Hi Joe :)
I hope you are keeping well...i was up in Ligoniel today and have taken a few photos for you.........hope you don't mind i have posted them here so if others are searching the area of Ligoniel then they have a wee bit to start them off.
There is a place called the Wolfhill Centre which is on the left hand side of the Road heading out to the country....i called in and the staff were very helpful.
I noticed a few old photos of the area on the walls and asked the centre manager if it would be OK to take photographs of them.....he said there was no problem .........i have posted them to give you an idea of what the area was like around the early part of the century
I spoke with the staff for a while and have learnt that there is a book called Memories of Ligoniel which is available for five pounds.....it covers the history of Ligoniel village and has lots of photographs in it.........the centre can be contacted on the following number...........02890 391225 or via their e mail address which is ...........wolfehill@freeuk.com
The first two photos are of St Vincent De Paul as requested.
hope you enjoy the photos
best wishes
pentio.

-
next two a photo of flax workers at the begining of the century and one of Emersons Mill

the first one is of Wolfhill Mill
the second one is a group of Mill workers taken in 1937 who worked for the Wolfhill Spinning Mill Co.......... i think it is a lovely photograph

-
Joe :) :)
last three photos.........the first is a group of flax workers
second a view of the old Ligoniel village
and last but not least a photo of The Mountainview football team taken in 1921
I hope this has given you some insight into the Village of Ligoniel past and present.......i do hope you enjoy the photos and maybe this will help others who have an interest in the area.
one thing i nearly forgot to mention......re Emerson Mill ......the owner was a John Emerson and he lived in the Glenbank estate which was also on the Ligoniel Road.
if you like we could rename this thread........ photos of Ligoniel past and present or simply Ligoniel so others who have an interest in the area can have a look........let me know what you think...
speak to you soon
best wishes

Chris
-
Pentio you have been such a busy boy!!
I am just wondering what job you do and does your firm/company have any vacancies in my part of the world!!??!! ;D ;D ;D
I have said it before and I will say it again - sarcasm is the lowest form of wit - and I should know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sooooooooo jealous!!! ;D ;D ;D
I think I am just feeling Kn***erd today as we are in process of moving - took ages (or seemed to) getting to this stage and wish I hadn't bothered now I see the amount of work needed!!!!!
Keep up the good work / ignore me - I am bitter and twisted / and dont forget The Botanic Gardens if you get half a chance!! ;D ;D
Speak soon
saz XX :-*
-
Hi Saz :) :)
yes i have been rather busy lately........what sort of job do i have....one with lots of time off lol (i wish) ;D ;D had some flexy time built up and am putting it to good use.
to cut a long story short my sis who got me into all this family research stuff was home last year and we spent some time in Dromore looking for our Graham family connections...........during our time there we met a local man and after talking to him he kindly agreed to do some research on our behalf.......seemed to know all the right places to search.
he found lots of info on our family mostly in the Belfast area.... as you can imagine we were so thrilled that a complete strange gave his time so freely that i decided it would be nice to give a little back......so when i see others especially those who live outside Northern Ireland needing some help i decided to do my best to help out........sometimes i bite off more than i can chew but get there in the end.........i love a challenge.....phew hope that explains it.
moving house one of the most stressful things you can do in your life......but hey you'll get there in the end and it will be worth it......... chill out for a while with a couple of gin and tonic's.
ignore you i wouldn't dream of it ........love your humour ;D ;D ;D even though you are bitter and twisted ;D ;D ;D ;D only joking honest
I was on the way to Botanic Gardens last Monday after the trip to Ligoniel when the heavens opened.....didn't have a coat or brolly with me...when i left home the weather was beautiful.........as its a lovely day today i am going to Botanic Gardens complete with camera to have a look for the fountain......will let you know asap.
and finally if you or Steve need any pics taken don't hesitate to ask
best wishes
pentio. :) :)
-
Hi Pentio
Sorry I havn't got back to you before - many thanks for the Botanic Gardens visit for us - it was really kind of you to do that.
I know what you mean about the downpours - we have been having them here too in the last few weeks.
It has always amazed me how kind family tree researchers are. We had a lady went to Belfast from Antrim for us a few years ago and did lots of look ups and I have only recently realised she must have paid to get the information and I didn't even ask or offer to pay!!!
I am such a Grumpy Old Woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you are all well ;D
I will get back to packing up ready for our house move - think I'll scrape the paint out of my hair first though!!!!!!!!!! ;D
-
Hi Saz :)
happy to help its a pity i couldn't find anything for you. :(
Family researchers are a helpful friendly lot after all we are searching for the same thing our elusive ancestors...........we are still looking for our gggrandparents the Grahams in Belfast.......the strange thing is we have found all their children on the 1901 census but the mother and father seem to have disappeared. ??? ???
My big sis is coming home in November and we have a busy week planned
I am sure you are not a grumpy old woman.......... maybe grumpy yes old no or is it old yes grumpy no lol ;D ;D ;D............. i think its neither.
Good luck with the house move ......and don't forget to scrape that paint out of your hair ;D ;D
best wishes
pentio.

