Title: Mug Shots #0
Post by: Boongie Pam on Saturday 18 September 04 17:38 BST (UK)
Okay then the "meet" is well on the way to being planned but for those who can't attend or those who don't want to turn up to a lot of strangers - place your face!

I don't have a photo manipulation programme at the moment so forgive the size of the piccy.  Here's me!

Okay, I've cheated it's about 25 years old!

I don't believe it :o

In an attempt to upload my obligatory 'This was me when I was little" photograph,I selected my favourite one (with a mildly amusing story connected to it) ,managed to scan it OK,and then I tried and tried to get it to upload, and could I do it? could I ....! no I couldn't  :(

I think it must be a firewall thing, or a connection thing,it could be a browser thing, maybe an antivirus software thing, but I suspect, in all probability, it's an incompetent user thing ;D

I did have a bright idea though, could someone else do it for me if I emailed the image to them?  :-\

Its a JPEG and 28kb, so if anyones willing to give it a go,PM me with an email address and I'll send it over :)

Mick ;)

Edit:It's OK,Kazza's sorted it for me ;D

Title: Re: Mug shots
Post by: M.T.H on Monday 20 September 04 02:44 BST (UK)
Goodness,now I'm embarrassed :-[

But it had to be done :)

OK now the mildly amusing story.

That photo was taken in the 60s when we lived in Khartoum.Seconds after it was taken I had my first car crash (to date I've only ever had two)

It might be worth noting that 'my' car was the earlier model of Barry Bears car (which if you look carefully is sporting a rather fetching blue light and some go faster stripes)

Due to my relative lack of experience in the world of motoring,I 'got out' of the vehicle by stepping on the back of it and guess what? it pivoted on the rear axle and the front shot up and both me and the car ended up sprawled on the lawn much to the amusement of my parents and their friends who had witnessed the spectacle.

Once I had composed myself, and to prove to all of the watching adults that I was,in fact, a very good driver,I decided on an exhibition of my skills. That would impress them I thought.

We lived in a huge house with a veranda that seemed to go on forever and so I positioned my machine at one end and set off as fast as I could go.

I was determined to impress, and as I whizzed by, I had a look to make sure everyone was watching, but they weren't,so I got their attention by shouting something like"hey, look at me,vrooom" Once I realised that I had their undivided attention,I concentrated on my display, but it was too late,I was running out of veranda and everyone was watching,I didnt know how to stop and I shot off the end,and had my second ever accident.

But the worse thing was that it was about a 6 foot drop off the end and I landed in the biggest, nastiest thorne bush you have ever seen(ouch).

Of course all the adults rushed to my aid and found me with loads of  huge thorns stuck all over. It took forever to get them all out.

I went off cars after that, and adults ;D

Title: Re: Mug shots
Post by: Berlin-Bob on Monday 20 September 04 08:22 BST (UK)
Here's a reply to a similar question I posted on another topic:

Quote
your pictures probably have names ending with .bmp (BitMaP Format)

If you load the picture in a program like IrfanView (freeware) then you can
a) change the format from BMP to JPG which needs less bytes, and then
b) in the "image" menu there is a "resize" option. you can change the size of the picture to anything you want.

if you already have your pictures in JPG ot GIF, just use b)

another tip:
If you have scanned the picture in using a scanner (probably 300 dpi) and want to print it, then you need to size it down to about a quarter (75 dpi)

Hope this helps

You can download IRFANVIEW from:  http://www.irfanview.com/

I think a size of 200- 250 pixels looks OK.

(I still think we need a "technical help" board, so we can find this sort of stuff quickly ... !)

As to my pictures, I am camera shy, so here is my passport photo and (another) picture of me, from my daughter:

Post by: Lloydy on Monday 20 September 04 08:32 BST (UK)

I was just going 'on patrol'. This involved quite a bit of pedalling as we lived on a hill, but I had to do my duty. Poor Grandad, he, I think, had the job of walking behind me to make sure I didn't cause trouble, although I don't remember ever catching him. ;D

;D Mick, I believe the brakes were only an optional extra on that model. Great story! ;D

Cheers Barry ;D,

Y'know, I've often wondered why I had total brake failure that day,and now I know why,there weren't any >:(

I'm not being cynical (well OK,just a bit),but I'm starting to think that my parents knew it had no brakes and that they wound me up knowing what I would do, thus providing the perfect 'party piece' to amuse their friends ;D

To be honest, although I was done with cars after that,I would have loved to have owned a 'Babe magnet' like the one you had.
See how the ladies react, even today ;D Respect. 8)

Newbie,

While you were on holiday, RootsChat started a new thread: The Lighter Side, which has been taken literally.

All of a sudden, all these serious, (dare I say it ?) somewhat staid seeming, sometimes even boring (I'm going to get lynched !)  geneaolgists have been going crazy, and discovering that they (still) have a sense of humour, and that this is a great place to show it !  :P

I think this thread is GREAT !,  so come and join us !

Anything you don't know (on the technical side) just ask !

Mine is already in jpeg.  I scanned it in, then downsized it as small as it would go, but when I tried to load it onto the site, it came back as the original size.  I shall get my computer wiz kid to call round when I get back from my Mum's in a fortnight.
I spent nearly all day yesterday trying to do it.  Must get on with the packing now.

remember to change ALL the \ to /, and just to be sure, when saving, name your picture file without blanks (I think that's because of the Linux Server)

i.e.  C:/My Documents\My Pictures\my piccys\little me.JPG
becomes C:/My Documents/My Pictures/my piccys/little_me.JPG

Also:  when resizing with IRFANVIEW, remember to "save as ..." to get a new, smaller file. Just clicking "save" re-saves the old size !

Keep trying, you'll get there !  remember what Kazza said: I can do it, I can do it .......

 Hi Darcy,

We had never had an animal until 19 years ago. My husband & I went away on holiday and our then 18 year old daughter got this furry bundle! you can imagine the family row we had - two weeks dirty washing - a son who said"the cat goes or I go!" (he now is a cat lover).  Daughter went back to Uni.  the cat & son stayed.

Matty is in very good health, deaf as a door nail still very clean and good company.

Hiya All,

Loving the pictures - even if I need a magnifying glass lol!

For the people learning how to play with pics, don't give up!

When you are saving your picture to the new size it may ask you for what "quality" you want reduce it.  That's how you reduce the size of the file.

The big grumpty pic of me which is far too massive lol, is only 109k because I reduced the quality by half.

P ;D

Hi Sylviaann  ;D

speaking of age -

I was once described by a workmate as 'well preserved'
I didn't know whether to be complimented or insulted. ???

Everyone looks so happy in their photos - I hate being photographed and look as if I have just discovered that I have spent 20 years up the wrong tree :o

Thanks for your help Fitty - not to mention the introduction!!

I have found this thread really interesting. I didn't read it for ages though because I thought it was about those old pictures of criminals that you sometimes get from criminal records.... And I though to myself, ""ah, I don't have any criminal ancestors, so I'll read a different thread..." Then I saw how popular it was and thought "Hmm, I must be wrong. It is far too popular to be about convict picture."

I am very dumb at times.

Is that your ancestor???????

There is another thread about people with trees going back to Adam and Eve.  You can add King Arthur to yours, I dare you.

Hi Jill,

Congratulations at becoming a pensioner  & a Grandmother.  I am now both althought the children came first.  Yesterday I spent most of the day sat in a large cardboard box with the two youngest of my grandsons.  (I must admit I am a bit batty and previously worked with "under fives" & still not grown up!!!!! despite my birth cert.

So Jill enjoy you Grandchild & hopefully retirement.

Best wishes.
