Title: Can you help ID a WW1/WW2 uniform
Post by: wonkiewidge on Tuesday 04 July 06 12:59 BST (UK)
Hello,

Could any body help me identify whether these two uniforms are WW1 or WW2?

It has been suggested that one of the cap badges could be Royal West Kent Infantry.

Depending on which war it is would give me a definite answer to which Tommy England it is!

Thanks in advance,

Linda

that uniform looks pretty smart, looks like  a mess or dress uniform, cap badge looks like a prancing horse

good conduct chevron, possible machine gunners sleeve badge

so I'd say he's a regular in the royal west kents round about the WW1 era

2nd uniform picture is that of the The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). The badge is as follows, the white horse of Kent on top of a scroll with the word INVICTA set in Old English lettering and underneath this is the regimental title Royal West Kent.

That was my first thought Chris (my other was the Middlesex but I dismissed that as the inner section of the badge is not as full as it should be if it was that regiment).  The inner "figure" certainly follows the line of that of the serpent coiled around the staff (Rod of Aesculapius)  whilst the outer being that of the laurel wreath. However the cap badge is none too clear and I can not see a crown nor scroll work that would be there if this is the right regiment. Taking it that the collar dogs would not have these bits on it I would also say that it is the Royal Army Medical Corps

Hello,
             Harribobs & old Rowley,

Now you've confused me. ???

I believe the two pictures to be one and the same person, Tommy England. Unfortunately as well as being my grandfathers name it was also his son's name. If I can date the photo to ww1 or ww2 I will know which Tommy it is.

Is it possible that Tommy jnr. enlisted as a regular before WW2 then change uniform once war broke out?

If this is my uncle he would have been born early to mid 1920's.
If it is his father (my grand father) it must be the Great War as he was born in 1899.

If this helps this is my grandfather in ww2.

my first thought is that they are a generation apart

a soldier that fought in 14/18 will be twenty older when the 2nd WW broke out, your man in the first picture looks early 20's to me
