Title: Spratt - ? Edy.
Post by: mazeppa on Tuesday 05 December 06 23:15 GMT (UK)
I need some help please working out this name, Edy.

Spratt   Joseph and Martha, nee Wraight.
1881 he was a blacksmith living at Station Rd Walmer [ 57]
I think I have found 9 children, the puzzle is Edy. b c1875  at
Ringwould,  mother would have been about 51. I know census ages can't always be relied on. I might have more luck if I knew what Edy. was an abbr. of.

Thanks, Mazeppa

Hi Mazeppa,

I've found a birth registration for:

Edith Matilda Spratt  Sep 1875  Dover 2a   it's either 805 or 865.

If the child is female this could be the one or perhaps it's short for Edward?

Thanks for such a fast response Nanny Jan,  I replied on the spot but lost it - probably fell asleep with my fingers on the keys.

I think that is certainly the right one, I also have her on the Family Search 1881 census. It's the age of the mother that is making me think something doesn't seem quite right.

Don't really know why I'm getting bothered by her as I come down from one of her five older sisters.

Regards, Mazeppa

Hi
Could young Edy belong to one of the older sisters perhaps? My g grandmother is listed as daughter of her grandmother - in her case she would have been in her 60's when she gave birth :o
Jan ;)

You could check by getting a copy of Edith's birth cert, or perhaps a copy of the Joseph Spratt/Martha Wraight marriage cert but even ages on marriage certs are not always accurate!

Not sure when I will be in Deal next (just got back!) but the Ringwould registers are on film in the library, so I will have a look for the baptism when I have time.

I would agree with Jan that she may well belong to an older sister, and the baptism will probably reflect the fact if they were living there, as the vicar would almost certainly have known the family.

Thank you all for all your help.

I'm thinking the g/mother idea is the most likely, I'll work on that now, and hope Bill 749 finds something in the registers for me.

Cheers to all you lovely people who find time to help others.
