Title: Access Ancestry census index for free
Post by: Eking on Monday 11 October 04 12:06 BST (UK)
I have mentioned this before but its worth another mention as its improved even more - you can now see details of who was in household ( 1871 and 1901) and also partial RG reference details.

If you have not got access to ancestry you can still access the census index and get quite a bit of  info.

You must be registered and sign on to ancestry first.

Do your search. When it presents you with a list - found N number of people in 1871 census, for example, there will be a padlock next to it indicating you cannot access it without paying.

Click on it anyway and it should present you with a list showing name, age, county of birth, county of residence.

Which is better than nothing. You could then redo the search and put in place of birth or place or residence and see if it matches what you were expecting.

If you click on the person, you should then get an option to see others in household(1871 and 1901).

try this link to register

http://www.ancestry.*com/subscribe/subscribefree1.asp

It should register you as guest member

I've just realised that if you click on view others in household (1871) it gives you the parish of residence too.

Thanks for the info, but they seem to have got wise. I can't get anything more than the 1881 census.

Yes you are right - I think they got wise a few weeks ago.

It's not bothering me at the moment as have been able to make use of the free links to ancestry.

What free links?  I thought they'd shut them all down.
