Post by: Suzy Camay on Sunday 06 August 06 13:27 BST (UK)
Pease can you point me in the right direction.

Im trying to find the birth place of John Wightman born in 1851.

All I have from a scottish census is that he was born in County Down.

Where can I go to look for him

Many thanks

Hi Suzy,
Have you looked at Ros Davies' website.
It has some excellent resources for anyone interested in County Down families.
There are a few John Wightmans listed- have a look and see if there is anything you recognise. Just put "Ros Davies" into a Google search- she has indexed surnames, placenames etc.
Hope this is of some use,
Regards,
Briege

I have tried the Ulster Historical Foundation ie www.ancestryireland.co.uk/
sorry no 1851’s for birth
Birth Record Wightman John 1842    Co Down
Births Wightman John 1870    Antrim
Birth Record Wightman John 1872    Co Down
Birth Record Wightman John Mains 1882    Co Down
Births Wightman John Dunseith 1907
.
Or his father if names the same might have married in same year or before
Civil Marriages Wightman John 1850    Down
Civil Marriages Wightman John 1851    Down
Civil Marriages Wightman John 1851    Down
Marriage Record Wightman John 1851    Down
Marriage Record Wightman John 1851    Down

from www.family search.com has no irish John Wightman births 1850-1852
I have tried some scottish websites to find your information.

on www.caora.net if you do a surname search not a message search, there is a big list of Wightman clues.

which census did you find him under and is there not other info about him, ie location in Scotland married children etc.
are there other census that you haven’t checked?

So the best clues above is in the marriages I think, and that will be a fee lookup from UHF

Good Luck Jim

Hi Suzy,  Have you got  his death certificate in Scotland? It ,hopefully, would give his parents names, which then might narrow down the place of birth for John,  and it might help to locate his parents marriage.

Hello and Thank you all for your help.

Jim........I found John on the 1901 Scottish census, born in County Down.

He married Euphemia Ferguson on the 4th March 1887 in Auchinleck.

His parents were David Wightman and Ann Mary, sorry I cant read her surname.

Many Thanks Suzy

P.S Me thinks I got his year of birth wrong, it could be 1845, sorry

Hi Suzy, There are only 3 David Wightmans in Griffiths Valuation, Co Down.  Two in the Parish of Killinchy, and one in the Parish of Knockbreda (townland Ballymacarret).

Do you know if the nearby Wightmans in the 1881 census i.e. William, James,  and Robert are brothers to John?   Looking at the Marriage certs in Scotland  of William(has a son David)  and Robert might confirm.. James appears to have married Eliza Glendinning in Ireland, but a look at one of James and Elizas Scottish born children birth certs would hopefully tell you where they were married!

A look at Johns death cert might confirm his mothers maiden surname as might  one of the possible brothers marriage or death certs.

Witness names on Johns marriage cert?

Just wondering if you found any information on John Wightman?  My great grandmother was Agnes Wightman (father William Wightman) who married John Thompson in 1886, Ballygowan Presbyterian, parish Killinchy.  Maybe William was related to John?
