Hi Chris in 1066

Thank you for the information. Although none of the Henrys in your find were "my" Henry, (my great great great grandfather). you did give me a date of death for his wife, Martha. I knew that she passed in 1853 but did not have the month nor day.

My line came to Lewes in about 1820 or so, when henry left the army, (10th Hussars) after 17 years service. His son, George, came here, to Canada in 1857. Two other sons were "transported in 1834 and 1839 to Taz. The remaining 5 sons remained in Lewes and as far as I know, there are descendent's there to this day.

Henry and Martha had 8 sons and no daughters.

Again, thank you for your help. :)

Hi Chris in 1066

I am afraid that the only burrial info that I have on Old Henry is that he was either buried or passed away on March 17, 1861 and was interred at St John Sub Castro. I do know, however that he was born in Cranley, (Cranleigh), Surrey in 1782 and settled with his family, (Martha and 2 sons, at the time), in Lewes about 1817-18. They had 6 more sons, all born in Lewes and all christened at All Saints, starting in 1818. In 1841, they lived on West St and then, according to the 1851 census, they lived at 19 St John St. His occupation in Lewes was listed as Town Carrier. (I would guess that would be "Town Crier"). As Martha died in 1853, I wonder if they would even be buried together.
Are you aware of any other cemeteries in Lewes where they would have planted people back then.
Thanks again, :)

His occupation in 1851 is Carrier (Town) - Global Mod

Hi Mike

You asked:
Are you aware of any other cemeteries in Lewes where they would have planted people back then

Where should I start

St John Sub Castro
All Saints
St Michael at South Malling
St John the Baptist, Southover
St Thomas a Beckett in the Cliff (Old Town)
St Michael in the High Street (Roman Catholic)
Weslyean Chapel
St Annes without
and of course the Cemetary for burials from the whole town c1850 onwards

Found this one in the 1841 for St John the Baptist, but he has all girls, obviously not the one

GANDER Henry, 35, Coal Porter
............  Harriett, 31
............  Harriett, 10
............  Jane,8
............  Elizabeth, 6
............  Martha, 4
............  Denese, 2
............  Sarah, 6 months
All born in Sussex

Will keep looking for the other Henry

Hi Chris,

Oh my! That is quite a list. Thank you, kindly, for your time. I will check back from day to day. It is confusing, that the info that I have on Henry shows him to be at St. John Sub Castro, (as is his wife, Martha), yet there are no records of him being there.
Thanks again for your help and quick responses.

Hi Mike

Henry is there in St John Sub Castro after all - when I transcribed the burial registers for this church back in 1998, I did it as follows

1861   March   1   Greening   Helen Eliza   f      0.3
1861   March   3   Basfield   Elizabeth   f      26
1861   March   3   Stronach   James   m      31
1861   March   10   Weller   Joseph   m      67
1861   March   13   Buckman   John   m      50
1861   March   13   Chatfield   Joseph   m      4.5
1861   March   18   Gardner   Henry   m      81
1861   March   23   Page   Frances   f      18
1861   March   24   Terry   Mary   f      7
1861   March   30   Trash   Maria   f      28
1861   March   31   Brazier   Ann   f      70
As you can see, I mistook Gander for Gardener - very very sorry.

It was not spotted as I put the registers into an Excell database and sorted by surname - it was only when I sorted them back into date order and looked for March 1861 that I spotted my transcription mistake.

Once again Mike, apologies for that mistake.

George

Do you have the 1851 census entry for your Henry Gander and Martha.

It lists some of their grand children

Incidentally, Henry is listed as Carrier (Town)  which means he carted goods around the town of Lewes, not Town Crier as you thought

Sorry about that

Hi Chris in 1066

Yes, that is my Henry. OK, so he IS at St John Sub Castro.
That one listing, where you show him on West St. Is that taken from the 1841 census? I don't have any copies of British census at all but did find out, from another source, his addresses at the time of the 41 and 51 census. The children that you have listed are all Henry and Martha's. The other 4 boys have, either been transported or are, by this time, serving with the 52nd Regt.
I do have some info that Henry and Martha did have some grandchildren living with them as well as a daughter in law. I believe that they were with Thomas the youngest son. (Daughter in law should be listed as a Jane or Lucy?)
A town carrier! All this time, I was thinking it was town crier!
Chris, do you know of a site where I could download a copy of the 1841 and 1851, (Gander portion only), census?
By the way! Henry was born in Cranley, Surrey and Martha, in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Thank you, once again, for you input and help.

You can find them in the 1881 census yourself as it is on line at

Chris,

Thank you, very much. That info is enough to get me going for a while. I do have a lot of info on William Gander and Charity (Carr). I actually have had contact with one of their descendants.
With what you gave me yesterday and today, I have enough to keep me busy for a bit.
Thank you, also, for the link to the later census reports. I will save that addy and get to it later.