Pentio
Thank you for looking and thank you Saz for thanking Pentio for me....as I have been in bed with the flu....... :'(......up and bit better now....so back to the rellies hunt ;D

Hi Pentio
I remember going to zoo as a child (not that long ago!) and remember a lovely warm part, close to the heffalumps, which I think was refered to as the botanic gardens.
I also feel sure I have a photo of it somewhere - probably packed away with the rest!!!!!
Thanks for all your help
saz ;D
-
Saz :)
I will have a look around the zoo to see if i can find anything for you......speak to you soon.
pentio

Hi Pentio
Grumpy old woman is back (briefly as I dont move til Tuesday!)
I am getting grumpier I am afraid! Electrician has floor boards up, husband and me painting - very slowly due to his bad back and my trapped nerve in shoulder, carpet appears delivery delayed and work is a pain in the a**e!!!! Apart from that I am in a great mood!!!
Don't get too caught up in our search ie zoo cos I know the weather there (and here) is awful at the moment - wait till New Year when spring is on way and weather starts to improve!!
Hope you and family are well
saz (GOW) ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Hi Saz :)
have the afternoon off work and as its a lovely day i am heading off to the Zoo to see if i can find this elusive water fountain..... new year.....couldn't let you wait that long...........as you say the weather has been awful ..........will let you know tonight if i find anything............re working in the house painting etc can be a right pain but all the hard work and effort will be worth it in the end.
family are all well
pentio. ;D ;D
-
Hi Saz....Steve :)
I went to the Zoo this afternoon and could not find any water fountain.......there are no gardens in the complex similar to Botanic in Belfast.
I spoke to a member of staff who informed me that she didn't know of any water fountains in the zoo complex.
She gave me a telephone number for the Parks Dept in Belfast ..........i called them and a lady who works there told me she knew there was a water fountain in Dunville Park which is on the Grosvenor Road opposite the Royal Victoria Hospital........other than that she couldn't give me any other details.
The lady gave me a number for one of the park rangers who works there......will give him a call tomorrow and see what he knows about it.........i know its a long shot but its worth a call.......
sorry Ive drawn another blank :( but if you can think of anything else re this fountain please let me know.........it's out there somewhere and i would love to find it for you.
speak to you soon
best wishes
pentio. :)
-
Pentio ;D
You star you...thank you's are never going to be enough
Had an hour or two chit chatting with me Da and he says it was a drinking fountain......and had a placket on it saying it had been donated by Annie McDowell.....and he remmembers it being on the Omoer Road side of the gardens......the river side by Queens.
He always talked about this before he became unwell......so not really sure if he is remmembering more details now.......he has been dead on recently...surprizingly ;D
steve
-
Steve :)
Thats great news we now have something concrete.........i will go over at the weekend and have a good hunt for it.........will take my camera and get a few pics for you should i find it............good old dad .........i knew something would turn up.............glad to hear he is keeping better...........
talk to you on Sunday.....keep you fingers crossed :)
pentio. ;D ;D
-
Steve...Saz :)
Hope you are both well.......i had this afternoon off and as it was a lovely day i decided to go along to Botanic Gardens to have a look for the elusive water fountain..
I went in via the Queens entrance at the river side and had a brief look before i met one of the Gardiners who had worked there for about 16 years.
I told him what i was looking for and he said i would be better speaking to the manager of the Gardens a chap called Reg Maxwell who had worked there for quite a considerable time and that he knew the history of the place better than anyone.
I went to his office which is on the Malone side and he invited me in......after telling him what i was after he told me that a number of years ago there were 3 water fountains in the Gardens and that there was one at the river side near the Queens entrance.........but this is the bad news :( he informed me that around 1978/79 all the water fountains had to be removed from the gardens due to vandalism which was a big problem at that time.
Well at least we know there was a water fountain in the place where your dad said it was.......... just a pity its no longer there.
As i was leaving his office he kindly offered me a book on the history of Botanic Gardens and said that maybe you or your dad would like to have it to make up for your disappointment........if you would like it pm me and i will arrange to have it sent to you.
I find it really sad and so annoying that these mindless idiots just can't leave things alone......
Just to cheer you up i took a few photos of the Rose gardens which i have posted .......they are still in bloom and are really lovely hope you enjoy them.......... the head gardiner said the roses are at their best during June and July.
sorry there wasn't a happy end to this but at least we know it was there at one time.
best wishes and send my regards to your dad.
pentio. :) :)
-
Steve...Saz :)

