Hi,
My grandfather is outside and ggrandfather is probably the man in the shop, our only existing photo of him unfortunately. If anyone can enhance his features that would be terrific. Also I have seen some great colouring jobs on here can anyone do the same with this photo, taken Cir. 1914?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
We could get more detail out of your photo if you do not scan it in "Greyscale" - it might be Black/ White - but detail is lost in greyscale. ;)
Cheers

Hi Keith,
I tried B&W and you are right, it sharpens the details but ggranddad's face goes into silhouette, perhaps my scanner is not good enough?
Dave :(
-
Hi Dave,
From the quality of the greyscale image - your scanner is fine - just use the "colour" mode for scanning - high resolution and we might get something of your ggrandfather ;)
Cheers

Right this is in colour, might be too high res and I've had to cut the size right down, lets see

I didn't like that very much, this is in greyscale and I've adjusted the contrast and sharpness

Hi Dave,
I know you don't believe me but.... ;D
This is getting better - now a higher resolution scan

Hi Dave,
See - it is possible ;D ;D
Right - if only I knew what to do now - just a quick levels adjustment - will have a look later.

Not pushing or anything but is there more to come?

kmo, you've done a great job on that colouring-in, I know it's not easy when you've got lots of little bits to do, and I don't think I would have had the patience to tackle it! Well done!
Dave, here is my attempt at bringing out your (possible) g-grandad. Not sure if it's any better than Keith's... :-\
Prue
P.S. He looks a bit young to be the father of the bloke in the foreground...could be a trick of the light (dark) though.
-
Thanks Prue,
yes he does look a bit young. Perhaps we still don't have a picture of ggranddad!!
How I wish I had asked more questions or paid more attention when I was a youngster. I was about 16 when Gran died and not a bit interested in the BMD certs and photo's that she had in the house. Most of them were thrown out, I remember thinking that the stamps were of more interest than the certificates!!!.
I now have captions and names on all my family history photos and they are regularly updated and saved to disc.
Best regards, thanks again

It wasn't to bad to do. Lots of straight lines made selections a little easier. The shopfront, windows, roof and pavement were just a series of boxes. No skin tones to faff round with. No potted plants or trees to colour. The horse had to stay white because there was no detail left along his back.

Hi Dave,
I have had a play with the close up - but I can't get anything more out of it - sorry - here's my latest try:

Hi all,
I'm closing this topic now and wish to thank all of you for your inputs.
Best of luck with your own projects
