Hi
I have my gr gr grandparents on the 1881 census living in Coach Road Bedlington. They are:
John Tanney age 56 born Ireland
Elizabeth Tanney age 51 born Ireland
Alll their children are born in Cowpen
Mary Tanney age 17
Patrick Tanney age 15
John Tanney age 11
Henry Tanney age 5
I'm trying to find out where they came from in Ireland and wondered if on previous census they had happened to mention their actual birthplace. Could someone have a look for me please?
Thanks
Tessy

Hello Tessy
In 1871 they are at Cowpen, John aged 46, labourer, born Ireland, but the wife is Margaret aged 35 born Ireland.
The children are Mary 7
Patrick 5
Bridget 3
John 1
John and Bridget are born in Northumberland, Patrick & Mary born in Ireland.
It looks as if it is the right family, but the name of the wife is wrong, or she has died and he has remarried by 1881.

Hi Emjay
Thanks for all that. It seems his first wife must have died - so I'd better go looking for a death certificate. And if the two eldest children were born in Ireland they must have been a relatively recent arrival unless they're making it all up! Do you have access to the 1861 just to check they're definately not there?

Hi Tessy,
No sign of them in 1861.
Margaret Tanney died aged 36 December quarter 1871, Tynemouth vol 10b p. 179
John Tanney marriage September quarter 1873 Tynemouth vol. 10b p. 420.
The only Elizabeth on the same page is Elizabeth Donneghan.

Thanks for finding all that out for me Emjay, I now have an approximate date of their arrival in this country. I'll see what I can find on the Irish geneaology websites and also on the Tyrone board here on RootsChat as Audrey tells me there is a concentration of Tanneys there.
Thanks again
Sue