Hello Pentio
If your offer is still standing on taking requests for photos, and if possible, photos of cemeteries/crematoriums entrances around the Belfast area. Hopefully one day I will able to use the photos (with your consent) in my family history research. Also any photos of Belfast city buildings and Sailortown/Dockyards which you think would be of interest to people living overseas for family history purposes.
Kanga
-
Kanga
let me know what buildings...cemeteries you would like photos of and i will be happy to oblige.....i know sailortown in the docks area it has changed quite a bit over the years but I'm sure there are places of interest still in the area......one fine example is the Sinclair Seamans church....my own parents were married there in 1948......
speak to you soon.

Will send you a PM.

-
Hi Steve & Saz. Can you tell me a bit more on Annie McDowell please.
Came across these,
Manuscipt Sources.
Mintue Books of the Royal Belfast Botanical & Horticultural Company Ltd 1860 to 1894 in the Belfast Library.
Papers Relating to the Gardens in the City Hall also a list of Shareholders & Subscribers in 1891 in the Linenhall Library.
Two of the Fountains where in Belfast City Centre at one time & then moved to the Gardens.
One for Mr Jaffe & one for a Mr Kyle?.
Hope these are of some help to you.
Anthony
-
Hi Anthony
hope you are well I was informed by the manager of Botanic Gardens that one of the fountains is to be relocated back to the Ann Street area when the new Victoria centre is completed.
pentio.
-
Hi Pentio. Yes the one for Mr Kyle? not to sure about the name was in Victoria Square in the 1800s.
Anthony
-
Anthony
I think it will be good to see the fountain back in it's original place.
pentio.
-
Hi old friends from another thread - Pentio, Saz and Steve ;D ;D
I have been following this with great interest and have enjoyed all the pictures...........
-
Hi Emmeline :)
I thought i would put my camera to good use especially for those Rootschatters who live outside Northern Ireland and would like to see a few photos of the old place......is there anywhere you would like a photo or two of ....if so please feel free to ask
I have had plenty of help from others when i first started to search for my ancestors so i thought it would be nice to give a little back.
pentio :)
-
Anthony
please remind me what Street directories do you have...
pentio.
-
To be sure that's a very nice offer you have made Pentio - thank you. :)
I must eventually get around to searching out my links to Ireland.
Three times Gt.Grandma Mary Joyce was born in Tipperary in 1800 and died in London 1887.
Other than that the places I have linked also with my mother's side of the family are :-
Cappawhite - Co. Tipperary.
Pallaskenry.
Rosscarbery. Co. Cork.
One of my mother's aunts married well and I have found all the information on her children and grandchildren in Burkes Peerage ::) However, I have for instance hesitated to write to one of her grandchildren whom it appears is a nun and if still alive would be 63 years of age. Would it be acceptable to write to a nun based at the Convent of Mercy or not - wouldn't want to go about things the wrong way..........
Thanks for any information - otherwise I shall have to resort to Google ::)
Lots of Kiwis visit Ireland on their travels - I listen to all they have to say.
Bye for now...
-
Hi Emmeline. I had a Gentleman from N-Z over in Belfast this year, before he came over i done some research for him.
I picked him up at the Airport took him to Belfast, we went to the graveyard where his ancestries are buried.
We then went to the town where his ancestries came from i took him to their old house & to the old mill they owned in 1775.
I have some great photos of him at the graveyard & the old mill, i can tell you now he went home to N-Z a very happy man.
I think what Pentio is doing is a great thing, so Pentio keep up the good work for rootschats members.
Anthony
-
Hello Anthony - Thanks for telling me about your visiting Kiwi.
I can imagine how thrilled and delighted he was to be taken to where his ancestors were buried and then to see the old house and mill.
No doubt he is showing off those photos and telling the story to all who will listen even now - I know I would be full of smiles. :) :)
It's great how we are all able to help each other on Rootschat and I know Pentio is finding pleasure in helping others with his photos.
Wishing you good luck with your own research :)
-
Hi everyone.
Steve & Saz I have been asking about for info on this Fountain, had some good leads but no luck yet, sorry.
I telephoned the Ulster folk museum, thats where B C C would send anything like the fountains, but no luck :(.
The only thing i got was a look at, was the Shareholders & Subscribers list for 1891.
Subscribers
A, Mc Dowell Dunallen.
J, Mc Dowell Landscape Terrace Belfast
Shareholders
Rev, S, B Stevenson Fitzroy Ave.
Will keep looking for anymore info on the fountain.

