Hi There
Would someone be so kind as to look up DORMAN at 24 Moncrieff Rd Peckham in the 1861 & 1871 Census for me?
This is the address at which my Gt GM Margaret Jane Dorman was living when she married in 1876. Her parents were Jacob Gowland Dorman, Engineer or Engine worker, and Margaret Fenwick and I'm hoping for some clues as to where they came from.
Gt Grandma was born in Constantinople, which is romantic but of no use in tracking down the ancestors!
Thanks, Jane

Hi Jane,
here is a sad one - :'(
1871 Census Wanstead Essex
Orphan Asylum for children of desceased British Merchant Seamen
Jacob Dorman, 12, Inmate Orphan, Scholar, Constantinople Turkey
RG10/1635
Folio: 181
Page: 7
Regards
Darcy

I am struggling to find Margaret in 1871, do you have an age for her?
Nicky
-
Wow. Thanks for that Darcy. Margaret's marriage certificate states that her father was deceased by 1876 but that is sad.
Still she made up for the lack of family life by going on to have 14 children, my grandfather being # 13.

Margaret Jane Dorman b 2 Sept 1856, Constantinople, so she would've been ~ 15 in '71
-
Hi
Also found this for 1871, could be another sibling?
Thomas B Dorman, lodger, age 25, engine fitter born Constantinople British Subject.
RG10 5004
folio 12 page 17
Bishop Wearmouth, Durham
Nicky

Sorry cannot find Margaret in 1871, in later census there is also a Robert Dorman born c 1853 in Constantinople.
Nicky
-
Thanks Nicky.
Can you tell me which cencus and where Robert was then?
Jane
-
Hi
The first census that I can find Robert in is the 1891
1891 census
Robert Dorman, head, age 28, chemical labourer born Constantinople British Subject
Elizabeth, wife, age 27 born Hornsey Fortis Green
Elizabeth, dau, age 7 born Essex Custom House
William, son, age 5 born Wilts Devizes
Herbert, son, age 3 born Essex Stratford
RG12 1311
folio 34 page 61
Stratford, West Ham, Essex
and here he is the 1901
Robert Dorman, head, age 38, ?? labourer (first word not clear) born Constantinople
Elizabeth, wife, age 36 born Finchley
Elizabeth, dau, age 18, domestic servant born Essex Stratford
William, son, age 15, stable boy born Wilts Devizes
Herbert, son, age 13, errand boy born Essex Stratford
Sarah, dau, age 9 born Essex Stratford
Charles, son, age 5 born ?? Southgate
RG13 1236
folio 87 page 51
Friern Barnet, Middlesex
I will have a look and see whether I can find him earlier that 1891.

I finally found Margaret Dorman in 1871
The Steyning Union Workhouse, Shoreham
Margarett Ann Dorman Wid abt 1831 Bolton, Surrey, England Servant/Nurse New Shoreham Sussex
RG10; Piece: 1093; Folio: 85; Page: 1;
Her 7 month old daughter was with her sister in London at this time, so it looks like she was left destitute after her husband died c1870, and had to find a job. If it was live in she may not have been able to have the baby with her, or maybe she just thought the poorhouse was no place for an infant. The other kids were also in London or an orphan asylum. :'(

Hi Jadewing
I'm new to the site, so I haven't figured out how to private message you, so here will have to do.
My name is Matt, my mum (a Canadian Dorman) is currently caught up in the genealogy of our family. She is a descendant of Jacob Dorman and Margaret Anne Fenwick through their son Robert, which is how I stumbled across your posts asking about Jacob and Margaret.
Anyways, I know the post is rather old but I was hoping that you may have some more knowledge of the family by now. My mum has a lot of information as well, so I was hoping perhaps the two of you could get in contact and share the knowledge you both have? I'm sure it'd help answer questions both you and we have.
I can be reached at (*). I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks for your time.

Hi Matt
Welcome to RootsChat! Fantastic to make contact with another Dorman descendant :D ;D :D ;D and to find a Canadian connection. I'd love to compare notes with you and your Mum. I'll pm my contact details.

Hi Matt
Another of my Dorman contacts has seen your post and is keen to make contact with you too. Her father said he had relatives in Canada but but she has not yet made contact. You may be the big breakthrough. ;)
I have some information about Robert Dorman and his wife Elizabeth Adams. Which of their children is your ancestor? Did you know that we have a double connection as my Gt Grand parents were Margaret Jane Dorman, Robert's sister, and Alfred Adams, Elizabeth's brother. And brother Jacob Dorman married another sister, Sarah Adams. The gene pool suddenly gets very shallow!
I've sent you a personal message with my email address so you can contact me direct.
Cheers, Jane

Matt
I've just realised that you probably didn't get my PM as you need to have made 3 posts to RootsChat before I can contact you! You can just reply to this post, or any other thread on RootsChat.
Jacob and Sarah Dorman settled on Bowen Island in BC, are your folks in the same area? When did they go to Canada? One of my Dorman contacts is also one of Robert Dorman's descendants, through son Robert 'William' Dorman.

Too bad they never just took out the @ and added "At" so that you could still email the source...
I am not sure if you had this about Jacob on Bowen Island...http://www.bowenisland.org/wow/explore/stories.php
If not you'll appreciate that there is a photograpoh...
"Jacob Dorman, born in Constantinople, was the merry-go-round's proprietor and engineer. He is pictured here with the steam engine he built to propel the carousel."

if you are still looking for ancestors, this has Barbara Matilda Dorman who was born Eng. 1838 and married in Constantinople...so could be a sister to your Jacob sr.? J.J.
I see no proof of this birth on the BMD however...
There is this entry on the IGI and it is extracted...
Barbara Matilda Dorman -born August 21st, 1838 & Christened Sept. 16th 1838
Saint George In The East, Stepney, London, England
To parents Thomas & Margaret DORMAN

Thanks JJ - I'd not found this photo before. Pity its so small!
-
I knew the Dorman, Bowen B.C. sounded familiar ::) We had a great hunt a while back... ;D

I wonder if the site who scanned the photo would email you a copy of the original or if they'd charge you
for it...wouldn't hurt to check, I imagine... J.J.

Yes indeed, you were a goldmine of information back then too!
I think I tried this mob once before with little joy. But maybe I'll try again. I might just jag someone more helpful this time!

Hi to Jadewing.......I stumbled upon your query about Jacob and Sarah Dorman who moved to Canada and raised a family here. Jacob Dorman is my great grandfather.....my grandfather being George Dorman Sr. and my father being George Dorman Jr. Jacob and Sarah lived on Bowen Island which is located in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Bowen Island is near the city of Vancouver. They lived like pioneers in a small community. There is a book written about the early pioneers on Bowen Island. Have you heard of it?????

Hi there Canadian Dorman!
Welcome to RootsChat and its fantastic to hear from you. :D
My Gt Grandparents were Jacob Dorman's sister Margaret Jane Dorman and Sarah's brother Alfred Adams. I think that makes us double 3rd cousins. I have some information on your side of the family but I would love to compare notes and exchange more information with you if you are interested.
I visited Vancouver in 1997, before I started researching my family tree and I had no idea that I had relatives there!
Do you or your family have any information about Jacob's parents?
Cheers, Jane (Australian)
