Title: Birth look up help
Post by: pettsy on Sunday 16 July 06 10:28 BST (UK)
Hello can anybody help me?
I am loking for the birth of Lillian Geary, her father was William Geray, a Bricklayer.
She was married in 1891 to a Albert E Turner, and was 21 years old, so she must have been born 1870.
Address at the time of marriage was 454 Garrison Lane. St Andrew's Bordesley Warwick.

I do not know here mothers name, but would like to be able to order her birth cert.

Can anyone help??

Thank you.  :)

Looking at the 1881 census of Aston, theres a Lilly Geary b1870 Birmingham - father William - a BrickMakers Labourer - is this her ?

Presume you have her marriage cert to verify this ?

Her birth isnt (yet) transcribed in FreeBMD ... but if its her mothers name you want - its Mary A Geary born around 1826 in Studley, Worcs.

Thank you for looking for me.
Maybe her birth wasn't registered.

I was hoping to find her mothers maiden name.

I wonder if I could find her parents marriage certificate, Mary and William?
Did Lillian have any older siblings on the 1881 census?
That way I can guess when they were married?

Thanks for you help NecroMancer.

Pettsy  :)

Thank you.
I will have to search the books at the FRC.
I have found the birth for Mary Jane Geary in Aston Sept Q 1867 6d 267.
I will order that one, and see if it is the corect one. At least I will have the mothers maiden name if it is.

Thank you for all you help.  ;)

Hi well I finally have the birth certificate for Lily's sister, MARY JANE GEARY b. 24th Aug 1867. 2 Palmer Street, Deritend.
Father William Geary Brick Maker Journeyman.
Mother Mary Ann Geary late HEWSON/FLEWSON  ??? formerly BRADLEY.

I wonder why Lily wasn't registered. She must be there somewhere, but under what name???

I might see if I can now get the birth cert of a child born after Lily.

Did you know that they are at 2 Palmer Street in 1871 mistranscribed as Jarvey.

RG10 /3134 folio 48 page 29.

I was trying to trace them backwards,to see when Mary stopped being a Hewson/Flewson and married William Geary.

I'll try some more later.

Ahhhhhh  ;D

This looks like a possible first marriage.

Mary Ann Lee Bradley (also down as Mary Annie) is on the same page as a Thomas Hewson in Aston in March 1846 volume 16 page 254.

Will look to see when Thomas died.

And.........there is a possible marriage of a Mary Ann Hewson and a William Garry(Garrey) they can't make up their mind how to spell it  ;D

It is in Dec 1875 in Aston volume 6d page 472.

From previous censuses it would seem as though some of the older kids were officially born Hewson. They all(including Mary Ann) appear to have taken the Geary surname before they actually married.  ;)

Hope this helps a little.

Regards

Carol

Thank you Carol,
I did find out that the Geary's were down as Jarvey in 1871, which was a surprise  :o

Great I would like to get a copy of the marriage certificate for Mary Ann & Thomas Hewson, thank you.

Maybe Lily is down as Lily Hewson.
She was born about 1870.

Thank you, you have been a great help.

This is getting even stranger  ???

I have looked up all the children...............

Allen Hewson b. Mar Q 1854 Birmingham

George Geary Hewson b. Dec Q Birmingham

William Geary b.Sept Q 1859 Aston

Ellen Garray Hewson b.Dec Q 1860 Birmingham

Emma Geary Hewson b. Mar Q 1863

Mary Jane Geary b.Sept Q 1867 Aston

Lily Hewson b. Dec Q 1869 Aston

Why are they all Hewson's and Mary Jane a Geary?
Yet even with the surname Hewson they have Geary with it.
Were the children born while she was a widow, and not yet married to William Geary?

Did she have two chaps on the go at once, surely not  :o

I cannot find the death of the Hewson chap either?

I will order the birth certificate of Allen the eldest child, and Lily the youngest (my gg Gran)

Just a thought Pettsy, maybe she separated from Mr Hewson, but of course that meant she couldn't marry Mr Geary, but it didn't stop her "living" with him and having is kids  :o

She seems to have named a few of them with 'dad's surname but legally she was still Hewson when she gave birth to them.

Did dad register the birth of Mary Jane, and automatically the registrar thought she was a Geary?

As you say very odd indeed- keep us informed once you get any relevant certs.

