Hello,
I wonder if someone can help me please. I am trying to reseearch the Heaths who originated (to the best of my knowlelge) in Staffordshire.
Samuel Heath was born in 1831 in Cheddleton, one of 5 known children. I have been through the censuses & cant decide if his father was George or William, as it seems a bit confusing. In the 1851 census printed image he was described as a servant, but on viewing the original, I think that was a mistake as it appears to read "son" there. Can someone please help by deciphering the information & also tell me what information is available for his parents. I would also appreciate any information on his wife. According to my information, her first name was Sarah & she was born about 1832 in Merebrook, Staffs.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi mrsd
To start this off, the 1851 Samuel HEATH listed in the household of William HEATH is definitely described as a Ser(vant) age 19, as are the 2 supposed HEATH's after him, Isaac 17 and Hannah 14. Before Samuel, Issac & Hannah, is listed the family of farmer William HEATH and wife & 2 small children.
HO107- Piece2008-Folio564-Pg3 in Heaton Staffs.
Head: William HEATH 55, b Cheddleton
Wife: Mary HEATH 55, b b Cheddleton
Dau: Hannah HEATH 2, b Heaton,
Son: William HEATH 9 months, Heaton.
Ser: Samuel HEATH 19, Farm Lab,
Ser: William HEATH 17, Farm Lab
Ser: Hannah HEATH 14, House Ser
All listed as HEATH (dittoed after William snr).
If Mary is 55, she surely cannot be the birth mother of the 2 little children.
The 2 littlies are listed after the elders, and all before the 3 teenage servants.
The abbreviated word "Ser" is quite clearly different from "son", and Hannah a female is listed as "Ser" in her relationship, and also in her occupation.
I take it you do not have Samuel's marriage, which should give his father's name...you say he is one of 5 known sibs - who are the other 4?
Cheers

1861 census RG9 1951 folio 9
Cats Wall Cheddleton Staffordshire
Samuel Heath 29 Cheddleton, Staffordshire, Head Married Farmer
Sarah Heath 29 Leek, Staffordshire, Wife Married
Mary Heath 6 Cheddleton, Staffordshire, Daughter
Sarah A Heath 5 Cheddleton, Staffordshire, Daughter
Samuel Heath 9mths Cheddleton, Staffordshire, Son
Mary Heath 76 Kingsley, Staffordshire, Mother Widow Formerly farmer's wife
The family were in Wales in 1871 (Samuel and Sarah just gave Staffordshire as their birthplace) and back in Staffordshire in 1881 where Sarah gave her birthplace as Merebrook.
1841 census HO107 1003/12 folio 5 page 2
Brookhouse Cheddleton Staffordshire
George Heath 48 Staffordshire farmer
Mary Heath 50 Staffordshire
William Heath 20 Staffordshire Male Servant
Elijah Heath 11 Staffordshire
Samuel Heath 9 Staffordshire
Isaac Heath 6 Staffordshire
Mary was a widow on the 1851 census in Cheadle in the household of her son George aged 30 a publican and farmer born Cheddleton.
Not sure what the issue is, if you have been through all the censuses, since they seem quite conclusive about the age of Samuel's mother and her birthplace? Did Samuel not have an older brother called George born circa 1821 in Cheddleton?
Regards
Valda
