Who Do You Think You Are? 9PM BBC2

Its Sheila Hancock tonight folks on Who Do You Think You Are? at 9pm, BBC2. I havnt read much about this one which in a way is good because it will be more of a suprise.

There is also Family Ties BBC4 at 10pm.
Another programme that may appeal to some RootsChatters is A Passion For Churches. BBC 2, 7.30 pm. The first 2 were really good and I think this one is about a chap restoring a church in Norfolk.
My favourite night of the week.

Its going to be a tricky one Romilly. You have between 8 and 9, depending on how long you run for I suppose.
Its my daughters Brownie night so I have to fit it in around picking up a car full of giggling girls. At least I will get to watch the first one in peace.

I shall be watching it Limney-Sheila allways comes across as such a classy lady/down to earth and I like her immensely.  She seems as if she would be quite as happy to have a glass of champagne or a pint of ale.  My type of lady!  I hope my judge of character doesn't prove me wrong and my view of her doesn't change after tonights programme - we shall see.

Apparently she discovers an energetic business woman in her tree, or so its just said on the BBC trailer. It dosnt give much else away which is a good thing.
I agree wheeldon, she always seems a really interesting sort of lady who comes across as really friendly and who you could invite round for a cuppa and a good chat.
Cant wait. Things are looking good. One son is at band practice, the other is at the gym. The 8 year old should be in bed but will probably end up gagged and tied up in the understairs cupboard. Only joking everyone!!!!

Abuse, abuse at Linmeys house!!!!!!!!!!!!  Only joking too - made me laugh.  I'm OK as football is on the other side-praise the lord for the TV in the bedroom.

My child is also safely gagged and tied up in the cupboard-I've given her a candle and a bowl of gruel just incase the social services decide to interupt my TV viewing!

Fascinating stuff Tricia. Its amazing what one mans vision can achieve. Rather sad it was all taken out of his hands, but the wall paintings were awesome.(to quote my teenage son).

Now that was an interesting programme, I really sympathised with Sheila at the grave of Madame Zurhorst, I found the grave of my 5 x gr grandmother in the summer and had a quiet weep.  It is quite moving.

Sheila has a most interesting background!

Just seen the Sheila Hancock episode, and thought it was really very good and cohesive.   There's nothing quite like starting out with a mystery photo or in this case a portrait, and ending up peering at an old gravestone in a churchyard...
One item right at the start of the programme really amused me.  She was in the Carpenter's Arms in the Kings Cross area of London where she'd lived when a little girl.  Sometimes I stop in there for a reviving pint after a visit to the FRC.  The first time I ever settled my pint down on the table there I couldn't understand why the beer was shaking and vibrating ever now and again - till I realised it was the tremble of the London Underground, and Tube Trains rumbling right under the pub.
I'm surprised she didn't remember that as a child...

Hi there,

I found the Sheila Hancock one fascinating, but was more moved by the BBC4 "Family Ties" Prog afterwards. It had a particular resonance for me, because it was about how parental death (wasn't) explained to children in the 1950's. The lady featured had lost her mother in 1958, & her father had never spoken to her about what happened. My father died in the 1950's, & just like in the programme, it was never spoken about...

I gather that this was how death was dealt with in the 1950's, but as the programme showed...it left lasting scars on the children affected in this way.

Gosh (or words to that effect !!).

What with Sheila and then Family ties on BBC4, I feel quite emotional.

That was even better than the Paxman one last week, and I enjoyed seeing Sheila's interest and enthusiasm as she found out more.  Another convert, I reckon.  She'll be on Rootschat next.  ;D ;D ;D

Did notice another "dressmaker" though and still no "nudge, nudge, wink, wink".

Can't wait for next week, who is it next time?

Wow,

Again, I welled up seeing Sheila, at the grave of Madame Zurhorst (don't tell anyone). She really got into it didn't she! Bless her.

I really felt that we shared a journey of discovery with Sheila, what a lovely lady, and from what a great lineage.

Both programmes absolutely rivetting. Better than last week and very moving.
Yes, also noticed the dressmaker. Well, she probably was!!!!
I didnt need to put the 8 year old in a cupboard because she was really interested, before she fell asleep that is.

