Title: craig, cregg, owens - roscommon
Post by: sharon123 on Saturday 29 April 06 15:31 BST (UK)
can anyone help me find a marriage between darby craig and margaret owens in 1871 they were living at 94 ballinameen, roscommon, their surname seems to change from craig to cregg for some reason all through my research this has happened which makes things really difficult.
they apparently had three children
james cregg born 15 oct 1867
jane cregg born 5 mar 1869
mary craig born 27 apr 1871
i also think that they had another son also called darby however i have no records to prove this.
any help would be great

Yes I think so however I have found nothing that solidly appertains to Darby Craig the only thing I have on him was that he was a cooper.

This looks to be Margaret a widow in 1901 at Finisclin
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Estersnow/Finisclin/1673534/

27th Oct 1884 at above address Ellen of Darby Cregg and Margaret Oats (obvious mistake for Owens )

1st Oct 1882 at above address Anne of Darby Cregg and Margaret Owens

both births registered in Boyle fathers occupation Farmer

so between 1884 and 1901 Darby appears to have died
but a Derby Craig died in Loughbally in 1906 age 57 informant son John Cregg present at death Loughbally  i cant find this man in 1901 on census maybe someone else will to eliminate him ?

Margaret 1911 was married 45yrs so circa 1866
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Eastersnow/Finisclin/777829/

Margaret died 1st April 1927 widow of a Farmer age 86 at above address informant was a
Bally ? Keaveny ? a cousin

My Great great grandfather Darby Craig married Mary Cassidy in 1870 in Bradford, his father was also listed as Darby Craig with occupation a Cooper but in 1870 was deceased. I have tried for years to find out anything about both of them, I have a feeling that my gt gt grandfather left England without mt gt.gt. grandmother as there is no death record for him. I think he was born in about 1846 ish but don't think it was Boyle. It is a right mystery.

I think you might be right with the Derby Craig who died in 1906 because the age is about right. It could mean he had another family in Ireland as well as the one in England, which could explain why he isnt on the 1901 census.
