Title: Stafford Registrar
Post by: bondgirl on Wednesday 12 April 06 11:19 BST (UK)
Hi, I wonder if someone can help me. I have a relative Samuel Jenkinson born around 1788 St Marys? Stafford.

There is no record of him apart from a marriage at St Marys in 1808 to Ellen Stanton. I am assuming his birth is around the same age of his bride.ie 1788 and have nothing else to go on...I tried the look up exchange but they cant find anything either...

I am desparatly trying to confirm his parents.. I have a most likely match as Thomas and Mary*(considering they have children named after both their parents and a Sam is Marys dad..so my sam..is the grandchild of a sam..(which is usually how they did things in those days isnt it))

The Staffs record offices have told me the registrar on Eastgate has copies of the marriage.. I have emailed the registrar but have had no reply as yet... Does anyone know how i can view this certificate or at least get details from it to confirm parentage? Is there anyone here who is able to visit the registrar to view it..or do you have to make appointments etc?? Please help if you can :(  :)...This is an important person, everything i have done beyond this entry cannot be confirmed otherwise...

Thank you for your help

Dont know if you have this, was trying to find Samuel's birth year from census return.

1851 as follows:

HO107/1999 Folio 291 Page 31
Snowhill, Stafford St Mary

Ellen Jenkinson Head 63 Widow Charwoman born Stafford
George Jenkinson Son 20 Unmarried Corwainer born Stafford
Charles Jenkinson Grandson 6 born Stafford

Sandra

A marriage certificate for 1808 will not have the parents names on it.  Your best bet is applying for the death certificate as it will state the age at death enabling you to narrow down his birth year.

Samuel Jenkinson
March quarter of 1848
District: Stafford
Volume: 17
Page: 126

Hi Sandra yes thank you I have that.

I have contacted the records offices who now say even the IGI marriage entry..the only record i can find on him does not hold his date of birth or a fathers name!!..so short of actually visiting the parish (something that is not an option at the moment, i live 2 miles from the beach on the south coast) and wading through the actual registers it is looking like a lost cause.  :'(

Personally I would apply for the certificate from the ONS site.  All certificates of death have age at time of death on them.  All the records office will be able to tell you is the name of the church that performed the ceremony.

Regards

Sandra :)

I dont live far from the records office, I will try and pop in over the weekend.

ps, from what i can tell, Samuel and Ellen had 9 children.

I may have to pay a genealogy person in Staffs to investigate it for me. I saw a company who does this advertised somewhere, will have to find the link again. Never Mind..thanks for trying Sandra, Much appreciated :)

Sam and Ellen had 8 children that I know of...

Sarah, Caroline, Henry, Maria, Harriet, Sam, George and Thomas

Is there one more??.. :D

Thank you very much for trying, if you get a chance over the weekend...it really means a lot to me to get a date of birth or a fathers name

What is the ONS site? I will probabaly have heard of it once you say it.. ::)

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp

There seems to be a William but on another inspection it may be a typing error as it says 1782, son of Samuel and Ellen. St Mary's Stafford

just rereading my email from the records office who say..

"that the entry says....that "both individuals are of this parish"..ie st marys..so you should find the details listed in the parish registers."

I contacted the staffs St Marys look up exchange too in the past a chap called Paul Le Roy who said he couldnt find anything???

If you need any more info to help you please let me know, I have everything else around him in place..with a very good and educated guess at his parents :)
Thanks Sandra

Maybe Samuel wasn't christened ???

Do you have them on 1841?  If not, I would request a look up to see if Samuel was born in County.

I cant believe I missed that..it was posted by a lovely lady who helped me in the past with something else...I have just read my posts looking because i knew i had the 51 on him somewhere in passing and saw she had posted the 41 too!!

So do you think the records offices of St Marys might show an entry for his father??if he was baptised?? Theres nothing on the IGI for him but his wedding details say of this parish ???

Thank you Sandra that is very kind of you. If you find anything on Sams parentage too that would be an absolute gift...because this has been troubling me for a long time and it means I cant confirm anything south of him on my tree without his dad as Thomas b 1760 and mum as Mary Wilkes/?Wilkinson...

I look forward to hearing from you, thank you sooo much for trying for me!! :-* :-* :-* :)

Registration in England did not start until 1837] and all the children are born before that, so the Register Office can only help with death certificates by the look of it.
So no Register Office will hold anything earlier than that - they may have passed your enquiry on the marriage onto the County Records Office for you.

The English Register Offices will be shut on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and of course be frantically busy with Easter Weddings, and then next week with registration they need to do of deaths  and births from the previous Thursday onwards.

Think your best bet is the Records Office when they re-open next week, or the local history society for the area.

Hi Bond Girl

Apologies but I never had chance to get to the Records Office today due to forces beyond my control that came in the form of kids ::)

I will keep you in mind.

You can contact the records office directly, they really are EXTREMELY helpful.

Their telephone number is 01785 278379

Many thanks

Sandra ;)
