Title: William and Margaret DAVIS, Lurgan
Post by: mandmsports on Thursday 26 October 06 14:11 BST (UK)
I am looking for marriage date and children for William DAVIS, born about 1775 and Margaret BAILEY, born 1788. Both are from Lurgan, Co. Armagh. I know that they had, at least, one son, Thomas Andrew Davis, born c1843, married Bridget McAravey c1862, Ireland).
I believe that William died in Ireland but Margaret immigrated to Canada, through the US.
Thank you, in advance.

Mike, in Canada

Hello Mike,

You'll have to rely on Church records as your ancestors were born before Civil Registration was introduced in Ireland. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Christopher,

Thank you for that. I do know that a lot of churches and their contents burned, years ago. I have come across many dead ends, due to this very fact. I will see what I can find and keep my fingers crossed.

Mary,

Thomas Andrew Davis and Bridget McAraevt were my great great grandparent. They evenually settled here, in Canada about 1870 or 71. I did not have their marraige dates but suspected that they married, either in Ireland or Birkenhead, England, as their oldest son, William, was born in Birkenhead.
Thank you for the info.

Hi Mary,

They are mine, for sure but I have Joseph born in St Catharines, Ontario, Canada on 6 May, 1876 and Martha Jane, born in Lurgan on 7 March, 1870. I got Joseph's info from an Ontario census of 1901. I realize that those records are not always correct but there is a differance of 8 years on Joseph's birth date. Thank you, again.

It is quite possible that the birth for a Joseph in 1868 was that of a child that then died and the birth you have in Canada, 8 years later, is for a following birth to the same couple where the child was given his previous sibling's name (not uncommon a happening).

Scotmum,

Interesting concept. I have seen that in another one of my lines. I will investigate that further. Thank you.

I do know of several children, a couple of which came to Canada. who were born to William Davis and Margaret Bailey. Thomas Andrew, Joseph and and John all came to Canada. There were allegedly others, who immigrated to Edinborough. Margaret (Bailey) Davis first left Ireland for Scotland before coming to Canada to join the other sons.
