can't remember which thread it was in now-which rootschatter said their rellie was a steward in charge of lifeboat 13?
-
Hi, and a special hello to Lynn,
A rellie of mine emigrated to the USA on the Carpathia in 1916, so I was interested to read that the ship was one of those that picked up survivors from the Titanic . Was Captain Rostron the captain in 1916, do you know?
Regards and New Year wishes to all at Rootschat

Kate Florence Phillips travelling as Mrs Kate Marshall was my Gx2 Grandfather's niece (my 2nd cousin 3 times removed) - her Grandparents were my Gx3 Grandparents.
Kate was eloping with her married boss who did not survive the sinking. 9 months after the sinking, Kate gave birth to a daughter Ellen Mary... more details here

Not the Titanic, but I did have one on the Lucitainia (not sure if I've spelt that correctly)
He was a steward. He was very ill with flu just before it was due to sail and his mother tried to get him to stay at home, but he said he couldn't afford to miss the tips.

mc8, it was me.
My wife's Great Great uncle is Sidney Daniels. He was a third class steward who survived the sinking by launching lifeboat No13 (although he had to give his place up for passengers).
A few links on him here:
http://www.southampton.gov.uk/s-leisure/artsheritage/history/titanic
Sidney died in 1983, and was the last surviving crewmember.
Alas, we never met - but I do have a voice recording of him recounting how he left the Titanic.
Here he is:

A family story goes that an acestor had a ticket to sail on Titanic but never actually sailed.
He was persuaded to go back home and marry his girlfriend (who was at the time pregnant!!)
I realize this could just be a "family story" but does anyone know how I could find out if it's true? Is there a list of those who bought tickets rather than those who sailed?
Thanks
-
I didn't have any rellies on either ship, but my husband's grandfather booked people on to it. One of his occupations was agent for Cunard. At the same time he owned a pub, was a magistrate, ran a shop and had 9 0r 10 children. He was also the last man to leave Granard when it was set on fire.

There was a Walter Binstead ,Trimmer/Fireman,not known if he was one of 'mine' yet,but as I followed the same 'trade' for a time,it would not now suprise me!
How anyone managed to get up from the bowel's of such a behemoth of a ship beggar's my imagination! He must have been off

My Great Grandmother was ment to go on the Titanic but at the last minute didn't. Appearently someone on my Fathers side died on the Titanic but i haven't found out who it is yet. A relative on my Brother-in-law's side of the family was one of the lookouts who was off duty when it struck the iceburg.

Family gossip has it that Titanic 2nd mate Lightowlers is related to the Lightowler side of my family. He survived gave evidence and went on to take his yacht 'Sundowner' over to Dunkirk to rescue soldiers from the beaches, that was in his retirement.
I would love to find the link.

Sundowner'
:D

Sorry Graceland, I meant the link between Lightowlers (of Titanic and Dunkirk fame) and my Lightower rellies. But that's terrific, thanks

Hi again.
My apologies in advance, but I just have to share this with someone before I burst!!
As posted, my wife's great great uncle was Sidney Daniels, a third class steward who survived the sinking of the Titanic.
Well, through a well-known Genes Connecting website, I have just made contact with his daughter!!
I am just soooo excited. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Thanks for listening, and sorry for bursting!

Thudnut - don`t apologise!! Its great to hear news like this!! ;D ;D Gives us all hope. And, of course, we ARE all interested (unlike certain family members I could mention!! ::) ::) ).
I am really happy for you. What a fantastic feeling, you must be on cloud nine.
Keep us all posted
sheddyg :)
-
:D (unlike certain family members I could mention!! ).
Yes how come that happens there's always one or two members in the family that is totally uninterested in the Family tree !! ???
-
My lot too, including the ever-suffering Mrs B. I wouldn't care but I've taken her tree back 100 years further than mine! She says there is something wierd about people who spend so much time stalking round cemeteries!!!
Well done thudnut.

