I've borrowed a reprint of George Henry Bassett's "Co. Down Guide and Directory 1886" published by Books Ulster in 2002. Anyone with Co. Down ancestors in 1886 who would like a look up please post a message.
-
Yes please Christopher, its for all entries of my surname Gracey, including Gracie or Gracy in Comber and Newtownards areas. Many thanks for offering, best regards, Jim
-
Hello Christopher,
Any reference to Elizabeth Kerr's father Hugh in Ballywalter? My grandmother Elizabeth was born Ballywalter 2 March 1895.
Best regards,
Gary
-
Your generous offer is most appreciated. I am looking for my g.g.grandfather William Lutton who lived in Newry Co.Down. He may have been a blacksmith or similar. All I know of him is that he died before 1845. Maybe there is an entry in the County Down Directory for the Lutton family in or around Newry.
Regards
Joan
-
Joan, you should place your Lutton on its own page if I dare suggest it. To start you with definite news please look up www.familysearch.org/ Then open search, then type in William and then Lutton, then change all countries by scrolling down options to Ireland and you should be very pleased on a first enquiry, as you will then see the newry connections, and you should you will see someone has done your family tree, unless its yourself. Christopher will lead you onwards in Ireland as he does ! good luck to you both, Jim

What a treat! :o
Christopher, I am interested in Robert Rodgers, who was a tailor, I believe, in Comber about 1886. And a William McConnell, or William (Willie) John McConnell who would probably have been a farmer in the area of Comber or Newtonards.
Appreciate your kind offer.

Hi Chris
Your kind offer has left me feeling particularly greedy. Would you please look up any or all of the following folk for me please and let me know what you find.
Morrisons (particularly interested in names Hugh, Samuel and Anthony) in Magherabeg, Dromore or in Dromore village itself. But any Morrisons in Dromore or surrounds would be welcome.
McClatchey (McClatchy) in Drumbroneth, Dromore.
Murphy (particularly Thomas) in Listullycurran, Dromore I think.
Lindsay (William) in Ballymacormick, Dromore.
Jones (particularly Francis or James) in Ballysallagh, Dromore or Dromore village itself.
Thanks very much.
Kath :)
-
Hiya Kath,
Bad news I'm afraid. None of the names on your list appear in the Directory.
All the Best, Chris
-
Oh well Chris. Thanks for trying. :'( It doesn't surprise me though. My lot seem to have been so insignificant they never turn up anywhere. ;)

Thanks Christopher, Hmmm! I wonder if he was in Belfast by that time. I have the birth of a child in 1888 in Belfast. Though 1886 is when the foundling came into the family. Double Hmmm.... Would he have made better money in Belfast? That is probably a no brainer for an answer. The children after 1888 are a mix of Belfast and Comber births. Could he, or his family, have commuted by train between the two places? I do know that the growing up family lived in Bloomfield. Triple Hmmmmmm!

Would you be able to search for any Conkey's in your directory please around Kilkeel area. It would be greatly appreciated

Agnetta,
The name McAllister[ two l's] does appear in Down, whether from records I don't know, but Elizabeth McAllister was my Grandmothers mother, born in Newtownards around 1855. She married Thomas McLennaghan, and they had five children that I know of that initially settled in Scotland...... Ellen [ Nellie ]McLennaghan married Sam McTear. Annie....married a Johnny Mackin and lived in New Lanark. Margaret[ Maggie]...married a White and also lived in New Lanark. Elizabeth...married Andrew McTear and lived in Carmyle near Glasgow. Johnny....lived to 107 and settled eventually in Ontario with 10 kids. The McTears and McLennaghans also came from Newtownards in the 1800's. Sorry, can't help with the rest.
-
As far back as I can go our family has always spelt it with 0ne "L" Occasionally (in more recent years) people will write it with 2 Ls.My Mc Alisters m'd Barrett, Coulter,Mc Carthy and Mc Dowell. Maternal sides of Hodgin,Beck,Hanna,Ritchie and Adair They all seem to have been in the Hillsborough/Dromore area.(Barretts were in Donegal originally) None in Newtownards area. Thanks anyway for the info.Agnetta
-
O.K. Agnetta, didn't think it would be much good to you, but at least it you know there were some in Down, as it looked like you were giving up hope ! Good Luck !

Wonderer - frustrated beyond reason a lot of the time, but never give up hope! All the best,Agnetta

Hi Christopher,
Such a very kind offer! Would you mind having a look for my Margaret Conaway for me please? I have her in Cumberland in 1874 when she marries Joseph Kirkbride but, according to a census return, she was born in Newcastle, County Down in 1853. Her father is listed on her m.cert as William Conaway, a joiner. On her daughter's b.cert, Margaret's maiden name is spelt Cannaway.
Best wishes,
Jackie

My mother's maiden name is McClatchey, she was from Armah

Granma Anne,
I've tried the 1880 Directory which is on the Lennon Wylie site.
There's no mention of Robert Rodgers but there's a John McConnell of Mill Street listed.

Is there any mention of a John Heron who was a "Road Contractor" in Co.Down

Ros Davies' Co. Down, Ireland Genealogy Research Site which contains Surnames of Co. Down: Heron, Herron & variants (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/H/Heron.htm) doesn't show a "Road Contractor."

Theresa
Hiya Theresa,
Have you any christian names for these guys ???
Have you looked for them in Ros Davies' Co. Down, Ireland Genealogy Research Site ???
If I'd an idea of the town where they lived I could check through either Bassetts or the Belfast and Ulster directories.
A massive number of families named Annett lived in Kilkeel. There are a few of them listed in the 1880 Belfast and Ulster Directory which is on the Lennon Wylie web site ...
Annett & Co., woollen drapers
C. Annett, grocer
Jane Annett, dress maker
John Annett, woollen draper
John Annett, Royal Hotel and Posting Establishment
There were Conkeys in several places including Annaclone, Bangor, Comber, Donaghadee, Hillsborough, Killinchy, Kilmood and Knockbreda.
There are Curlets, Curletts and Curlits listed. Among the places they are to be found are Ballywalter, Bangor, Comber and Killyleagh.
There were quite a number of McLoughlins from Newry.

Hiya Kate,
I don't understand where you're receiving the post. It it's here on the board there are no problems as that's where it's meant to be received. On the other hand if it's on the line that says Welcome back Kate, you have so many messages etc (those are your personal messages) at the top of the screen then there is some sort of a problem.
Christopher

Hi Christopher,
Can you please check the bassetts 1886 Directory for a Nicholas Carney Hairdresser. In 1880 he was in listed as being at Short Strand info below. Would like to know if anyone else there too.
SHORT STRAND
Ballymacarrett Road to Albert Bridge Road
4. Carney, Nicholas, hair dresser
Thank you Betty
-
Hi Betty,
The directories only give the head of the household. Nicholas does not appear in the 1912 Ulster Covenant
so the only chance of finding who else may have been in his household is to look at the 1901 Census.
Christopher.
-
Hi Christopher,
Thank you for looking but I think Nicholas Carney is nowhere to be found after 1880 when the details I gave were recorded. I don't know where you get the Irish 1901 census anyway but somehow I don't think he would be on there..
This whole Carney family really have me going round in circles, sometime it Nicholas Carney, sometimes Nicholas John Carney, and also just John Carney.
So looks like I am still stuck, stuck, stuck.
Really do appreciate your help Christopher!!
