I need some help in finding out who my g grandfathers 4 brothers served with in WW1.
I know my great grandfathers details.
He was a Pioneer, 33rd Div. Signal Coy. Royal Engineers.
He was killed in 1915. I have all the details of this and his medals are in our family.
He had four brother Daniel, James, John and Walter Munn.
All from Duntocher, Scotland (just outside Glasgow)
I do not know who they served with, if they died in action or what.
I have looked on CFC and medal roll on kew archives, but there are several who could be them ???
Is there anyway I could narrow down my search.
I know the year they were born, but as in my g grandfathers case, most of the ages are down as "0"
I am going to Kew on Friday with my father.
To at least get Andrew Munn's war records, medal rolls, would there be any notes on how he died etc???
Thank you

Hi Pettsy! - long time no see!! ;)
Heres a couple of ideas!!
check out the search for all of your men !
http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14
Then check out the medal cards - just a suggestion - I would check to see if they were in the same regiment - I had a quick check and theres Daniel James John and Walter all in the Highland Light Infantry!

Hi Annie ;D
Hello again.
That sounds promising, all in the same reg.
I wonder why Andrew was in a different one if it is them.
I will have a look now.
Thanks.
Pettsy ;)

pettsy
would 'Old Kilpatrick' be close or in Duntocher?
if so i think i've found three of yours
-
Hi Annie I have had a look.
It could be them, if it was Daniel Munn, he also was killed.
Some other war dead had the parents names so I knew they were not the ones.
I will ask my dad and see what he thinks, but without knowing who they served with it will all be guess work.
Unless there are records which name their parents.
Thanks Annie.

Hi Harribos, yes it is very near.
Duntocher is in the parish of Old Kilpatrick.
Pettsy :)
-
ok, well it looks like three didn't survive the war
i'll post the records to this thread over the next few minutes or so
-
Thank you Harribobs,
How sad!!
I know my great grandfather died Andrew Munn in France 1915.
I look forward to seeing what you have found.
Thank you

there are four Johns
one greenock, one belfast, one kilmarnock, one london
only John from kilmarnock has a glasgow enlistment/residence
-
Hi I had family from Kimaronock, which is up near Bonhill and Balloch.
The other Kilmarnock is down from Glasgow.
I am not from Scotland, but learning fast ;D
Did you find Andrew on there too?
Thank you
Pettsy
-
well in which case, here is the John Munn from Kilmarnock
-
and Andrew
-
I hope it isn't John and he got out alive and well!
-
Do you have this??
In Memory of
Pioneer A MUNN
49202, 33rd Div. Signal Coy., Royal Engineers
who died
on 16 September 1915
Remembered with honour
CITE BONJEAN MILITARY CEMETERY, ARMENTIERES
Annie :)
-
Thank you Harribobs, I hope it isn't him.
I will have to get the census out and check his place of birth.
I know their mother was from Kilmaronock, but she died in 1906 before they were killed.
And I know their dad died in 1945, so he was alone with the two daughters and John if he survived.
Annie thank you, you have been such a help to me these last through days.
I really wish I could take you with us ;)
I will pm you when I get back. :)
Can you give me the link where you put in where born etc so I can check the other side of my family.
PS yes Annie I have that, I have a photo of Andrew too.
I added to the silentcities website.
He is buried in CITE BONJEAN MILITARY CEMETERY, FRANCE.

btw, your question in the first post " would there be any notes on how he died etc???"
sorry but i very much doubt whether you will find anything mentioning the circumstances
-
Hi Harribobs, I didn't think so, I just want to make sure I look up every thing I can on Andrew and his brothers.
Never been to Kew before, so don't want to miss whichever infomation I can get on them.
I am looking for the death of Cecil Henry Petts now.
Died in Helles, in 1915.
I have just told my dad all the infomation, he is a bit shocked and sad that they all died.
Regards

Thank you Harribobs,
My family didn't have much luck did they ??? He was only 19.
What site did you get it from, I have not seen them like that before, I look on cwgc.
Pettsy
-
no, not much luck at all!
it's not from a site, it's from 'soldiers died (in the ) great war' originally a set of books but now produced as a cd ( usually refered to SDGW)
glad this has been of help

Thank you Chris,
It was great to read, and at last know what happened to my g grandfather and his brothers, though I don't think John is one, so at least it seems he survived.

Hi all ;)
I had a great day there, so much to do.
I copied all the medal cards for the Munn brothers, and also for my dad's grandfather and his brothers.
I looked through the burnt records, but found nothing :(
My sister in law who was asking about the Chelsea pensioner yesterday, found his records.
It even describes him height, eye's hair etc.... Amazing.
Have to go back to do lots more, time went so fast and we was still trying to find our feet.
They do a great Hot Chocolate too ;)

I am just filling out my overseas Death Certificate forms for Daniel, James and Walter.
I don't think that Daniel is my one.
As it says he was born in Old Kirkpatrick, Lanarkshire, and my Daniel was born in Old Kilpatrick, Duntocher.
Were there any deaths for Daniel Munn from Old Kilpatrick, Duntocher?
Thank you.

I have just had some infomation from Dumbarton History Library.
And they told me that my gg grandfather did loose four of his five sons in the great war :'( how sad :'(
Also he has given me an address to write to, as there would have been a local paper with their deaths in.
And there was a mistake on the cd regarding Andrew Munn, as Clydebank is Dumbarton not Lanarks.
My dad is bringing over the report on Sunday.
Pettsy

it is sad,
but you've found them..they're not lost

everybody likes the hot chocolate at kew,and it looks like pettsy,s got the ww1 bug ;D mack

I think I have found John Munn at last.
And it seems he also died.
John Munn
Lance/Corp S/29861
Cameron Highlanders 7th Bn
Died 20/8/1917
32 years old.
Tyne Cot Memorial.
Can anyone please check where he enlisted?
I got the death info from Scotlands People site.
I found all the four brothers and was looking for John's marriage.
Then I looked for his death, it was only one in his name, with the same year of birth. I searched from 1900 - 1955.
I cannot believe all five brothers were killed.
It's such a shock.
Pettsy :'(

pettsy

Harribobs,
HELP can you re post the Memorial Scroll for me I have completely lost it, must have deleted it by mistake, sorry Patrish.
-
Thank you Chris
On his birth cert he was born in Kilmaronock (Dunbarton) near Drymen,
family lived in near Glasgow.
When you have a moment could you please post the memorial for me.
Thank you
Pettsy
-
no problem

Thank you Chris
I remember we looked at this one before.
What put me off was it states John was born in Kilmarnock and not KilmarOnock where he was born (it is not on the map anymore, near Drymen/Bonhill area above Glasgow, not below as Kilmarnock.
Thank you
Pettsy
