Title: whittaker..Tullamore
Post by: redkop on Friday 28 July 06 19:34 BST (UK)
HI everyone,
I have just found out my gt gt granma's name was Eliza Whittaker, she was born abt 1846 in Tullamore. She left Ireland to come to Liverpool. She met and married John Mclennan in 1869, and had 9 children as far as I know.
Can someone help me find her. Which county is Tullamore in? Does anyone know of any Whittakers from that area?
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Red  :)

Hi Saddler and Pat,

I don't think the Whittaker in the Griffiths Valuation Index is the correct one I'm looking for. It could however be a relation. I would have thought Whittaker an unusual name in Ireland. I apologise if i'm wrong on that one!

On Eliza's wedding certificate, it gives her fathers name as James, he was a farmer. Maybe, Michael and James were brothers?

If they had moved, where is the next town they could have moved to? (!)

Thanks again,

Red   :)

Hi red.

The only James Whittaker in Offaly is as follows [see below] and
it is worth keeping in mind that marriage and birth/baptism were usually recorded in the spouse/mother parish, which may be an
adjacent or close parish.

Mike.

Whittaker, James
County:      Offaly/Kings
Parish:      Barr
Location:      Townparks
Town:                      Town of Birr
Address:                  Eden Street

Hi Saddler,

Eliza and John were married in a Presbyterian church in Liverpool. Did they have such a thing in Ireland then? Would she, or could she have changed her religion? I would have presumed she would be Roman Catholic at birth.

Is the parish of Kilbride far from the parish of Barr. I don't have the district Eliza was born in, only that it was Tullamore. If not, it looks like Michael could have been James's brother, and James went to live in his wife's parish?

Thanks again for your time,

Red   :)

Hi Red:
Yep, they had Presbyterians in Ireland back then!
Another town in Offaly not terribly far from Tullamore is Edenderry. I did a little looking around and came up with Whittakers in that area. You may want to do some "googling" using variations and see what develops.
Here are some items:

http://www.curiousfox.com/history_Ire/clare.lasso
Looking for the family of Robert Baird b.1860, gardener to the Bishop of Clare at the Bishop's residence, Clarisford. He met and married Elizabeth Whittaker from Edenderry, Co. Offaly, who worked in the Bishop's household. They married on 8/3/1887 in Killaloe and had 8 children. One of these, Harriet May Baird married Emmanuel Victor Nelson in Liverpool in 1913 and were my husband's grandparents. Any info on any members of this family gratefully received. Sue

Hi Pat and Saddler,

thanks Pat for your latest info.

I have been talking to a friend, who has a special interest in Irish history. He made the suggestion that Whittaker originates from Norfolk, and that these Whittakers could have been transplants.

What do you think?

Red.

Most certainly it is possible that your Whittaker's originated
in England if not in Norfolk.

during the priod of english rule may english families moved
to ireland to take up land, the intent being to populate
Ireland with as many english as possible in the hope that
eventually english would be the norm.

Hi Red:
I agree with Saddler about the English origins. Actually, a Whittaker was one of the Cromwellian adventurers.
"To finance Cromwell's  campaign to put down the "rebellious" Irish who just
could not accept English rule, Parliment devised a scheme where every person
who contributed  was to receive estates and manors of 1000 acres , and lands
proportionatly for less sums."

Here is a Whittaker site which could prove useful. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3741/fellow_whitaker_researchers.htm Broken Link

Good luck,

Pat

just thought I would update you with my research on this family. Well, I have hit a brick wall. I can't seem to go any further. I will keep trying, and hopefully something will turn up. One day I hope to visit where they came from, and maybe that will help. But, until then I have to keep trying from this end.

I just wanted to thank you all for helping me.  Cheers,

From the Griffiths Valuation Index, I have found my 3xgt Grandfather, James Whittaker, living in Eden St., Town of Birr, Co Offaly/Kings.

Is there a way to find out who else lived at this address with him?

Thanks,

Red  :)

Red,

The NAI has at least two wills on file which may be of interest to you.

James Whittaker (dated 1838) of Edenderry, Co. Offaly
Henry Whittaker (granted 1826) of Edenderry, Co. Offaly

Details of how to access these at the link below.

Hi Jack,

thanks for taking the time. I had nearly given up with this branch of my tree.  ::)

Would there be a way of using the information from the 1901 census ?

Please forgive my ignorance  :)

You now see  that some part of this family were still in Ireland in 36/37, you would have to try and search from then to perhaps when they immigrated, if they did.
Origins shows that Anthony Whittaker, James, William, Joseph & Bridget, Michael leased lands from lords in Ballyphilip, Birr, Clonbullogue, Kilcoursey and that a Harriet Whittaker leased out land in Edenderry. These are places to try and see at what time they may have moved from there, if they did.
If I get any more info I will forward same.
Regards,
Jack

An Andrew Whittaker still lives in Garrygolan Tullamore and could be worth a letter or phone call.
Whittaker's were in Edenderry in 1814 when William & John were signatories to the building of a wall around the church in Edenderry.

Death; 1888, Alicia, eldest daughter of the late James Whittaker, Edenderry, July 15th, at residence of her brother-in-law Robert Saunderson M.D.

1870; Mary Ann,(59) wife of Robert Knownton, eldest dtr of the late William Whittaker, Edenderry, Kings county.

Hi Jack,

thank you soooo much for all this. I am amazed and very happy. For some reason, I thought there might not be any Whittakers left. I thought I may have to go backwards from 1845 when my Eliza was born. But, this has given me a new lead. I know nothing of her family. Only that her father was James, a farmer. I don't know if she had any siblings, or what her mother's name was.

Thanks again,

Red   :)

Red

It's been so long since I made that post that I can't remember where I got the information from. It was most likely from a paysite that I was a member of at the time. I'm not so active on the family history quest at the moment.

In any event, the info I posted should be sufficient for you to apply for a copy from the NAI. There is an application form at that link address and it would not be expensive to get get a copy of both.

Good luck

Andrew Whittaker, Derrygolan is a restorer of antique furniture and from a long established family on that road. If you google his business you will get his contact details.

Hello Red
My Whittaker ancestors were certainly in Clara and Tullamore in 1810 and I have Court evidence of a my second Great Grandfather William Whittaker being there in 1775.
"It appeared from a table put before the Court that the root of the petitioner's pedigree was in one William Whittaker, who came up to King's County, Ireland, in 1775. He lived, at a place called Kilbegan, and was believed to have been lawfully married. At any rate he had two sons— John, a weaver at Kilclair, and James, a soldier. James married one Nancy McClusky, by whom he had one son, also called James. This man came to Australia, did well, was drowned In the Admella in 1859, and left considerable property both real and personal. He, however, died intestate, and search was ultimately made for heirs. It was found that Nancy McClusky, the mother of the intestate, had married a second time one James Watson, and had had issue four children. "
I have William's father as Thomas, married to Elizabeth Fuller. Lots on my Ancestry Public Family Tree.