Carol

PS two chaps on the go at the same time sounds like too much trouble to me ;)

Hi Carol,

I have just looked at the birth cert for Mary Jane Geary.
The informant is Mary Ann GEARY, she marked X.
William Geary is named on the birth cert too.

What I think I will do is order Allen Hewson's birth cert as he is the eldest, I expect him to be Mr Hewson's son.
Order William Geary's birth cert, his full name is William Thomas Edward Jordene Geary  :o maybe he is William Geary  son from his first marriage (if there is a first marriage?)
and I will order Lily Hewson (my gg gran)

I think you may be right. She split from her first husband Mr Hewson, and as divorce was just for the rich and famous in those days, she just left him and set up home with Mr W Geary.
Oooh the scandal it must have caused in those days  ;)

I will order on Tues, they usually take one week, as soon as I get them I will post an update.
I can't wait now.

Thank you for all your help.

Have just had a thought  ;) have you tried posting on the Warwickshire board, incase someone has access to the parish registers for baptisms in Aston?

It might tell you who mum and dad actually are.

All the best

Alan Hewson son 7 scholar

And look at this .......... 8) boarder William Garrey  unm 31 Brickmaker. b Bham

I have looked for a Thoms Hewson death in Bham between 1851 and 1861 and find there are 4 possibles in Free BMD.Never mind those who are not on there yet.

The ages of the children point to the 1846 Bradley/Hewson marriage being correct though.

Blimey Carol you are GREAT  ;)
That is fantastic.
They have been found at last.
And William was the border  :o :o
Mmmmmm it must have been more than bricks he was laying  ;)

I have just telephoned my mum with the news (it's dad's side of the family) dad will be very pleased.

I think I will get the marriage of Mary and Thomas too.
And now there are two more older children, I had Allen as the oldest.

I will have a look at see if I can work out the death.
When his last child was born, once we work out whose kids are who.

Thank again for all you help.

Hi Carol  :)

The certificates arrived this morning  ;D but I wont see them until next week as mum has them and she is going away today  :'(

Anyway he is info I have.

1) the marriage of THOMAS HEWSON Full age. A Brasspounder? Father HENRY a Brasspounder.
MARY ANN LEE BRADLEY Minor  :o Father Benjamin Roller?  Bricklayer?

2) the birth of Lily Hewson. 28th Nov 1869.
Mother Mary Ann Hewson.
Father William Hewson  :o Labourer.
1, PALMER ST ASTON.

3) marriage of WILLIAM GEARY 51 Bachelor. Bricklayer. Father William Geary a Brass Founder.
Mary Ann Hewson 50, a Widow. Father Benjamin a Bricklayer.

4) birth of WILLAIM THOMAS EDWARD JORDAN GEARY, 30th July 1859.
Father William Geary a Master Hair ?? (mum cannot read the rest)
Mother SOPHIA GEARY formerly JORDAN.
136 GREAT BROOKE ST ASTON.

I don't know why William is a Hewson on the birth cert, Thomas didn't have a brother called William did he?
Maybe he called himself Hewson as they were not married at that point and he wanted a name under father on the birth cert, or Mary Ann put it on  ???

I need to get the death cert for Thomas Hewson, and Allan's birth cert too.

Mmmmmmmmm  what do you think?

Pettsy  :)

Hi Pettsy

Thie is just a quick reply,as not been in from work long, but will study this more tomorrow. The William with all the names is not yours!!! His dad was a hairdesser and his mum Sophia- not Mary Ann.

The job you are trying to read is Brass Founder- ie he worked in a brass foundry.

Leave it with me- too tired to get my head round it now  :-\

Hi Carol

Thank you.

I am still trying to work out if William was married before, he was 51 when he married Mary Ann.

And there was a Geary son in between the Hewson's  ???

Brass Founder, thanks  ;)
I haven't seen it yet, mum couldn't work it out.

Speak soon.

If it said William Geary was a bachelor on the marr cert of 1875,then it means that he had not been married before(unless he was telling fibs  ;))
In the 1861 census he was the boarder and definitely stated he was unmarried.

That 1859 Wiliam Geary(with loads of middle names) isn't yours- mum is Sophia and dad is a hairdresser called William- not Mary Ann and Wiliam a bricklayer.

I suspect dad's a cousin though- but not the same chap as your William Geary.

Will summarize what I think we have now, tomorrow.