Well done on helping out the chap from New Zealand. I'm sure he is a very happy man :)
Photography is a big hobby of mine and I'm delighted to be able to help others with any requests they may have
As you are probably aware i am researching my St Helena family connections...my ggg..grandparents are buried on the island in St Pauls church........my brother in law who lives in England wrote to the local school on the island and asked the Head Master if he could assist us in our search......he was very happy to help
The children from the school are now searching the church graveyard to see if they can find the grave and will take a few photos if and when they find it 8) 8)
we are thrilled that they are so willing to help us.
Christopher
Thank you for the list of Street directories much appreciated.
pentio. :)

Hi Pentio. Photography is also a great hobby of mine as well.
I was a member of a Camera club also a member of Belfast Expose that was on the Falls Rd many years ago.
Sold some for my photos to the Bank of Ireland also had a large dark room in our old house, its a great hobby.
I was out on Monday night taking some photos with my new camera, its not bad well pleased with it.
Its great that the children are helping you :) hope they get something for you.
If you need a helping hand at anytime just ask, it will be my pleasure to help out.
Anthony
-
Hi pentio - What a great picture that conjures up - the school children in the grave-yard at St.Helena - seeking out your ancestors.........
Will hope to see more on this thread if they are successful.
-
Anthony
I was just thinking what a pity we didn't have the resources the children have today digital cameras and PC's etc.......looking back to the 60's i could have done so much with a digital camera.
Taking photos of the old streets and characters of Belfast would have made a wonderful book.
Thanks for your kind offer :)
Emmeline
I am eagerly awaiting news from the school children in St Helena....lets hope they are successful.
I will keep you posted should they find the grave.

Hi Pentio,
My family are from Doagh, is there any chance you can travel up that way? My Grandfather had a shoe shop in Main Street, is it still there though. The children went to the local school and attended the Methodist Church. Any photos of Doagh would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Pentio
Is Armoy any where near where you go in your travels?
I think my grandad is buried in the Armoy Parish but I'm not sure how many cemeteries are there. If there is only one or two cemeteries is it possible of a photo of his grave or just the transcription on the stone if he has one. His name is John Forsythe died 1951. I do have an ID on hime from a website but unfortunately it doesn't give the church yard.
Sorry big order from downunder!
Many Thanks

All information about any members of the Jaffe family would be gratefully received. I'm helping a descendent of Martin Jaffe's wife Kate (nee Samuel) who lives in New Zealand piece together the story of the Jaffe family in Ireland. Relatives of my New Zealand contact are working on the German end of the Jaffe story.
