Title: COLLIER - Census look up please..
Post by: aitch on Wednesday 31 January 07 12:47 GMT (UK)
Is there SKS who could please look up a George COLLIER born 1818/1819 in Cheadle?
Ideally I'd like to find him in the 1851 and 1861...
I've found reference to him on the 1851 Index as being in Cheadle - Alton in 1851 if that helps any...
Many thanks  :)

Thanks very much for this Geoff..well at least it confirms my suspicions that he was Catholic if he was playing the organ in a Catholic church!
I was vainly hoping he'd still be at home with his parents so I could tie him in with the next generation.

Thanks again for your speedy help.  It really is much appreciated.

Oooo... now it could well be!
Thanks very much for this Jim...  Rootschatters are wonderful at looking up things above and beyond the original request!
Luckily I have some early Parish Registers for Alton, so I might be able to check this couple out.

I can't figure why George isn't showing up on the 1861.  He's on the 1881 in Alton aged 62 and a widower but he's giving his birthplace as Cheadle, which is a bit at odds with him giving Alton in 1851.

Maybe he's disappeared down the black hole along with all those other missing ancestors of mine!

Many thanks again for your helpful lookup :)
kind regards

An interesting looking bunch...and what's more there's a marriage on Staffs BMD of a William Collier to an Elizabeth Rushton ... Rushton is another one of my ancestral families....

Looks like I might be heading into one of those genealogical loops again!!

Thanks for your help again Jim.  It is sincerely appreciated.

kind regards
Aitch :)

I saw that marriage but I think 1800 is a bit early for this couple.I like this one:
William Collier=Elizabeth Stenton/6/11/1809/Burton-on-Trent(abt.10 mls. from Alton)

Thanks Jim & yonderpeasant.

The thick plottens...

The 1881 Census has him a 62 year old widower with children aged 16,13 & 11, so if it's the same man, then it seems I might be looking at two marriages...

I'm slowly scrolling through the 1871 Cheadle disk to see if he's going to show up on there...

thanks very much both of you...

Found these:
Marr. to Ann James Sept.1851/Cheadle
Death of Ann Collier/1860/Cheadle.

also this birth:Thomas/29/9/1810/Fa.William/Ma.Elizabeth/Burton-on-Trent
There are 2 other William & Elizabeth's having children in Burton-on-Trent from abt.1780-early 1800's but I think this is the first child of William Collier & Elizabeth Stenson.
Both Burton-on-Trent & Cheadle are well served by the Collier family so I can see William marrying in one and living in the other.
Hope this helps.
Jim

Thanks Jim - I was nearly there! ;D
It seems that he might then have married Ann James and then after she died he married a young Annie...

Thanks for helping me begin to piece this lot together!
kind regards

I think you need to get some BMD certs. to confirm what you have.Marr.to Ann James 1851 & death of Ann Collier 1860.I can't see a marriage to young Annie but I've only looked on free BMD.
Good luck.
Jim

Yes, there's a fair bit of clarification needed to be sure of getting these connections right, but you've been a great help getting the possible bare bones of this family sorted.

thanks again
