Title: what would you fill in for occupation?
Post by: dawnwas on Friday 25 August 06 12:11 BST (UK)
OK so I am feeling nose.
I have been scanning all the message boards...what car do you drive, how do you speak etc etc.
Just wondered what we all got up-to job wise?
I spend my days looking after other peoples teeth as I am a Dental Hygienist ;D
I have to be thorough and pinickity about cleaning other peoples teeth, patient and tenacious at times.....stands me in good stead for tracing the family tree....nothing can be rushed.
Keep smiling :P

My job description says that I am an "Admin Assistant" but it's a lot more interesting than that!  I work with one other colleague and a team of volunteers running a Lifeskills Centre.  We have groups, mostly of children aged 10 and 11 who come to learn about keeping themselves safe by experiencing risk.

We have two former industrial units which are set out like a series of stage or film sets and represent a farm, visit to the beach, a railway crossing or rooms in a home and the students, in groups of about 5, go to each set in turn with their guide and learn safety in an interactive way.

There are about six permanent centres around the country in places such as Bristol, Bournemouth and Milton Keynes and ours in Cornwall, as well as numerous temporary events which are held usually in the summer.

We also have groups of students, the elderly, youth groups such as Guides, Scouts, Young Farmers etc.

It's a very varied and interesting job, if underpaid!  At this time of year (school hols) there is an opportunity to look at RC in an extended lunch break!

I'm an Administrator (boring) but I work for the High Weald AONB Unit.  That is one of the loveliest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the country. (Or I think so anyway!)

We don't do countryside management, more a strategic body and we deal with the councils and other bodies that are in the area.  We do a lot of promotion, and education.

I hate the work but I love the area and the team I work with.

Me? I'm just a B&B Landlady (though the place is named as a Hotel) and Steak House owner in Blackpool

Great work if you like meeting people - awful work if you hate housework!

Fantastic for me as I get so excited if we get guests who are from the areas I am researching in and even more exciting if they have a name that is in my tree lol

Poor people end up going through 100 questions before they have even got to their rooms!

I'm a health and safety professional (and please none of the jokes - I've heard them all) trying to make sure my organisation meets the law and can operate reasonably at the same time.

I must be doing OK - my colleagues are pleased to see me  ;)

My pet hate is the no win no fee lawyers... :D

Redspookhunter...sorry I lost the thread....went to bed after getting my name onto as many of the messages as I could....no,I guess fish probably don't have tongues do they ;D. :-[They can give a nasty suck though...I dangled my finger into the boating lake at west park (midlands )as a toddler...something thought I was tasty cos it either licked me with its imaginary tongue,or sucked with its big lips...I had a sore red finger for days :'(
PS do you like my new picture signature...I luv hamsters and we are not allowed them in Australia....looks a bit like the one I gave mouth to mouth to.. ;)

I was thinking of putting "drowner" - in the 19th century, a drowner was a chap who "drowned", or flooded the water-meadows in the southern chalk valleys. It sounds a bit brutal though, so it'll have to be "farmer".

I am a nurse specialising in Audiological Medicine. Love the work, hate the constraints put on us by the management which is making doing the job as we would like to do it, extremely difficult. May be forced into the private sector which would be a shame. I suppose in a 19th century census I would be described as a provider of ear trumpets, and the way things are going that is probably what I will be for the next census. ::) ;)

On the recent Aussie census I put secretary because that's my official title - I'm actually an admin assistant but their pay rates are much higher so I get the lowly secretary title and wage. Bloody Government!!!

I was working for a Domiciliary Therapy Team - a group of health professionals who go to people's homes to treat them in podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and dietetics. I did all their admin.

I am going back to work next week (after maternity leave) and I will be doing a slightly different job then - admin support for a Rapid Response group who have staff in emergency rooms, councils, rehabilitation centres, Dom teams, assessment teams, etc, who identify elderly people at risk and get them plugged into services that will hopefully stop them from turning up in emergency rooms in terrible shape.

I love the job because I work in an rundown house on the grounds of a hospital and all the other staff are out during the day - I'm there by myself so I can surf the 'net, talk to myself, pick my nose, slack off, etc, etc!

But up till next week, I guess I'm a

Senior Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations

... plus chef, chaffeur, fashion consultant, hairdresser, manicurist, nurse, psychiatrist, entertainer, swimming coach, and lost sock finder. Best job in the world!!!

Kez :)

Last census, before kids, I was a Graphic Designer. Now I'm a full time mum but by 2011, I would love to be a Reflexologist with my own small practice.
Hoping to start a course early next year if all goes well.

I'm a Housewife, Mum to 3 children, and also a part-time typist.  With all the washing, ironing, dusting, hoovering, window cleaning, gardening, school runs, nursery runs and cooking I wonder how I fit it all in ;D

I actually qualified as a Swimming Teacher and Lifeguard - part time while I was doing my A levels.

Now I'm a chartered Civil Engineer, looking after environmental infrastructure in South and Eastern Europe. (i.e. water supply, waste water disposal and treatment, waste disposal and management), so lots to do there. That pays the bills.

And for the last 10 years I've been running my own translation office, doing mostly technical stuff that other translators don't touch. That pays for my holidays.

And I still teach kids to swim at the local swimming club.

I'm just worried that one day Big Brother (East Sussex County Council) is going to tell me off so I try to limit it to early morning and lunch time.  Trouble is I work in an office which is affiliated loosely to the council and we don't like the control they have over, so my bosses don't actually mind so long as it doesn't stop me from working!!!  But you try telling that to the IT department!!!  Too beaucratic by half :(
