hello Alan

I've just stumbled across a Mary Ann Neame on my wife's tree, born in Petham (close to Lower Hadres) in 1866.

Perhaps of some interest?

I think you will find this is a variation of NUTTING which is a common name in the Chislet area.  I have connections with this name in Dover and other areas.

That interesting to hear, I will look into this over the weekend and see what I can find. Many thanks for this Bill, you might have just given me another avenue to investigate :)

I take it you've found www.neamefamily.com - my Mary Ann from Petham  is listed and according to the research on there, I get seamlessly back to the 1400s  :) easily beating my previous earliest anywhere in my research  by a good 350 years! Interesting site.

I hadn't actually seen your site Old Blue but will take a look at it later to see if you can see any connections but as I said earlier the chances of me finding something are slim at best.

I have a Margaret Newton marrying a John Sankey - both near Canterbury in the late 1600's...

I have the same two people in my tree Mike, I don't know where they got married but they had 7 children.

Post by: Mike Baldock on Monday 13 October 08 14:38 BST (UK)
hmmm, I have 8 children for John but I don't think they were all Margaret's - I have her dob as c1663, and the youngest John Sankey child I have is Mary Sankey - born 1675, plus an undated Elizabeth?

But I'm also not sure that John had any earlier wife?

Margaret was supposedly the wife of the farmer where John worked, and he married her when the farmer died - which would seem to make Margaret the one with an earlier marriage!

Post by: Alan b on Monday 13 October 08 14:46 BST (UK)
I have Margaret Newton's birth as c1663 as well. Regarding the children, I have Matthew as the youngest born in 1704, while the Mary the eldest born in 1675. I have Elizabeth born in c1681.

That is very interesting to know about John and Margaret's marriage as I did not know this. Do you know where or even when they married as I am missing this.

I have John Sankey born in Ireland and possibly the son (or cousin) of Sir Hierom Sankey, M.P. of Cork.

I do know that he was a well to do farmer from Polderhurst Court near Canterbury.

Or you can email me ************   and I can send them over :-)

I have just discovered John Sankey in my family tree (a 6gfather) who married Grace Sutton. I have some information about his grandfather (John senior from Ireland) and his children, but I cannot yet establish which of his sons was the father of my John.

Can anyone help please?

Also looking for BEAK(E) in Kent.

Hi

I have Edward Sankey as the father of your John Sankey. I have Edward down as being born in 1695 in Milton, Kent.

I don't know much about John Sankey who was born in Ireland apart from his year of birth was about 1655. Do you have anything to add to this ?

Post by: daviwright on Friday 13 August 10 08:00 BST (UK)
Thanks Alan. Following this information I have now found other material to confirm that Edward was indeed the father of my John.

The only information that I have about John Senior is second or third hand and is as follows. He came over from Ireland to work on the Newtons' farm in Poldhurst Court near Harbledown in Kent. Why he should come all that way is a mystery. When his master died John married his widow Margaret. Apparently John left a will signed in 1733. He died on 4.11.1733 and probate was granted in 1740 (!) at the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury. I have not yet been able to check this will.

The hearsay in http://www.austenfamily.org/sankey.html is interesting. The reference to King John is found in http://www.localhistories.org/liverpool.html

Hi,
I noticed you have an interest in Jarmans at Chatham. i'd be intererested to know the exact connection. mine relates to Jarman dockyard workers from the 1630s to 1760s - see www.jarmanfamilyhistory.com.

regards,
Patrick Jarman

Hi

We might have a connection somewhere but looking around your site I just can not see it. I can not see any of my Jarman's mentioned on your site anywhere, these are the ones I have:

http://www.alan137.co.uk/family/names10.htm#jarman

Please note: I have Thomas listed as being born in 1805, this is incorrect as I now believe he was born in 1797 and that he died somewhere between 1851 and 1861.

Yes, I think that your Jarmans are a little later than mine. But worth keeping in mind as there may well be a connection  at some point. Patrick

Thanks for the website, never come across this one before. From looking on this site I don't believe we have a connection because if looks like all your Terry's come from Canterbury while mine are from Lower Hardres and I can't see a connection between them.

Hi Alan b,
A bit of a long shot bumping this thread after all this time, but saw that you were looking at the Newick and Meppem names in Kent.
My wife's GGG-granfather was Henry Newick born about 1815 (his death certificate (1892) just says England) and his parents were Henry Newick and Fanny Meppem. Henry married Susan (or Susannah) Styles (or Stynes) at East Farleigh, Kent in 1835 then emmigrated to New South Wales Australia in 1838.

Is there any connection that you can see?

Kind regards,
Mark

Hi Mark

I had forgotten all about this topic that I started but I am happy to say that we do have a connection as I have your Henry in my tree as my line goes via his brother William Newick.

You can see further back if you are interested here on my family tree:

Hi Alan b,
What a wonderful surprise to find your reply this morning. I really didn't hold much hope as it was quite a while since there was any activity on this thread.

Thanks for the link to your family tree.   I will go through it over the next few days so I can see where it all fits.   If you want to add any details of the "Australian" Newicks just let me know and I can pass what I have found out.

I started reseaching our family history about 20 years ago, on and off, but only recently have I been going into more detail to try and fill in all the missing bits.   This month I have been concentrating on Henry Newick and Susan Stynes and their children - there is a bit of ambiguity about how many children there were.

Tobyma123,

I havent come across those names in my searching and given the depth of Alan B's information I would think it likely that I too am not related, but if I see something I will let you know.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Alan B,

I have had a good look through the family tree information in your web-site and we found it amazing - all the way back to the Norman Conquest of 1066!   It must have been fascinating conducting the research.

I can't provide any more information on Henry Newick's life in Australia, apart from following his "path" through New South Wales by the birth locations of his children.   But he appears to be an early pioneer in farming in the area around Parkes, NSW.

That' about it.

Cheers,

Mark