My only criticism would be where they put forward the IGI as the source of all church records pre statutory registration .... a useful tool yes and also a potential minefield.

It really was a good programme, and I agree this series is starting out to be better than the last.  Sheila Hancock came across as really interested to find her roots, I reckon she is going to be a convert, I wondered if she posted her "Zurhorst" query here?

Well done the Beeb.

No she didn't (just done a search).  Anyway the screen didn't look like RootsChat.

Back to the thread, it was a very good programme - I was shouting "look in the trade directories next" just before they did!

Trystan should tell the Beeb to get his researcher on here!

Unfortunately, I missed last last night's programme [HE was watching the football] - and it sounds as if it was VERY good - but did see last week's with Jeremy Paxman, which I enjoyed.  This series is much better than the 1st, I have to agree.

Really want to see the Jane Horrocks one where her family "emigrated" to Rawtenstall, Lancashire to find work in the 1860s, as I have a parallel with that in my mother's PALMER family.

Does anyone know if the programme is available on the internet aka BBC Radio - Listen Again where you can listen to most radio programmes again for upto a week afterwards on the BBC website?

Very good programme, I really like the focus on why she agreed to do it.  It's such an obsessive hobby I forget why I do it sometimes.

I do have one niggle about the programme and would be interested in your thoughts.  When they show the tree they show parents under the married name fro the wife.  That narks me I think it should be shown as a union of 2 distinct families i.e. the wife is under her maiden name.

Maybe Scottish research makes me think differently - dunno  ???

I got a lump in the throat when she found the grave as well.  That's my favourite bit actually going to cemeteries and introducing myself to the family  ;D

The narration on th eprogramme didn't step by step enough for me they seemed to jump from one census entry to a cert.  It's more realistic to gather all census material to isolate most info profitable cert?

Heyho - tiny niggles.  It's my favourite night as well!

Pam

When the subject of the programme was reading her "mothers death certificate" she was actually looking at a GREEN marriage certificate?

I found Family Ties most moving and wanted to offer our family to the poor woman and give her a big hug, what an unnecessary lot of suffering for her,

Hi Jakky,

I agree entirely with your comments re: "Family Ties"...I really empathized with that poor woman:-(

But I think that that is how (parental) death was dealt with at that time.

While there is a great deal in what you say I don't think it was just that .... I think she was seriously affected by her father's behaviour .
He was obviously traumatised by his wifes sudden illness and demise and to then be accused by the very people who should have been supporting him and his daughter of being responsible for the death was obviously too much. He cut himself and his daughter off completely from that family but never recovered from the death enough to realise what it had done to his daughter.

Post by: linmey on Thursday 19 January 06 20:35 GMT (UK)
We dont really know much of what he was like before her death do we! Even in the wedding photo the twins commented on his serious expression(or was that after his wifes death). They obviously remembered him as a stern chap I got the impression. It worried me that he said to his daughter that they didnt need anyone else. Perhaps he resented her family being such a big part of his wifes life.

What a shame they didn't track her older brother down. They only mentioned him once saying they had "long since lost contact".

Then again maybe they did track him down and he either didn't want to see her or be on the programme.

To me he seemed the obvious person to track.

The only thing I was slightly disappointed with was that they didnt take the family back as far as they did with Jeremy Paxman. I know it was very brief, at the end of his programme, but it did give a brief history of the location of the Paxman family and the origens of the name etc.
This is only me being pickey but it would have been nice to know perhaps more about the Dutch background of the original Mr Zurhorst. I guess they did all they could manage in an hour and there was such an interesting story to tell that they couldnt fit anymore in.
Perhaps we should suggest to the Beeb that the next series programmes are 2 hours. That should suit us nicely!!!!

Werll I think so but I am addicted to genealogy and books so.....

but there are loads of useful addresses in the back and each chapter is on a different aspect of life ie 'earning a crust' .  It seems to follow the particular themes picked up in each of the 6 programmes, ie so far Jeremy - migration and Sheila - everyday life.
