Title: Gwen Phillips married???COMPLETED
Post by: Chasing-fireflies on Monday 27 February 06 10:32 GMT (UK)
I really need some help. I am looking for a marriage between Gwen Phillips b. ystradyfodwg father Thomas Phillips and an Evan or an ivan (was pronounced ee-van) smith that may of come from cornwall/somerset. Gwen was born in 1884 so i take she married just after 1900 as my grandmother was her daughters child and my gran was born in 1922. I have searched freebmd with no joy whatsoever and i tried various other sites that led me round in circles. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi both

I have been trying the census end of the investigation!

No Gwen PHILLIPS with matching father in 1901, at least with the right birth date and similar place.

No Evan SMITH in Wales from Cornwall or Somerset either.

Do you have further info on parents and siblings, please?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi,
Since found the two males that go with the marriage registration I gave you, they are

Eublias Thomas Bendall and
Frederick John Meek.

I think perhaps you need some birth and marriage certificates that will get you back to this point.

Hi to all who replied. Had a few computer problems so have not been able to get onto site to reply and say thanks for trying. My Grandmother was born in 1923 not 1922 as i first thought. Her name was meier Rowena Smith at birth but she was later adopted by her uncle as Phillips. Her mother was Amelia Jane Smith and her parents are the ones i am looking for as a little family mystery surrounds my gran's father as we have been told it was a hotel owner that Amelia worked for in London where my Gran was born. My gran's adopted father was Gwen's brother and she was found living with her father and Brother John in 1891 in Ystraddyfodwg. My uncle remembers her and her husband but he remembers that the name was spelt unusually like Even or Iven or something similar and that he was somerset/cornwall area. I am trying to find them so that i can estimate when Amelia was born as my Gran only met her a few times and did not know how old she was. I have tried looking for her birth without any joy so i dont know where to order a certificate from.
Thanks to all again!!!! ;)

I am having real trouble following this - can we stick to names, rather than "her" or "his", LOL??  ;D

I think this is what we have

Grandmother Meier Rowena SMITH b London? 1923 - later PHILLIPS

Gt Grandmother Amelia SMITH

2x gt grandmother Gwen SMITH nee PHILLIPS, b Ystradyfodwg c1884, father Thomas

2x gt grandfather Evan/ Ivan SMITH from Somerset/ Cornwall

You are trying to find the 2x gt grandparents.

Is John Gwen's brother?  Can you post the 1891 census please?

Hoping to help,

Arranroots  ;)

In 1901 I can find a family in Ystrad which has some matches with yours.

RG13/5014/51/42

Evan SMITH H M 42 - collier haulier below ground - Glamorgan Aberdare
Amelia Elizabeth W M 35 - Somerset Yeovil
Evan son 17 - collier haulier below ground - Ystradyfodwg
Lizzie dau 12 - do
Lily dau 11 - do
George son 7 - do
Thomas son 6 - do
Charles son 2 - do
Alfred son 11 months - do

Address: 22 Pleasant St, Ystradyfodwg

Note that the son Evan is  about the same age as you have for Gwen.  The choice of name Amelia for their daughter could be in honour of his mother.  what do you think?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

This is the 1891 detail that was found for me by stallc
1891 ystradyfodwg 2 llanfecca?? Rose cottages
Thomas Phillips head m 31 collier b. aberdare
Margaret A wife 27 b. Pontypridd
Gwen Dau. 7 b.pentre ystrad
Margaret Dau. 5 b. pentre ystrad
John D son 3 b. pentre ystrad
Maggie Dau. 8mths b. pentre ystrad

So here is Gwen and John but after this date i cannot find her. I have john later marrying Emily letitia Griffiths. Amelia seems to disappear on record too as i cannot find a birth record so i dont know how to apply for one without the area which is probably pontypridd but you never know.
That family could well be them i shall get in touch with my uncle later and see if he remembers any small detail which the details you found could remind him of. I would say its them though as Amelia is an unusual name at that time in that area.
Thanks a lot!!! I shall let you know if its them or not! ;D ;D

I am very confused, thats right for my grandmother except one thing, Meier was born in April and was adopted in 1923. I have to apply for the birth certificate now to solve this mystery!!! Amelia was 16 in 1922 so i think its the last one.
The details for Evan are right!!!!!
Thanks everyone!!!!! ;D ;D ;D Its really appreciated!!!!

Let us know what the certs say when you get them, please?

Can I be cheeky and ask where the name Meier came from?  Is it a version of Mair?

Ok i will let you be cheeky this once and tell you the story Amelia told my Gran ;D. Apparently Amelia worked at a big hotel in london and she got pregnant by the owners son who was Italian and Meier was her way of spelling Mia as Amelia was not the brightest spark in the box!! I have tried to find which hotel Amelia worked at to try and find my Gran's father with no joy at all. I am wondering if Amelia lied about my Gran's birthday to make the adoption go through easier or to con her Uncle John into adopting her as Amelia simply left my Gran with them one day and didnt come back till years later. The salvation Army dealt with the adoption but i am having problems tracking down the department i need to speak to as they keep giving me wrong phone numbers. I have her adoption certificate somewhere in my house in wales but my uncle cant locate it and nobody ever saw a birth certificate not even her adoptive parents but she celebrated her birthday on April 5 so i think Amelia lied!!! I have to find out now!! ;)
