It's a really nice photo! :)

Unfortunately (and frustratingly!),the shoulder badge is unreadable and I can't make out what's on the buttons, and I can't find a match for the cap badge either!! so not much help really! ;D ::)

I'll watch with interest and hope that someone can identify his regiment.

Mick ;)

got me beat as well mick. I can not find the badge either, the buttons are general service so will not tell us anything and as for the metal shoulder titles (looks like one top-one bottom) like you I can not make them out.

Been through some of my Ref books, including one for Scots Regiments.
I cannot find anything remotely similar to this one.

I have not got time to go through my other books now, have to go out for the evening. If no one else can work it out I will have another go tomorrow.

We had this problem but with luck we found his wife on 1901 Census as Soldiers Wife In Ely, and he was on the 1901 Census for Alderney in the Suffolk Regiment.
As l say just sheer luck but it helped that we knew his name and the fact that it was dueing a Census period.
Wish you the best of luck with your researching.

Hi all,

Are you sitting comfortabely?

I have another thread going as to whether Dudley G Clifton was Rifle Brigade or KRRC.....Well, he had a brother who survived the first war. His name was Reginald P. Clifton.....I am trying to dig out a photo of the two of them together which interestingly shows Reg in a kilt.
I would love to find out a little more about Reg.

i deliberately left this thread alone hoping someone would positively id the badge but...

looking at his youth and that the uniform material doesn't look like standard army kit, i suspect it isn't a regimental badge but a school badge

Wow harribobs, what a wonderful theory, I had never thought that the schoolboys would have uniforms distinctive to each school, but of course  :D they would have.

How would you start to research such a thing ???

Hi Harribobs,

I believe that the brothers went to Tonbridge School so that looks as if it is their uniform.....I think that we will put this on hold until I find the elusive Photograph.

It certainly fits, scroll work, shield, wing like leaf wreath at side and even a twiddly bit on top, well done to Harribobs (I can see you taking your bows even as I type  ;D)

Hi again Joe,
I have just been through the "Tonbridge School and the Great War of 1914-1918" record of the services of Tonbridgians book.
The coat of arms shown in the book is attached.
Now we have something interesting popped up as in their roll there is Rifleman D.G. Clifton but no record of any other Clifton that was in the school and served in WW1.

Joe,
It records that Dudley George left the school in 1915, one wonders if it a picture of a slightly younger Dudley?????

Joe,
Some more on Dudley George from the Tonbridge School Book.
Rifleman
Dudley George Clifton 3rd Battn. Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consorts Own)
Killed in action March 21st 1918, Aged 19.
At the School 1914-15 (School House)
Rifleman D.G. Clifton was the son of Mr and Mrs Percy Clifton, of The Bower, Hever, Kent. Entering the School in September 1914, from Tudor Hall, Hawkhurst, he left, whilst still young, in July, 1915, to commence a business career in the city. He was with Messrs. Lewis and Peat, of 6, Mincing Lane, until he was old enough to serve, and was doing well in his work. On February 20th, 1917, he enlisted and served with a Regular Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He had been recommended for a commission, but, having to serve overseas first in order to qualify for it, went to France on January 4th, 1918, and was killed in action on March 21st, 1918, the first day of the great German Offensive in the "First Battle of The Somme, 1918" just when he was expecting to be sent home to join an Officer Cadet School.

Does not quite tie in with what his records say but I have come across this before with school reports on their ex students.

Joe,
This gets better and better, in the Tonbridge Book there is an image of Dudley, a little yellowed, old old book but better than the reprints.

Hi Annie,
Sitting in my little study when I saw this, all the reference material to hand so easy to look up and check. Great little bit extra on our man but only one Clifton in the Tonbridge book which made me wonder if it was a younger Dudley.
Going to have to go and recharge those bunny batteries, 2.15a.m. here.

On the National archives MIC there are three Reginald Cliftons

R.A.M.C.         #2933
and Manchester Regiment # 2962 then # 252638

Somerset Light Infantry #25601 and Highland Light Infantry # 77932

Royal Fusiliers # GS/7636 then # GS/58952

Given that the picture of the 2 brothers together has one of them wearing a kilt it would seem possible that we are looking at the second Reginald Clifton who served in the S.L.I. and then the Highland Light Infantry. Lets see what the picture looks like.
