I really need some help. I have been searching the 1901 census and 1891 census to try to find the above mentioned. I cannot find him anywhere! There are a few by the same first and last name on the 1901 census but with a different middle name. I have his service records from ww1 and it says that he was born 1887 and he was 18 when he joined yet he told my uncle before he died that he joined at 14 illegally. His service records say that he was born in Ystrad and his next of kin is given only as Thomas. It also says his reason for joining was that he had no home. I have spent hours trying to find him with no luck whatsoever and i would appreciate any help anybody can offer. ???

Hi Have you tried the BMD index on Ancestry yet?
Let me know will try with you ...but I do not have a lot of time until later. Would that be Ystrad, Rhondda? If so, the reg district would be Pontypridd.

This looks a possible for parents marriage - Ystradyfodwg Marriages.
THOMAS PHILLIPS, age 24, Bachelor, father JOHN Phillips, married MARGARET ANN THOMAS, age 22, Spinster, father's name Evan Thomas on 8/6/1884 in YSTRADYFODWG parish

Thanks again. Been trying the 1901 census but he is still not showing up. I tried that intelligent person search and the closest person it found was a Johanna Phillips!!!At least i can try and trace his parents for the moment. Thank you!

Treorchy Cemetery
Burial No,Surname,Name,Year
12392,Phillips,Margaret Ann,1896
Think this maybe John's mother, on freebmd she is 36 but there are errors in death ages. I would get this internment record from Treorchy library, google for email addie, if not local.
Check the bottom of the record for other burial no's if it is her. There is also a child death, same namesake as her same year date (freebmd) if my hunch is right she could have possibly died in childbirth.
Not sure what happened to Thomas but he must have been alive when John gave him as next of kin.
Hope this helped you out

Now that could explain a lot as he may of had to join the army if his mother died. I found a gwen philips living at something called the huts in the ystrad area. I dont know what the huts were but there were a few families and a housekeeper there.
-
Internet connection went. !!! There was a Gwen phillips and some other families living at the same place so maybe the family split up if the mother died. Thanks again, you have been a huge help!! ;D

I am researching a Phillips family who lived in Ystradyfodwg from 1871 on.
1871
John Phillips 57 b. Merthyr coal miner died 1890
Elizabeth Phillips (Francis) mother 52 b Cowbridge died 1898
David Phillips son 9 b. Aberdare
Philip Phillips son 12 b Aberdare died 1929
Margt Phillips daughter 18 b Rhymney
Thos Phillips son 15 b Aberdare
Ystradyfodwg
Road - Tonypandy
Hamlet Clydach
I have traced Philip and his family - he had a daughter named Gwen but haven't had much luck finding Thomas after this 1871 census. There are a couple of possible Thomas's just not sure which is the right one.

Hello,
If the family were living at 12a the huts then i am not sure which father Gwen belonged to. My John Daniel Phillips seems to have born 1888. I am not sure about the other names on your post as so far i have only Thomas Phillips whos Father appears to be Evan Phillips. Ring any bells with you??If you look at the names that Cas has given me then maybe some of them could be related to yours.

I jumped in at the end of all these emails so haven't sorted everyone out but as I read it you have a John Daniel Phillips born 1888 - father Thomas and a marriage record 1884 for
a Thomas Phillips - father John not
Evan - who married Margaret Ann Thomas and her father was Evan Thomas.
Not sure where your Gwen comes in, though.

Hi Vivien,
The 1891 census posted above has Thomas born c1860 Aberdare. The marriage I found (also above) father's name was 'John'... Thomas also has a daughter 'Gwen' on the 1891..if you need details to be posted for this census let me know...

Thanks Cas
The birthdates aren't quite the same so can't say for sure this is the right Thomas without some further poking around but it's a strong possibility. I have noticed that quite often the birthdates vary from census to census. Everything else seems to match though.
Your help is much appreciated.

Thats right. typed a bit quick the other day without checking details. Are any of these related to you? I believe there may of been a Gwen Smith(after marriage nee Phillips) but i am not entirely sure. I know that my Grandmothers birth mother was Amelia Smith and some relative of Johns born 1888. Would you have any more info on any of these? The only records i have are from John's service records that i have at home and from medals that i have that i was left.

I am losing it!!!I didn't even read page 2 this time!! What birth date do you have for your Thomas Phillips? I can ask my very old Aunt that knew these people but she only remembers things after i spend ages looking so its not definite she would know anything but worth a shot.

Hi Karren
My Thomas Phillips was born 1856 in Aberdare but after taking a look at the 1881 census I don't think he is the Thomas Phillips you are looking for.
I found a Thomas Phillips born 1860 in Aberdare living with a father John Phillips in Ystradyfodwg on the 1881 census. I have the 1881 census for my John Phillips and it's not the same John Phillips.
So back to square one with my Thomas Phillips.
Good luck with your search
