Hi Jean,
Have you seen the actual census image you are referring to?
The handwriting looks very artistic but is a nightmare to read.
Nobody seems to be born Sydenham however.
Sending you a PM.

any chance it could be camberley, surrey
a search of genuki did not reveal armeley

Hi Jean.
Probabley Anerley, which is a "suburb" ;)of Penge, which in itself is an adjacent parish to Sydenham.
Regards,
Dave.

thanks for the help. if Anerley is a suburb of penge, would that mean that streatham was part of surrey back then aswell.

Hope Dave can answer your question. :P
I see a birth registered in Croydon
Daisy Cooper
June quarter 1893
Volume 2a page 275
Checking genuki for the Croydon registration district, I see it covers Penge :D
Croydon
Created 1st July 1837.
Sub-districts : Croydon; Mitcham
GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 2a (1852-1930).
Addington, Beddington, Coulsdon, Croydon, Merton, Mitcham, Morden, Penge, Sanderstead, Wallington, Woodmansterne.
Edit: However I now see the 1901 has another Daisy Cooper, age 7, born Croydon :-\

Indeed,Streatham was, like Penge and Anerley, part of the ancient county of Surrey.
Sydenham, however, was in the ancient county of Kent.

thanks for that dave.
