My grandparents were James Orr and Margaret Foye. They married in Lurgan on 23 July 1919 and one of the witnesses was GEORGE ORR. Does anyone know anything about him? My mother cannot recall an uncle George but he must be related in some way.
-
Hi there, I am interested in your message about James Orr and Margaret Foye, My Maternal Grandmother was Sarah Eileen Orr and she Married a Man called Andrew Liggett.
My Mother used to talk about a cousin of hers named George Orr. Before my Mother died she also talked about an Uncle called James I wonder if this was the same George and James Orr.
-
Hi Mammabear
We do not recognise Sarah Eileen Orr or Andrew Liggett. We have been trying for some time to trace my mother's ancestors and feel that Orr is the Irish equivalent of Smith!! There seem to be several lines of Orr family in the area, but difficult to connect. James is also a popular name!
My grandfather James was born on 16/11/1883 in Lurgan and died 5/04/1963. His parents were James Orr and Elizabeth Cranston, married in Lurgan on 27/12/1879.
The only record we have found about George Orr is his signature as a witness at my grandparents' wedding.
Have you any other information about your George and James?

Hi Sunnyhill
Thanks for all the info. We had already studied the Ulster Covenant but had only looked at the Orr family, not the Foyes. The two James Orr from Charles Street are my grandfather and great-grandfather. It is possible that the Maggie Foye of 159 Union Street eventually married James and became my grandmother - will have to do some more research. We think Isabella, James and Robert are from one family, as my great-grandfather apparently married twice. There seem to be several distinct branches of the Orr family living in Lurgan. We have made contact with the Canadian relatives of David Orr but he seems to be descended from a different branch to my mother.
We have still not managed to identify George Orr, who witnessed my grandparent's wedding - we feel he may be one of the keys to idenifying the correct family line.
-
If being a shoemaker runs in the family, there was James Orr married to Elizabeth Black in Lurgan. They had children John abt Sept 1832, Isabelle abt 1835 (she married Joseph Adams in 1852) , James abt 1840 Robert abt 1842, Ellen abt 1851 and probably John in 1833.
James Orr who married Margaret Geddis was a weaver and his children were born mainly in the 1860's.
However, there was John Orr who married Mary Ingram. His townland looks a bit like Tegnavin which must be close to Lurgan. His children were George bapt January 1842 and Moses baptized 1831.
These are all from the Lurgan First Presbyterian records where the Foye marriage took place. It looks as if Orrs hadn't attended there in some time.
-
Our Orr family was James Orr married to Margaret Geddis. They had children; Thomas James, Dorothy, James, May, David Henry (born 1860 and died young) William, Elsie (may be Eliza Jane) Ann Margaret, and David Henry, my husbands great grandfather. These are the names that were given by David Henry's daughter Margaret. According to her, Elsie married a man named Halliday Russell and they had children Kathleen, Molly, Fred and Cecil. David Henry was COI and belonged to Shankill Parish church.
David and his family were living in Victoria St at the time of the signing of the Covenant. The Maggie Orr listed as signing was my husbands grandmother Margaret Orr.

Margaret J,
According to a parent search on the IGI youf grandfather had a sister you may already know about. Elizabeth Orr born 1 Mar 1881.

come now are you so young you have never heard of or been called "Sunny Jim"or even 'sonny jim' :-)
Colin

On the Fryer front..
My Emily born c 1 Dec 1854 had a brother Robert born 1831 Co. Antrim.
She may also have had a (possibly elder twin) brother Frederick born Camus Juxta Mourne which is where I thought she was born!
I think her parents were William & Lydia but until the other day I had nothing solid on them. Now I know there were a family with this name who originated in England, possibly Wellington, Shropshire who were Tax / Excise folk and went all ove ireland.
I also know mine were connected with an Emely or Emmeline who lived mst of her life in Edinburgh as a companion.
Any bells ringing?

Yes, bit slow on the uptake there :)
I don't have any bells ringing as yet but interesting to see a lot of Fryer and Orr info here so will look out for them.
Cheers

Many thanks for everyone's replies. We had put the Orr family to one side while concentrating on another topic (Jewell sisters - which has been very successful). Have noted all the interesting info and will get back to everyone as soon as we have looked at it properly.

Hello,
..yes, I know, long time no hear! Sorry about that lots going on!
I recently visited a small welsh border town and found my William and Lydia Fryers history by utter chance.
He joined the Excise in 1842 and NA are sending me a copy of his record.
It is understood that he was posted to NI early on and had two children - Emily and Frederick both Chr at Camus Junta Mourne (Strabane today) in 1851 and 1854.
I then realised that the brother who was aged 80 and visiting Emily on 1911 Census day could not be her brother though he cited Antrim as his place of Birth. So I have researched him through Scottish records and found that he was an Engineer living in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire married to a Margaret nee Bell. They were both born in Ireland and married in Ireland too.
They had a big Family including a young Emily who I have also research a bit more and found that she was my Grandma's Aunt Emmy who visited the South in her dotage, probably 1950-70. She lived in Morningside Edinburgh in house left to her by the Family who lived there who she had nursed for her lifetime. She had all the benefits - chauffeur and RR and was very grand to us young things who had to cal upon her in The Royal Worcester Hotel at Droitwich when she 'visited'.
The puzzle now is to find out where Robert came from. He could have been a brother of William but if he was born 1831 he cannot have been brother to my Gt Granny Emily who married J G Pentland in Lurgan in 1870.
Do you have any linking data, perchance?
When I have some more info from NA I will let you know. I have also asked form Emmys 1975 Death Record from Scotland which will confirm her parents were Robert and Margaret.... by the way the children in Lanark were ALL born there, none in Ireland!

