Can anyone help me with the birth date of Jane McCowan/McGowan please. I think it may be around 1861-1865. She married John Clark Hairstens in 1882 at St.Giles, Edinburgh.
Could you also help with any dates and info on her parents please ? Robert (?) McCowan/McGowan and Sarah Cairns.
Thank you very much.
Regards

Just bits of info as I haven't viewed any certs. just done some searches. There is no birth of a Jane McG(C)owan in the period you are looking at with parents Robert and Sarah. There is however this:
JANE CAIRNS Birth: 14 JUL 1862 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:Mother: SARAH CAIRNS
There is a simultaneous entry for the same birth in Stirling:
14 JUL 1862 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
I can't remember the fine detail, perhaps someone else can, but I think this normally means that the baby was born away from the mother's usual place of residence and was therefore registered in both places.
These details, extracted birth records on IGI, normally indicate that the child was illegitimate.
In respect of Sarah, there is no marriage entry showing for her to a McGowan either on IGI or on Scotlands People post 1855. There is though a death entry showing on SP in 1882 in Anderston, Glasgow City for a Sarah McGowan, other name Cairns, born 1813.
I can also see her in the 1881 Census I think:
Sarah McGowan, Lodger, Widowed, age 60, Tailoress, b.Ireland
Francis McReddie, Head, married, age 25, Puddler, b. Glasgow
Hannah McReddie, Wife, age 24, Winder in cotton mill, b. Kirkintiloch, Stirling
Address: 46 Rose Street, Govan, Lanark
Given the birth entry in Kirkintilloch, I wondered if there was some connection between Sarah and the Hannah showing in the 1881 Census.
It would probably be worthwhile you viewing Sarah McGowan's death cert in 1882 to see whether it can provide you with any additional information.
Regards.

Hi Foz
From their marriage cert of 1882, Jane's parents were Thomas McGowen, tailor and Sarah, maiden surname Cairns.
Definitely Thomas not Robert.
I'll check out the 1891 for a place of birth.

Hi Foz
I can't locate them on the 1891 but on the 1901, John is dead and Jane is a widow, living 145 High Street, Dumfries with the children you named on the other thread. she is a hosiery seamster, aged 38, born Wigtownshire, Stranraer.

Just checked the Stranraer out and found the birth reg of Jane -
4th September 1862 Jane McCowen, Father Thomas McCowen, Tailor journeyman and Sarah, maiden surname Cairns. Residence - Castle St., Stranraer.
The parents married 7 January 1851, Old Luce.

On the 1871 Census, Thomas and Sarah McGowan are living at London Road Stranraer
Thomas, 49, Tailor, workman, born Wigtown, Glenluce
Sarah, 45, Ireland
James, 17, tailor workman, b. Glenluce
Annie, 14,
Jane, 8,
Elizabeth, 6
Janie or Jennie, 3
Isabella, 19 , sewing and housework, b. Glenluce
The other children all born Stranraer.
I'll have to check death certs for parents of Thomas and Sarah. Both are deceased on Jane's marriage cert.

This is getting very strange ??? If Monica's 1881 find of Sarah the widow is correct - and it seems so then Thomas died 1871-1881:
The only death of a Thomas McGowan/variations that I can find is of a Thomas Hairstane McGowan in Dumfries in 1872, aged 50. Fine, but he was the husband of an Agnes Miller.
The only bpt. that I can find anywhere in Scotland 1818-1824 of a Thomas McGowan is of a Thomas Hairtane McGowan, Dumfries 23 Mar 1822, son of William McGowan and Jean, maiden surname Hairtane.
The only other explanation is that they were either RC - Sarah born Ireland or that they belonged to a breakaway Presbyterian group. The RC seems the most likely.
The death, though is strange. he would have had to be registered ??? ??? ???

I don't think the Glasgow Sarah is the correct one. She was the widow of a Patrick McGowan, boilermaker. Also her age at death, 69 in 1882, is out if Sarah married to Thomas was c.45 in 1871.

Thanks Monica. I'll look some more. Interestingly she was born Ireland ???
Just checked the marriage certificate again. Jane's parents were both alive - well not shown as deceased on the certificate.
Back to the search ;)

Right - got them on the 1881:

In 1891
Sarah, aged 65, is a widow, living at the same address as above, A seamstress, b. Ireland.
With her are daughter Jessie and grandson John Higgins, aged 2

Hi Foz, hoping you are still on here. John Clark Hairstens and Jane McCowen are my Great Great Grandparents. I’ve recently updated my Ancestry tree as their son John Clark Hairstens b1884 in Dumfries is actually my Great Grandfather John Thomas Maxwell. I discovered he’d changed his name….presumably after he left his first wife in Penpont (Nellie Morrison)! If you’re still on here would love to connect? 🙂 and anyone else researching the Hairstens or McCowen lines.
