Post by: Bee on Monday 04 September 06 16:51 BST (UK)

and if I've posted this in the wrong place could a mod please move it.

Hi Bee

the little photo is very small, so impossible to say with any certainty, but I can see that the partings are in different places. I know some people can move their partings with no trouble, but if I move mine to the other side, or the middle, it is so painful, plus it won't stay.

There is a general likeness but, as Helen says, your avatar is a bit too small to judge anything. Is it possible to put up a larger version here?

Re partings - she might be double-crowned. I have no prob with switching my division or not even having one  ;)

Just to add my two penn'orth - I don't think it is her but there seems to be a slight resemblance, any chance she's a sister?

If it's not the same person, I've no idea who she is :(

I copied and zoomed in, and there is a likeness. But, just a thought, could she be the child on the right?

Sorry, technical difficulties with the photo,(I'm a bit thick ;D)

the group photo taken 1916/17 consists of my grandad b 1886, my grandmother b 1883, my mother (the little girl) b 1914 and her brother the baby b 1916.  my grandmother died 1917

can anyone put an apporximate age to the single photo going by the type of dress?

I'm thinking 1910 -1918, Bee, but best wait for Prue  :)

Hi Gadget, thanks for hollering!  ;D

I'd go with Gadget's date range, probably concentrating on the middle of that period - say around the beginning of the war.

Can't tell who it is though - looking forward to seeing the larger version ofthe other pic!  :D

Hi Prue - so you heard me loud and clear  :D

I've just realised that I've got a family photo taken in 1915 and one of the women is wearing a very similar outfit, so......................

I'm also waiting with baited breath for the enlargement. I do like doing likenesses  :)

Gadget

PS given the date, I wouldn't think that they are the same person.

I think I can close the date down to after 1913, Prue. All the girls in my 1913 Girls Annual have long skirts. Don't know if that helps, but it knocks a couple of years off.

They are so similar - nose, eyes mouth, shape of face. They must be sisters or the same person.

It could be me but I think the lady in the 2nd photo has a slightly rounder face. They are probably sisters

And the hair is possibly lighter - I think it's the younger sister the more I look.

sorry for the delay, I had to surrender use of the pc to the others :( ;D

thanks for all your replies, I'll just have to file it as 'possible grandmother/one of her sisters'.

Gadget, a quick tutorial please on how you managed to get
the 2 faces side by side.

Very quick Bee -

Open both files in your graphics package. Select the part you want from each and make these new files. Check they are roughly same size. If not, resize. Open a new file and paste them both in to that, side by side. . as new file.

Thanks, Gadget and everyone else.

As I have no idea when the single photo was taken other than your estimates based on style of dress. how old do you think the lady is?

Goggy, you're confusing me (very easily done :D), I know the ages of the family in the group photo, it's the age of the lady by herself that I was asking about.

For what its worth I think it is the same person.

As for the parting ...could it just have been a reversal of the negative?

I thought it was the same lady in both pics.  My guess is that the lady in the single pic is age 18/20 or so...but your grandmother would have been 18 in 1901, which is waaaay earlier than this photo was taken.  It is no earlier than about 1910, so if it's your grandmother then she would have been at least 27 in the single pic, and she doesn't look it...although she could have been a very young-looking twenty-something!

Exactly my thoughts Prue when I was cutting and pasting. It just didn't tie in with her date of birth.

But then some people do look young for their age - thank goodness  :D :D :D