Your Fryers all seem too recent for my Fryers.
Mine in Ireland were born 1831 Antrim and 1851 and 1854 Strabane / Camus. I believe they are related - probably cousins. Their fathers names were Samuel and William.
Any bells? William may show his place of birth as Wales c1826

Hi Colin, still haven't got any further back than Robert b abt 1861. That is a big age gap between your Robert and Emily?
-
Yes but he had a brother born the same year as her but not nearby!
I dont have family that I know of in NI after c 1880 so your 1910 is almost recent!
Try Aghalee in Antrim in your.searches! Try also any alt spelling for the surname even Fr----

Hi, I am interested in Orr Family from Lurgan Armagh, my husband's ggrandmother was Mary Jane Orr born in Lurgan c 1837 to james and Elizabeth Orr. She came out to South Australia in 1855 and married here. There is a letter in the S Aus archives form her mother Elizabeth written in 1859 asking for her to write home. I am just waiting on a copy of this letter being digitized and sent to me. It confirms her shipping arrival and that her Father's name is James Orr and he was a shemaker in Lurgan . Looks like the same family you are talking about. Hope you find this,
Karen
-
Typo...James was a Shoemaker not shemaker !
-
Hi Karen, I just got the wedding cert for my Elizabeth Fryer m Robert Orr 12 May 1939, Christ Church Church of Ireland, Lisburn. His address was 69 Byron St., Belfast, hers 9 Victory Street, Lisburn. He was a painter, his father George, labourer.
Witnesses William James Foye and Muriel Fryer, sister of Elizabeth. Muriel I had marrying Jim Foy - probably same person as William James Foye.
-
My grandparents were James Orr and Margaret Foye. They married in Lurgan on 23 July 1919 and one of the witnesses was GEORGE ORR. Does anyone know anything about him? My mother cannot recall an uncle George but he must be related in some way.
Hi, the birth record for my Robert Orr has his birth place as 67 Byron Street Belfast, though his father George [a labourer] was at 35 Byron Street. George's wife was Minnie Weekey
-
George Orr m Minnie Weekey 24 July 1915 in St. Silas C of I, Belfast. His father was Robert Orr, occupation of both Red Leader. George's address was 69 Byron Street, Belfast. Minnie's father was William James Weekey. Witnesses Thomas and Bella Andrews
In the 1911 census there is an 18yo George Orr with father Robert at 46.1 in Leopold Street (Shankill, Antrim)
There is a George Orr b 12 Aug 1892, address 16 Byron Place, Belfast, father Robert and mother Jane Birney
-
That was a quick reply! But it is the James and Elizabeth Orr from Lurgan that I think are Mary Jane's parents. The letter was written in 1859 when Mary Jane Orr would have been about 23/24. There was reference that maybe James snr married twice.....but which James was this.? I have the census for 1911 when there is a James Orr (Shoemaker) married to a Lizzie, and they have a son James age 27 and a dau Lizzie age 29. James is age 71 therefore born about 1840....if i have the correct family he would be a brother to Mary Jane...and the Elizabeth and James would be their parents. So two generations of james married to an Elizabeth...they dont make this Familytree researching easy for us do they.!
So is your Robert Orr, that you have the marriage lines for, a descendant from this family ???
Maybe we will have to do a DNA to find if we have a match ...lol.I think the younger generation would say.

Looks like mine originated from Co. Down

I have this family as James Orr and Elizabeth Black with children Isabelle b 9-23-1835, John b 9-27-1832, bapt Dec 11 year 1832 or 1833- not clear from lst listing- Robert b May 13, 1842, Ellen b Oct 10, 1851. Isabelle married Joseph Adams b 1834 father Wm in 1852 at Lurgan First Presby. James was a shoemaker. Isabelle's witness was James McCleary whose family I was interested in. Isabelle was underage at 16. It looks like at least 3 sets of bapt records were kept and some names are duplicated, though I suppose some were lost.
Of possible interest:
John Orr of Tegnavin who married Mary Ingram went to the same church and John had Moses bapt June 26, 1831. George Jan 7, 1835
Also at the same church was James Orr and Margaret Gaddis who had a child with no information given March 1863? He was a warper who lived on Mary W? in Lurgan. Other kids- Eliza Jane in 1866, Thomas 1858, David henry 1860. Apparently his father is Thomas and hers is Henry and the marriage was in Moira, registered in Lurgan in 1857. I did not see child Ann b 1867. No idea if this family is related either. James may be the warper who died 1894 @57.

James and Elizabeth Orr, dau Mary Jane went to South Australia in 1855.
The letter that was written by her parents mentions that she travelled with William Sheals and his wife Rose and sister in law Mary Blaney, from Lurgan, who I can find no trace of in South Australia, so no leads there. Do these names mean anything to those chasing ancestors from Lurgan
