Hi ,
I am looking for George FREEMAN b Cumberland 1831 and his wife, Susannah ( nee STUTCHBURY) b 1839, Whitechapel.
They had
Edward John b 1864 b Bromley
Jessie M b 1869 b Limehouse
by 1891, they also had:
Ethel, Hilda and George
They were living in London in 1881
George was a mariner so may be away.
Any help really appreciated, as I cannot find George FREEMAN's birth anywhere and hope he may show up in 1841 onwards with parents and siblings
Thanks kindly
Jocelyn

There is no census for Whitehaven 1841 online....maybe need to go to the local
-
Sorry I pressed the wrong key :-[
Anyway...
as I was saying, can't find 1841 Whitehaven census on Ancestry...if you could get someone to look in the Cumbrin Records Office you might find something.
On 1851 the only Freeman I have found in Whitehaven is
Ann Freeman b 1803 Cumberland (Servant unmarried)
HO107/2436 3 287 5
42 Market place
Whitehaven
in the household of Richard Bell (hairdresser)
There is however in Bowness in 1851
HO107/2432 9 100 23
Edward Freeman b 1803 Whitehaven, Durham (blacksmith)
Hannah Freeman b 1803 Whitehaven, Durham
and Bowness 1841
HO107/164/8
Edward Freeman b 1801 blacksmith
Hannah Freeman b 1801
Mary b 1827
Hannah b 1839
Obviously they may well not have any connection, however that birthplaec of whitehaven...Durham is an interesting entry and worth consideration don't you think?
-
Thank you so very much Nellie! This has given me lots of clues- I was quite clueless before:-))
You are right - I will try the Cumbrin board and see what comes up.
Am very pleased with what you have found so far though - many thanks again
Jocelyn

Sorry Jocelyn that should have read CUMBRIAN Records Office..I type too quickly when I'm excited to have found something...and so I make silly typing errors :-[
-
No problem Nellie- I know the feeling well...:-))
I am now working away on all your clues and having great fun!
Cheers and many thanks again

If there is anything else you would like looking up just let me know.

ooooh - you shouldn't have said that!!
I would love to find Susannah b 1839 and Hilda Susan FREEMAN in 1891 if at all possible
They both died in the 1890's - Hilda was only 20 when she died in 1899.
Also, 1891, looking for William HALL b Cornwall and Elizabeth Jane HALL b 1843 Cornwall ( sometimes Devon)- children will be :
Evelyn, b 1868-Devon
Samuel Romilly b 1872-Devon
Lilian b 1877 Mile End
William H b 1878 Mile End
William was a mariner - or engine fitter
Any help would be fantastic
Kind regards

I have to go to bed before the bewitching hour as I have an early start tomorrow, but I will be back online tomorrow night, so will check in again then.

Hi Nellie,
Thanks again for all the excellent research! I thing Elizabeth HALL is probably the right one but I don't know why the kids aren't with her- may be they are visiting a married sibling- Florence HALL had married Gordon SAIES in 1889, and Lois HALL had married Edward FREEMAN, but all the others married after 1901.
Samuel was also known as Rom ( Samuel Romily HALL).
I cannot find who Lilian married - my computer froze and I lost a lot of data a couple of weeks ago, but I seem to recall she married someone around 1905 and had at least 2 sons- one was killed in WW2..but I absolutely cannot rememer the details.
I really appreciate all your help. many thanks indeed.
Cheers

I've had a good look for Samual, Lialin and evelyn on the 1891 I just can't find them.
Also I've looked through Deaths and Marriages...there are loads of Evelyn Halls getting married at the right time..so it's a bit mad. What I would need to do is find all the possible spouses names and then check census post-marriage to see if an Evelyn something was born in devon to make a possibel connection...it may take a while!

'Hi all,
I'm having no luck at all in locating a George Freeman, b. 1828-1832 in Whitehaven area, according to the 1871 and 1881 census in Middlesex. He was a mariner, rigger by trade from his marriage record in 1861 in Middlesex to a Susannah Stutchbury. His occup in 1871-1881 was a mariner or rigger and was living in Stepney area of London/Middlesex. His father, according to the 1861 marriage record was also George Freeman, clothier. There was no suggestion his father was deceased in his marriage record.
I can not locate either father or son in the 1841, 1851 or 1861 Census'' anywhere. I realise his son my be at sea but felt he would be listed in the 1841 at least with his father or mother (unknown). Any help at all is appreciated.
Would it have been probable that a clothier would have had a son in Cumberland and then travelled to London in 1830's or 1840's?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi baptism of a George Freeman to George and Mary Freeman 8th Feb 1829 born 17 jan 1829 at St George in the East Tower hamlets father was cordwainer living in 2 Virginia Court Chapman St
-
Hi Momo and Claire,
Thank you for your replies. Yes, I did locate that George Freeman in 1841. I just wondered if it was logical for him to be named a clothier by his son George in 1861 as he appeared to be involved in shoes prior to that. I guess it is possible. I have someone in Whitehaven going to check on any Freeman births/baptisms or marriages there as I have no other link. He may have been born there and moved with his parents to London and was then baptised.
I might see if I can find a baptism of one of the other children of George and Mary and see if it may help.
Thank you again.
Regards,
Jim

Good Morning To Everyone
Please can anyone help me with my enquiry on both 2nd g.grandparents. George Freeman Abt.1830 and Susannah Stutchbury Abt.1839 London, England.
I have very little knowledge on both of them and am trying to find George Freeman's parents???
Luckily I have attached some recent info about George's Wife Susannah Stutchbury as a result of 'rootschat' from over 16yrs ago that I've literally just seen 😳
So moving forward, I would be really grateful for anyone's help with my 3rd g.grandparents (son George Freeman Abt.1830) 🙏🏻
Thank you

Good Afternoon to Girlguide snd MaureeninNY
Sending my thanks to you for your kind response. I have now updated my Ancestry with their marriage certificate. But still lots of research to so as I'm unsure about George's Parents.
I have a 'FREEMAN' family tree starting with George Freeman 1830 Whitehaven, but no dates yet for his father George?
