Title: St Matthews, Bethnal Green marriage
Post by: Jono on Wednesday 14 February 07 00:38 GMT (UK)
Looking for marriage of Alfred Giles and Susannah Vandome (Vandame).

Child Amelia b 8/7/1839 so marriage would be up to a few years before that. Not on freeBMD so maybe before 1837

Can anyone find them in the 1841 census at 22 Nelson Street bethnal green - address from Amelia's birth cert.

thanks

Jono

THEY MARRIED:

04 FEB 1827   Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green, London, England

The record is on IGI - and sadly only shows one christening for Amelia 18 Aug 1839 at St Matthews...it says she was 1yo when christened by the way!

Looking at Free BMD, they may have had a son Alfred b 1843

I presume Amelia married Daniel FARRELL in 1859?

Susannah may have died in the 1850's - there are a few deaths of that name around Stepney and Whitechapel etc although there is a Susannah GILES death in 1876 aged 62 in Bethnal Green - which would have made her just 13 when she married in 1827, so its probably the wrong gal!

Its possible Susannah VANDOME was b 1803, Stepney to John & Elizabeth- there are others of the same name around Bethnal Green as well

I hope someone can find the family for you in the censuses

Cheers
Kiwi

That just goes to show you can't trust IGI - just as so many have said!

In that case, the death is probably correct as I mentioned above!

Cheers

so maybe the marriage was 4/2/1837?

Any suggestions on how to find the parents names? There are several Susannahs in IGI b 1815/1816 but need the father's name to know which is the right one.

Thanks for that Kiwi. Glad to see that one Kiwi can help another

I have a family in Bethnal Green at about the same time & they all seemed to have a daughter Eliza - a number of whom are on the IGI both for births and marriages. It's not a matter of "trusting" the IGI, but finding the right parish record. Like any transcription, it could be a transcription error or an original error of fact. Your record was an extracted record & it may be a transcription error or may be another couple of the same names. Records from the IGI can always be checked by ordering the film at your local LDS centre.

Was he a silk weaver?
From my limited experience 90% of Bethnal Green folks at that time were silk weavers  ;D

I think the occupation starts with Silk (cannot see the rest)
the lass seems to be Mealie (pet name perhaps) and I think her age is 2
The address may be Brick lane (from previous page)

Hi Jono,

I think Trish is right - its best to order the Film via your local FHC - if you have one that is- you will get the father's name with more certainty..WM & Susannah ( nee FORECAST m 1803 Stepney ) had lots of children and the name Lydia used twice..no record for Jacob's marriage on IGI but he was born to Jacob ...and ....SUSANNAH! Jacob was christened aged 7 in 1762 St Botolph- to Jacob and Jane. The first recording of a Jacob VANDAME was in 1593 - Devon.

I checked out Susannah FORECAST - and there is one line that has Amelia as a name:

SUSANNA MARY AMELIA AUGUSTA FORECAST  b 1769 to Benjamin and Mary

The  one born 1782 had parents Thomas and Lydia..

none of this helps determine who your Susannah belongs to of course...

My guess is the family was French Huguenot / Walloon..my family was and they lived in BG and were silk weavers!

In fact, with that thought, I googled the name and there is a fantastic book online which even has a short Tree mentioning VANDOME - and it is MOST likely they were FH/Walloon..go to:

You will have a heap of fun researching this name..there is another branch on the web as well:

http://www.bluehand.co.uk/

click on 'V'

Its possible your family came from Calais ( also where my GALIEGUE family came from !)

I noticed on one website a VANDOME attended a Jewish school in the late 1800's.....

Good luck!

Thanks Guys

I have now eliminated the Susannah b 1816 as i found her marriage on IGI to a John thomas Green 27/10/1839 . My susannah married Alfred Giles (from Amelia's birth cert). with that information i have already unearthed a heap of information from GenesReunited and Rootsweb which is great.

Ken thanks for the census which gives some leads on Alfred Giles.
