hello there
do you have any details for the 1871 census
thanks for these I do apreciate it
regards jenn

The family listed at 1 mid Row Hawick would appear to be the children of a John and Margaret Bell as they can be traced on the 1871.
I've checked a few entries on Scotland's People without any success either in 1871 or 1891.

In the 1871 William Smith is unmarried and living with his parents (John Smith is also a Master baker)

There is a 4 yr old James Riddell listed in the 1871 but he is listed as the son of the head of the household John Riddell and his wife Agnes .... they have a 28 yr old unmarried daughter Ann Riddell ..... the places of birth appear to match those given in the 1881 census transcripts.
I wonder if it is possible that James was illegitimate and the son of the 28 yr old Ann and on her subsequent marriage to Mr Smith, the Baker, her son went with her ?

Hi Jenn
Have you looked at the civil registers on the IGI. There is a marriage for Ann Riddle
ANN RIDDLE M WILLIAM SMITH Marriage: 07 DEC 1875 Ancrum, Roxburgh
but I can't find an appropriate birth for James - with mother Ann or with parents John and Agnes. He should be there somewhere?
