Post by: decco on Friday 08 September 06 13:33 BST (UK)
 :)

Hi

I had offered to do my friends tree to cheer her up (recovering from being hit by a car). I was doing ok all the time her rellies were in Liverpool. The I hit a stump! IRELAND!!!

Would anyone being able to help find me any information on James Mackin born about 1891 (was 23 in  1891 census). The census only said Ireland as a birth place and that he was a fireman.

Any help most appreciated

thanks

Hi Decco,

Corky44 is researching a  Mackin family.  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,123172.msg545294.html#msg545294) You say James was born in 1891 and was 23 at the time of the 1891 Census. He must have been born in 1868.  Griffith's Valuation of Ireland 1848-64  (http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php)shows the Mackin surname in several Irish counties.

There's a chance that James was named after his Grandfather. If one of the Mackins in the Valuation was a relation of James I'd say it would probably be his grandfather or his great grandfather. Most of the guys named James came from Co. Louth. The Valuation there took place in 1864. If you post the christian name of James' descendents that might possibly help as there's not sufficent information to make much progress at the moment.

thanks to everyone who replied to my friends request. I know that on the England census 1871 it lists  the family as follows: John Mackin b around 1840, Mary Mackin b around 1843, Denis Mackin b around 1861 and James Mackin b around 1869, all born in Ireland. I'd be very grateful for any help in tracing my family in Ireland. I'm afraid I don't even know which county they came from.

Hi Mary and welcome to Rootschat,

Do you know what religion they were?

I ask because civil registration of non-RC marriages began about 1845 and so John and Mary might be included.

Hi RonnieG

thanks for the welcome. Not too sure of the religion as although the family have all been brought up as catholic we've recently found out that when James married in Liverpool in 1890 it was in a C of E church and all his children were brought up as C of E although we all thought grandad (his son) was a catholic!. Do you know how I can check those records you mention?.

many thanks, Mary
