I'm seeking information on Frederick HAMMOCK b. abt. 1863 in Ilford, who married Emily Eve b. abt. 1867 (in Greenwich or Gravesend).
I can't seem to find them any further back than 1891.
Emily died prior to 1901, but I'm seeking her parents.
Also ...
Frederick's parents - James b. abt 1837 Barking and Sarah 1834 Little Oakley. I can trace James back to 1851 but Sarah only so far as 1871, so I hoping to find her maiden name and parent details.
Can anyone help?

Its moot what the name is, but it looks like Lord to me .... possibly Sord or Sard ...

My FreeBMD shows just 2 names with that 1853 reference ?
Marriages Dec 1853
Bourne John Dupray W.Ham 4a 19
Campion Sarah W. Ham 4a 19
Full GRO images reveals James Richard Hammock too - but sadly for my 1841 find, Sarah Lord is not on the page ... pity as her age was spot-on, whilst Ms Campion is a bit older ...
Sarah Lord married James Smith and is in Harwich in 1861 .... :-[

Sarah the wife of James was 38 on the 1871 census, 44 on the 1881 census, 58 on the 1891 census and 67 on the 1901 census.

Yet again, I have to say thank you for the helpful replies - am off to do some more digging.

Valda,
Very many thanks for all your hard work on my behalf, but ... could I be a right pain in the posterior and ask if you could kindly give me a link to the 1841 Cenus for George Eve please?
I've searched 1841 with no joy and entered HO107 458/10 folio 8 page 10 - all I get is "no matches". I know I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. :-[ :-[
Sorry to be quite such a nuisance - I'm new to this and, sadly, it shows.
Grateful thanks

I wrote in each case what the census enumerator wrote not what an indexer had interpreted they had written. I also had the knowledge to know what the surname actually was.
I don't know which index you are using to access the 1841 census. On the index I am using the family is down as Eva (which happens quite a lot in the indexes) - I don't tend to use full names to search on. In this case with only three letters in the surname I couldn't use as asterisk to replace letters, so I just searched on the place and through first names in the family with the ages I knew to within 5 years looking for likely misindexed surnames begining with e. For mispellings of Osborn I would first check on Osb*
It is quicker to use an asterisk to avoid lengthy typing, so first names are Geo*, places are Grave* Kent etc. That way I avoid missing people through poor spelling by the census enumerator and poor indexing and it is quicker to type.

Thank you so much for that.
As I said, I'm fairly new to this and am just finding my way around the various methods of searching. Until now I've been putting in all the details I (thought) I knew and couldn't understand why everyone else seemed to be getting results while I got zero returns. Putting an asterisk may seem obvious to some people, but unless someone like yourself is kind enough to explain ..... well, when you don't know - you don't know. I do now.
Following your advice, I've found the 1841 entry you mentioned on Wednesday, as well as a number of other individuals. Perhaps at last I can stop asking what must seem stupid questions.
For you patience, I thank you.

You don't ask stupid questions. You ask pertinent questions which get you the answers you need.
If you don't ask you don't find out.
That I believe is the main purpose of Rootschat - to inform and help
