Pre 1855 there are gaps as not all parish registers were created equal .... the quality depended largely upon the person keeping the records. In addition not all records made it through the years.

This may be them in the 1851 index living in New Monkland
William Marshall age 32 born Perth
Helen Marshall age 30 born Airdrie
William Marshall age 10 born Airdrie
Elisabeth Marshall age 7 born Airdrie

Dwalin,

Re the son born 1850 - he may well not be recorded (might not have been baptized; might have been baptized in a church the records of which have not been indexed, etc).  Statutory Registration did not begin until 1855 in Scotland.

When I did a free search on ScotlandsPeople, it came up with two records for the death of a Helen MARSHALL other name CRAIG between 1855 and 1861.

Also, have you considered that whoever was the informant of her death might not have known her maiden surname so she might not be indexed under that name as well as her maiden name i.e. she might be indexed only under MARSHALL.

And also, that perhaps she might have been recorded as Ellen or Nellie.

I had a similar problem trying to locate a Catherine.... eventually found her marriage cert her name on it was Kate as was her death cert...so as your relative was a Helen try searching Ellen/Nell/Nellie happy hunting
