcas  fits in great with the marriage details,  father John merridon and  the Age is right  when she married John kemp

what do you now think of the first marriage we found to thomas Freeman in 1831  ( denten)
do you think it is another  mis spelling of the surname

Dorcas must have married some one freeman for on  her  marriage certificate  to john kemp ( after the children were born) she listed herself asdorcas freeman widow  in 1856 .

thank you again for your help
i will try and piece it all together .

thank you again it looks like it is her marriage

so when she married maria`s father in 1856 that is why freeman was used as a surname

Hi Andrea,

I checked the Bovingdon parish records today and their version of the 1831 marriage is   ...

THOMAS FREEMAN bachelor OTP and DORCAS MENTON spinster OTP were married by banns on 19th April 1831 at Bovingdon.  Witnesses James Durrent and Joshua Baldwin.

Going back to earlier  replies

i now think this is the father of Thomas freeman who was  Dorcas Merridon
1st husband  father

IGI has his Christening 1812  in Hemel Hempstead

Fanny Merridon above  ( daughter off Thomas and Ann Freeman  christened 1814  Great Gaddesden, Hertford)

Shown on the 1841 census married Dorcas Brother William Merriton

i am now trying to find out  about Thomas freeman and  Wife Ann

is this Thomas married to Ann Ghast 13 Feb 1802 Hemel Hempstead

as the families seem to interlinked

hope this makes sense

Hi Andrea,

I didn't realise that you didn't already have this information.

Yes that Freeman family from Bovingdon on 1841 is Thomas Freeman & his wife Ann Ghast/ Ghost.  The IGI extracted has the surname as Ghast but she is also know as Ann Ghost.

Hi Andrea,

I have been very lucky to have had some wonderful information sent me regarding the Freeman-Merriden connection in Bovingdon by a very experienced family history researcher to whom I am greatly indebted for her help and assistance.

Regarding Jas aged 14 & Ann aged 3 on the 1841 Census, this is what I have.

Jas is a shortening for James.
James Freeman son Thomas Freeman & Anne Ghost born Bovingdon, Herts 18 August 1827.  Christened 20 August 1827 (private baptism) Bovingdon, Herts.

Ann Freeman born 27 May 1838 is the grandchild of Thomas Freeman & Ann Ghost.  Her mother Sarah Freeman was born abt 1819 & christened Jan 1819 in Hemel Hempstead is  the child of Thomas & Anne Freeman.  Sarah Freeman married the father of Ann, James Final in Bovingdon, on 26 Jan 1845.

The above information was taken from PR's by Patrica Ward.
