Would anyone be able to help me please?
I would like to know if James Sherrard and his wife Eliza Jane Sherrard, along with their children, were living in Mossley during the time of the 1901 and 1911 Census in Ireland. Mossley is in the Parish of Carnmoney, East Antrim, Co.Antrim. I tried in PRONI but it gave Carnmoney as missing in the 1901 census and they don't have the 1911 one. If you could tell me from the list of names in the "House and Building Returns" if they lived in Mossley, that would be really helpful, then I could send away to the National Archives in Dublin for a copy.
Thank you so much,
Brian.

Hi Anthony,
That was quick, thank you so much for your help in finding James Sherrard in the 1911 Census.
Best wishes,
Brian.

I had the same problem for Mossley - 1901 - Kingsbog area - it should actually be there in PRONI now - they ordered another copy - I think it may have been tacked on the end of the roll - you think you are at the end but if you go on further magically it appears! I have a list of heads of household somewhere - I need a bit of time to hunt it out. I ordered 1911 census of the area but I think I was only getting the fringes of Mossley. You might also find the Mossley National School Books interesting - I found my Palmer family there.

Hi Fiona,
Thanks very much for that. I will go to PRONI and try again. I am also after info on the Blain's and Martin's from Kingsbog, so hopefully will find that out from PRONI as well. Are the Mossley National School Books kept in PRONI?
Many thanks again for your help.
Brian.

Yes they are in PRONI indeed. I think the Martin Family rings a bell - can't put my hands on the info yet!
-
Thanks for that Fiona. My Great-Grandmother was Phebe Martin from Kingsbog (Kingsmoss) and she married John Blain also from Kingsbog. I don't know any further back than that, except My Great-Grandfather John Blain's mother was called Agnes (as far as I can tell).

Welcome to roots Volvic
I too have Sherrards but as yet can not find any information to help you at present.
Will get back to you "poste haste" if I find anything that might help

I found some of my notes - 1911 Census Mossley: James and Eliza Jane Sherard - I didn't record the children - Clements another surname mentioned in the house. Married 24 years 10 Children Born 6 Alive. Here are the list of households either side [I may have a little more info on these if anyone os interested]:
Margaret and Margaret Jane Muldoon
Michael and Mary MCCromick
Thomas George and Emily Stevenson
William And Margaret Hamill
James and Eliza Jane Sherard
Eliza Margaret Montgomery
Thomas and May Jane Hale
Joseph and Mary MCCormack
Michael and Rose Crossan
William and Agens McKinnon
Thoams James and Ellen Hamill
Francis McDonnell/Devlin
I think this might be in the Balyhenry section of Mossley in the 1911 census
It may have been close to the Cairns/Kearns family - do you know about any of the families in this area especially them?

Thanks Steve,
Any help really appreciated.
Thank you for this Fiona,
It was really good of you to look for these for me. I don't know any of the names on either side of the Sherrard's, sorry. I knew about 7 children but you tell me there were 3 more. I went to PRONI today but still had no luck with the 1901 census, I got to Mossley but it was only part of it, don't know where the other part went. The girl there told me they were not buying any more missing bits as they were putting the census on the internet. I had success with the School Records though, thanks for telling me about them. I found my Grandmother, Agnes Sherrard and two of her sisters, Lizzie and Louisa, and also a brother John. It seems they lived in Carntall in 1903. Carntall is just outside Mossley, in the parish of Ballylinney. Perhaps they were there during the 1901 census. The school records also told me what had thought, that these 4 children, at least, were born in Scotland.
Many thanks again for all your help.

Hi Brian.
Check out the Carnmoney Presbyterian baptism postings, (3 No), I put on, there are Sherrards on them. Have more to post when I sort them out.

Hi Dixie,
I am very sorry for not responding to your message sooner but I have been out of commission for a while. Thank you very much for your help.
I have tried, on two occasions, to get the 1911 census for James Sherrard's family from the National Archive in Dublin, but both times failed. Could anyone tell me which section of Mossley they lived in.
Thanks very much and sorry again Dixie.

Check the PRONI Ulster Covenant web-site, a lot of Sherrards on it in the Carnmoney district.

Hi Dixie,
Thanks again for your help with this, I had found my Sherrard's in the Ulster Covenant. My Grandmother and her three sisters were still living in Mossley (working in the mill) at the time of the Covenant, while her mother and father had moved to Kilwaughter, a short time before (sometime between the 1911 Census and the signing of the Covenant in 1912).

Hi Brian.
There are eight burials for Sherrard listed in Mallusk Cemetery. If you require headstone details let me know.

Thanks Dixie,
A friend lent me the book about Mallusk Cemetery a little while ago so I was able to get them from that.
Many thanks anyway,
Brian.

Hi Anthony,
Could I ask where you got the info you gave me for James Sherrard. I have tried twice to get the Census for Mossley (apparently Mossley is divided into two parts in the Census) from the National Archive in Dublin, but they just send me back the list of residents in the 'House And Buildings Return' and of course they are not in that that part of Mossley. I don't know what to put on the form. Could you give me any help please as I am at a bit of a dead end with it.
Brian.