This passenger on the Titanic is a distant relative of my husband. McCrae, Mr. Arthur G.
He was on his way to propose to his girlfriend and I believe the ring was found in his pocket (He drowned and his body was recovered :'( :'( ).
I originally went looking as another family researcher had made mention that "a radio operator on the Titanic was a distant relative". I didn't ever find the radio operator but I found Arthur as a second class passenger.
Trish
PS It always seems to be my husband's family with the intriguing family history. He is not vaguely interested - but he does visit cemeteries with me and take the photographs - his interest being photography. :)

Hi Lynn,
My husband has Rostron's in his family, there are some that say that he was a relative too. I have yet to prove it but it makes a good story ;)
Pauline
-
Hi Pauline
I know what you mean, one Aunt an Uncle went on a cruise some years ago and they let slip that my Aunt was related to Arthur H :o and they were treated like royalty, i havent the heart to tell them that maybe we are not related to him :)
where are your Rostrons fom?
Lynn
-
Hi Lynn,
Edward Rostron 1817-1884 Newchurch - Waterfoot area married Maria Burslem. They had quite a few children...
Edward, Maria, Thomasine, Dora Isabella, Butterworth, Frances Maria and Louisa.
Edward was a Felt Carpet Manufacturer of some standing! Haven't as yet gathered much about him pre Maria.
But along the way I have come across a lot of Rostron's who all have the same claim to fame :D I guess no harm - no foul ;) ;) what do you say!!
Pauline
-
I say the same :)

Here's an interesting link to a site (appears to be a work in progress) with detailed biographical information of (some) Titanic passengers and crew members. Includes census info and photographs.

Article from my FH notes;
Mary Ellen, Benny and their sons left England in 1912 to come to Canada. They had sailed shortly after the Titanic and I can recall the stories they always told about seeing debris and bodies floating in the ocean as they neared North America. Lawrence was only 12 when they sailed but he talked about it all his life. They settled in Toronto, Ontario. I did not know Uncle Benny as he died before I was born but I knew Auntie Mary Ellen and I used to go and spend holidays with Lawrence and Doris (his second wife)....Cousin Wanda
Not nice but historical fact so the note stays.
-
No Titanic/Britannic connections, but my husband's Uncle Jack Hill sailed on HMS Celtic which arrived at Ellis Island, NY, on 20 April 1912 - so the ship must have been very close behind the Titanic. Uncle Jack was only 19, going to seek his fortune in the US.....we think he ended up in Iowa.....
Any Iowa Hills out there?!! :)

I have a article that says that the Mackay-Bennett recovered 306 bodies.
116 of these were buried at sea.
Does anyone why some were buried at sea and others taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia for burial?

Dave,
Family gossip no more - Charles Herbert Lightoller (2nd Officer Titanic) is a descendant of Rodger de Lihtolres (12th Century Littleborough - from Henry Fishwick's History of Rochdale). I have a copy of the back of a painting of Wyndebanks written on by Charles' wife quoting some of the family history from Fishwick's book.
I also see from other posts that you are struggling to connect the Yorkshire families (Lightowler(s)) with those of Lancashire (Littleborough) - so am I! If you would like to discuss, let me know.
Regards
Paul

Any details on Cribbs family? John H. Cribb died Titanic but 17 year old daughter Lillian M. Cribb rescued by Carpathia (wife, 2 sons & another daughter in England were supposed to follow in another ship).
No relation of mine but John H, Cribb was butler to Frank Jay Gould on yacht "Helenita" and my great-grandfather was her captain.
-
I have 2 confirmed rellies who died on the Titanic...Shadrach & Harry Gale, they were brothers & miners who were travelling to Idaho Springs, California & came from Calstock in Cornwall.
Interestingly...I am also researching the Lightowlers as my gg grandma was Elizabeth Lightowler b1842 in Selby, who married William Richardson. I'm now wondering if I have anymore rellies involved with the disaster??

Southampton has just had Titanic week and last sunday a service was held on the 95th anniversary of the sinking of the ship. In the old Cemetery on Southampton common are 46 memorials each with names of people who died on the Titanic and came from Southampton. The voluntary organisation I help out with have lots of information on the Titanic and list of those who died. If anyone on roots thinks that they have a relative on the memorials in the cemetery I would be happy to go and take a photograph as I have the plot no's for each grave. Last sunday we laid posies on them
-
I hope there'll be some kind of national commemmoration in 2012, on the 100th anniversary. I think it's too easy at such a distance in terms of time, for people to forget this was a real horror story that cost hundreds of lives quite unnecessarily. That should be remembered and kept in mind for future reference.

Hi, I have been told by my father that Charles Lightoller (2nd Off-Titanic) was my great uncle. My grandfathers name was Frank Whitteron Lightoller, who went on to marry Moira Dorothea Hannen. I am trying to trace my family on fathers side, but it's alot harder than I thought. Any feedback/help would be great. Thanks.
-
The other sister ship was the Olympic all three ships were in accidents.,
Lightowler came from If think Chorley in Lancashire.
A lot of artefacts were taken frrom the vessell by Ballard and salvagers. That was in effect a grave for the passengers that died on it.
There was another ship not many people know about and it is the Empress of Ireland. which was almost as bad as Titanic but doesn't get mentioned.

