Title: What's a wine porter?
Post by: Miss Jane on Sunday 07 May 06 08:24 BST (UK)
Hi,

Two of my ancestors are listed in various records in the early to mid-1800's as being wine porters. They are also described in many records as being servants. One also appears in the 1841 census as a cellarman.

Would wine porters have been servants who specialised in wine, or would they be independent merchants who traded in wine?  ???

Any suggestions welcome.

Jane.

Finally, the Company has an Honorary Wine Porter to preserve the tradition and profession of wine porterage, which was the delivery of wine throughout the City.

Hi Jorose,

Thanks for the link.  :D It sounds like they were delivers of wine then rather than servants who specialised in wine.

All the best,

Jane.
