Can anyone work out what the surname of Joseph Bauer's wife is please? I am really struggling to do so. ....dee :-\ :-\ :-\
-
It looks like Donnella !! is there such a name :-\
-
Isabella ... LEOFFARD?
That can't be right...let me have another look!
Prue
-
Dee, what was the date of the marriage, and whereabouts?
-
Looks like Isabella Leoppard?? :-\
Karen
-
Prue and Karen - I have come up with both of those surnames. ;D
Oonagh - Her given name was Isabella - it is her surname that is so hard to decipher.
Prue - it is from a Victorian marriage certificate for my gg - grandfather Francois Bauer - it was his second marriage ; the first having been in Lambeth, England.
However, Joseph Bauer, his father - was on the Census as being from France, and his son Francois Bauer dressed as a French Count to greet the guests who stayed at his Isle of Wight Hotel on Philip Island. So I am of the belief that Isabella may well have been French.......dee :-\
-
sorry Dee, I can see it now I have my specs on ;D ;D
-
Dee,
would it be Leopold
-
Could well be Oonagh - shall add it to my list. :)
Forgot to mention date of marriage Prue - it was 3rd Oct 1887 - but Francois was born back in 1827/28 and his mother Isabella died before 1841.......dee
-
Dee,
there is a marriage 1858 Johan Bauer to Isabella Mariaranier Leffen Whitechapel 1c 603 are these your couple??
-
Oh sugar ,just read your post on Isabella dying before 1841 :-[ What about "Leffen" then.... :-X
-
I have tried those two middle letters as gg/ff/pp/ss/jj/ but nothing seems to work when I search other places using the resultant name, Oonagh - it really has me beat...... dee ::)
-
Dee,
what a conundrum,and I thought I'd cracked it,sorry :-\
-
Hi Dee,
Have you tried LEOPPACO ?
Jayne
-
Or LEOPPOCO?
-
No Jayne - that's something different - on the list they go. Thanks! ........dee :D
-
How about "LEOZZARD" - the nearest name to that that I can think of is "GOZZARD" or "GAZZARD".
Prue
-
Another added to my list, thanks Prue. I have been concentrating on names that look French as I suspect that Isabella was French. Joseph, her husband, was born in France according to the 1841 and 1851 Censuses, as well as family oral history. The nearest French name I have found so far is Lecossois - but I can't see that in the name on the certificate.........dee
-
What about Laozzord, Laozzard, Laoppord or Laofford?
yn9man
-
Thanks for your suggestions, yn9man. I shall try those in a few places. .....dee
-
Hi Dee
Won't a death certificate give her maiden name?
Sandy
-
Hi again Dee
How about this web link if you have not tried it.

Sandy

It looks like a d at the end of the name to me, see that little tail coming up from the circle. So something like Leo**ard.
Mary
-
Isabella died before Registration came in, unfortunately Sandy, and of course I don't know where.
Thanks for the website - I shall try that.
Will be in contact sometime - update you on things here........dee

Will be in contact sometime - update you on things here........dee
Look foward to that Dee.
Keep hunting.
Sandy

And I am sure it is an L at the beginning, Mary.......dee
-
Hi Dee :D :D :D
Just found this thread - Certainly Isabella and I think it's Leoppard, Leozzard or Leazzard.
I've known a few Lezzards, so could be a misspelling :-\
Gadget
-
Thanks Gadget -I am trying out all the names in various places - sooner or later I might strike gold! ......dee :) :) :)
-
Léopard is a French name fwiw...the double p could be a variation or misspelling...
Cheers,
China
-
China, thanks for your suggestion - as I really suspect she was French, a variation in spelling on an Aussie certificate would be quite likely!

Could it be Leonard? Maybe that's an 'n' in the middle and we are being confused by a riser from the row beneath.

I don't think it's a "p" because the "p" in Joseph is very different. Nonetheless it could still be.
I don't think it's Leopold because I have culled detailed listings of Leopolds over the last couple of years, and have never found such a person yet. In fact there are no Isabella bmds at all in England, as far as I know, except for a Marie Isabella LEOPOLD, who was born in 1925 and died in London in 1989 - probably her married name.
I have also spent untold bleary-eyed hours examining original listings with names that look like Leopold. My best guess is that it's LEOFFORD, LEOFFARD, or LEOPPARD. I'm pretty sure I've seen LEOFFOLD come up here and there, and LEOPARD is common. A lot of people with similar names seem to have come from France, if they didn't come from Germany, including the LEOPOLDs who settled in Wales. It's not unusual to find a name or spelling that only occurs once, when looking through these listings.
Sorry I can't be any more help.
-
At first glance, I thought it might be something like Leggard. On second glance, I'm doubting it, but you never know.
-
Spent a few more minutes looking ... looks more and more like Leozzard, Leazzard, or Leozzord.

It's fascinating seeing my list of possible names growing - and I am investigating them as far as I am able. If Isabella was from France, that is going to make the task even more difficult.
I really appreciate all the responses.