I am related to at least 2 members of the Titanics crew.
Frederick Fleet...the lookout who spotted and reported the iceberg..and Able Seaman - Joseph Scarrott.
I may even be related to two more crew members, William Sivier & Bertie Wilson...both barman I think....neither survived....but both Frederick & Joseph did....both giving evidence at the enquiry.
Frederick Fleet commited suicide by hanging in 1965 after his wife died in Dec 1964..He became very depresed after her passing. His brother in law threw him out of his home to add to his woes. So Fred hung himself in his brother in laws back garden from the clothes pole.
He was buried in a paupers grave in Southampton, and until recently he didn't have a headstone. But the kind folks of the Titanic Society brought and payed for one which carries a picture of the Titanic.
Freds grt grandmother, Alice Wilson, was the sister of my grt grt grandfather William.

My husband had 2 relatives on the Titanic:
1. Arthur (Archie) Barratt, aged 15 yrs, bellboy - he was his father's first cousin son of Margaret Black & Arthur Barratt
2. Herbert Hensford, butcher -he was my husband's great aunt's husband, her name was Alice Beck, they were only married a couple of weeks before the Titanic set sail, and when we met her in 1968 she had been a widow for 56 years.
-
thanks for the info interesting

I forgot to say, sadly they were both lost in the sinking.

Wow thanks for posting the Pic of Archie Barratt. Do you mind if I take a copy for my records? I have been collating photagrahs of all the crew for a project I am working on and have around 335 of them now. I have been looking into many of the crew and uncovered a few surprising details.
Surving Trimmer Walter Fredericks was my great-grandfather.
Beccavblack I have some interesting information on Herbert Hensford if you'd like it including a copy of a hand written letter by him. Feel free to contact me at * if you wish me to send it to you.
Cheers,

Of course. Here's a clearer one...

While researching my family tree I discovered my wife had a first cousin on the Titanic. He was part of the H&W Guarantee Group - Frank (Francis) Parkes. It appears Frank was 'unique' - in that he sailed on the maiden voyage of both the Olympic and Titanic as a member of the Guarantee Group. As you will know - all members of the Group were lsot. His body, if discovered, was never identified.

Apparently my great great grandfather worked in the shipyards building the Titanic. I'd like to know how I can verify this? It's simply a family legend at this point.
His name was Thomas McCluskey. He was born on 9 Sep 1876 in Mayo, Ireland. He was living in Glasgow, Scotland since he was at least 4 years old. He worked as an Iron Dresser. I don't know when he would have gone to Belfast to work on the Titanic, whether he was already working there or went there to work on the Titanic specifically.
Do any records exist for the workers who built the Titanic?

Hi.
My late grandfather Bernard Arthur Barratt told me that Archie Barratt who was on the Titanic was one of our relatives. I paid no heed to this claim at the time but since his passing in 2012 I have tried to find out how we are connected.. if at all.

Yes - What an amazing story she told - maybe in practise of surviving all 3 disasters . . .
-
I don't have any ancestors who were connected with the Titanic but at one of my local cemeteries - Preston Cemetery, North Shields - there is an inscription at the base of a large family memorial for a William Thomas Stead who drowned. This is the inscription:
'ALSO OF THEIR SON WILLIAM THOMAS STEAD JOURNALIST
CHAMPION OF DEFENCELESS WOMANHOOD APOSTLE OF UNIVERSAL PEACE
FOUNDER OF REVIEW OF REVIEWS AND AUTHOR OF THE MAIDEN TRIBUTE OF MODERN BABYLON (1885) WHO WENT DOWN WITH THE TITANIC IN MID ATLANTIC APRIL 15TH 1912 AGED 62 YEARS'

My grandfather, together with another lad from the village, booked to sail on Titanic but were prevented from sailing by family illness. They completed the crossing three weeks later.
Their "narrow escape" was reported in the local press.
Two years later he made the crossing again, on board Olympic, sister ship to Titanic.
-
None on Titanic or Britannic as far as I know but my 3xgreat grandmothers cousin was a steward on the 3rd of the sister ships, The Olympic, the other triplet. Lewis George Newman. His dad came from Essex and moved to Southampton.
-
Not a relative but Violet Jessop survived the Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic.

My great-great aunt, Harriet Barden Parsons, had a nephew by marriage named Philip Roy Pont who married a Titanic survivor, Annie Harper, who was 6 at the time of the sinking. Philip was born in Heathfield, Sussex, but the couple lived in Scotland. He was a clergyman.
