Title: How to use BBC tags
Post by: Jane Eden on Thursday 16 February 06 07:13 GMT (UK)
Hi

I really struggle trying to use the tags when posting. How exactly do I use bold and a bullet point list. I got in a right mess this morning and gave up in the end using a dash and capitals instead.

I did manage a glowing, bold, pink, moving marquee a couple of times but I don't know how I managed that and it took ages. It really can't be that complicated. Can it? I am supposed to be computer literate!

Thanks

Jane

You could either highlight the section you want to alter with the mouse and then click on the tag you want to apply or if you hover the mouse over each tag you will see the appropriate commands for each and you can apply this yourself when typing

for example to get bold its [ b ] bold on and bold off [ /b]
italics [ i ] italics on [ /i ] italics off

Hi Joe - I can show off now  ;D
that resize thingy had me going nuts at first - heres what you do.

Write a phrase, then highlight it  click on the A with the arrow up and down.  It comes up with no.10, you alter that number to the text size you want.  This is 15, lets see if it works.

Yep, that worked OK, only problem is it comes in fat writing and I wanted skinny.  ???

There are two ways to use the BBC tags:

1)  click on the tag you want, they appear in your text
i.e.

[tag][/tag]

place the cursor between the ][ brackets and write your text.

it then looks like this:  [tag]your text[/tag]

2)  write your text, highlight it with the cursor,
then click on the BBC tag.

it then looks like this:  [tag]your text[/tag]

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi

I think I am OK with them now apart from bullet points. A whole string of things appear for that. How do I use those?

Thanks

Bullet points ?

Here goes .....

1) click on the BBC tag  (bottom row, last on the right, for those who didn't know)
Code: [Select]
[li][/li]
[li][/li]
for every line you want a bullet point for, place the cursor between the ][ and write your text
copy the [ li][ /li] line if you want more than two bullet point lines

It should then look like this in your reply tex:
Code: [Select]
[li]first line[/li]
[li]second line[/li]
and like this, after sending:

Wow !!!!   Well done !!!

Where's the borders ???  There ain't none  ;D

RootsChat doesn't do borders, on the contrary, it tries to break them down and create one big community.
As a sign of it's intentions borders, even on tables are frowned upon ..........

(disappears stage left, still mumbling ....)

Hi Anna,

Now I can make my posts much brighter

Yes, you can but

Don't go overboard with it !

Overdosing on it can make posts irritating to read, so some people just skip those posts altogether !

Enjoy,
Bob

Well you've taken the first step and broken down the barrier that people wrongly believe is between them and learning HTML.

Although a knowledge of HTML is very useful it is not mandatory in creating web pages/sites there are several programs available which appear to the user to act just like a normal desktop publishing program or word processor and the HTML coding is produced in the background.

Howver when things don't appear to go just as you expected its always handy to have a quick look at the source code and try and work out the problem that way

to show a url you use
[ url= ] click here [ /url ]

(take out the spaces when you actually use it)

Code: [Select]
the text you put between ] and [  is what appears to be the link whether its "click here" "follow this link" "Rootschat" or whatever

Title: Re: How to use BBC tags
Post by: Berlin-Bob on Thursday 23 February 06 07:47 GMT (UK)
Hi Newbie,

You may wish you had never asked !!

Step 1) define the table, click on the first icon
Code: [Select]

I usually find it easier to have the begginning and end tags on seperate lines
Code: [Select]

Step 2) add as many lines as you need (2nd icon)
Code: [Select]

Step 3) insert cursor between the tr] and [/tr and add the table cells (3rd icon)
Code: [Select]

Step 4) Fill in the cells (cursor between the td] and [/td )
Code: [Select]

line 1, cell 1line 1, cell 2line 1, cell 3

line 2, something or otherline 2, some more stuffline 2, yet more stuff

there must bean easier wayof making a living

line 1, cell 1line 1, cell 2line 1, cell 3
line 2, something or otherline 2, some more stuffline 2, yet more stuff
there must bean easier wayof making a living

Variations on a theme:
once you have defined one line
Code: [Select]

copy it for as many lines as you need

If you think you've mastered it, try writing the results of a look up as a table  ;D

It will look great, but you'll probably say "once is enough !!!"  ;D ;D

Good luck,
Bob

I have wanted to write up look ups in table form for ages ! so much easier to read. once I have a format worked out, when I find the ICON, is there anyway of saving it, (eg preferences) to use again, and again, and again..... ;D

Not on RootsChat, but once you have the basic format, save it in an editor, as a template, and make copies for individual postings

Tip:  use the "preview" often, to make sure it's right  :)

another tip:
It is not a "must" but I sometimes find it easier to line up the cells
i.e.
Code: [Select]

line 1, cell 1line 1, cell 2line 1, cell 3

line 2, something or otherline 2, some more stuffline 2, yet more stuff

there must bean easier wayof making a living

becomes
Code: [Select]

line 1, cell 1            line 1, cell 2         line 1, cell 3

line 2, something or otherline 2, some more stuffline 2, yet more stuff

there must be             an easier way          of making a living

if you are preparing your postings in an editor, it will be much clearer to see the columns, as columns !

as an editor you can use any text editing program such as Notepad ,Wordpad or even Microsoft Word ... Notepad is the easiest as it does not try to insert any fancy formatting of its own (if using any of the others save as a ".txt" file
There are also various text editing programs available which extend the usability of notepad.

Here's another tip, probably the most important tip !!!!

Tables are very time consuming.  In order to avoid fits of rage when you can't post all your beautifully formatted, tabularised results, because your reply session has timed out (sound familiar  ???  ;D )

prepare your table in an editor and then 'copy & paste' the results to your reply

Hi Joe,

don't forget the 'pt'.  Size is given in points, so if you want 18 point, then try this:

Code: [Select]
HELLO THERE
and it lokks like this:

HELLO THERE

Bob

ps.
to everybody trying this out,

don't overdo it in your postings, it tends to irritate a lot of people !
