Betty

Hi Betty,
Would it be possible for you give us the census details for Frederick please?
Kind regards,
Pels

Could it be '..........and Beer Retailer'?
I'll spend a bit more time on the even more indecipherable part!

I agree, the last bit is definitely beer retailer, I think!
The first bit at the moment is indecipherable!

I'm clutching at straws here, I think, but on the basis that my suggestion '....and Beer Retailer' is correct, could the first word be 'Vintner'?
I'll work on the second word now.....

The census details -
It's Frederick Forster age 32 living in Wittersham, Kent
1871 census Class: RG10; Piece: 953; Folio: 116; Page: 2;
Many thanks
Betty
In 1888, on his daughter's marriage cert, he is described as 'licensed Victualer' that is if it's the same person.

.....should have added 'Vintner' - as in 'Wine-seller'.

Could the first word be Painter or Printer ? The last word 'Detailer' ?
-
Thanks Betty,
Could it be Painter, Glazier and Beer retailer? ???
Odd combination I know?
-
I'd agree with Pels.
The address is Queens Head - sounds like a pub.
Perhaps he did the Painting and Glaziering as a part time day job and got the Mrs to run the pub when he wasn't there.
-
Looks like Painter Glazier and Beer Retailer to me too.
I think publicans often had another job and much of the beer selling would be done by their wife. I have a Cattle dealer and publican and a baker and innkeeper - although the latter doesn't seem quite such a strange combination.
Jan ;)

Can't read the Painter, but I certainly agree with Glazier. Well done Pels, I went cross eyed trying to decipher it!
Jan I have a farmer and beer house keeper too so it's obviously true.
Kerry ;D

Kerry ;D
My baker/innkeeper went on to become a farmer, which always seemed an odd change of direction but maybe there is some affinity I've not thought of :D

I assume because mine lived in the pub with family that he must have rented land from a local farmer which he farmed and as you say his wife must have run the pub. In fact one of the daughters, in one of the census is described as barmaid so it must have been a family business.

What an odd combination, painting, glazing & keeping a pub ;D
I think I've found the right family, so thanks to everyone for looking.
It was making me cross-eyed!
