Title: Mary Agnes Hoy 1860 census please
Post by: Maddie on Sunday 18 February 07 00:43 GMT (UK)
Hi

Could I ask if any one is able to do an 1860 census look up for me.

I'm looking for a Mary Agnes Hoy born Georgia c1857.

In 1881 she is in Edinburgh Scotland married to a Michael Giblin. They were married in 1874 in Edinburgh.

I am assuming that Mary's family may have emigrated to America before she was born & either they or she on her own returned to England sometime prior to her marriage.

I would be very grateful for any help to discover who her parents were & if they do originate from UK.

As always, many thanks in advance.

Regards
Maddie

Maddie,

The closest I have come is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a Mary Hoy, 2 months old, born in Georgia, father William, 42, farmer, born in SC (presumably South Carolina), Ellin, 30, seamstress, born Georgia, James, 15, Thomas, 12, Jacob, 10, John, 8, William, 6, and George, 4. Could this be them?

Hi Kath

Many thanks for your reply, it certainly sounds as if it could be them but I'm not sure.

I'm actually doing this for my friend who has only just started on her tree after finding her Grans birth cert in amongst an old box of papers.

Her Gran was born in Edinburgh to Mary Agnes Hoy & Michael Giblin in 1880 & the birth cert also has the date of marriage for the parents. This was 1874.

Which means, if it is the right Mary on the US census, she would only have been about 14 at marriage, is this possible. ???

This is my first venture into US & Scottish ancestry so I'm a bit lost.  I would appreciate any advice. Would it be possible for you to see if the Mary you have found in the 1860 is still there in the 1870. Perhaps I should try & find her on a passenger list returning to UK.

Again, many thanks & I shall keep this family in mind. I'm grateful for any help.

Regards
Maddie

No problem.

She could have possibly been married at 14ish (although really young). I was about to respond that it is more likely they got the age wrong, but that's kind of hard with an infant.  Good luck and let me know if I can be of any more help.

Hi Kath

Thanks again, I did wonder if the age was wrong for Mary Agnes. I have tried to find the same family on the 1870 index but they don't appear to be there.

I definitely can't find them on the 1880. My 1881 census discs have the 81 Scottish census on them & that is where I found her age of 24 & her birth in Georgia. Mind you, she has a 6 year old daughter on there. :-\

Would you know if there is any likelyhood that the whole family could have gone to Scotland. I realize that the time period is slap on the American Civil War, I'm not very hot on American history but do know that Alabama is very much South.

I think my friend is going to have to get the marriage cert from 1874 & hope the father is on it. If it's William & a farmer then we have cracked it.

Not only is there the American & Scottish sides, Michael Giblin, the husband, was Irish. ??? I'm glad the majority of mine are all Herts, Bucks & Beds, UK.

I see you have Keeley in your names from Ireland. One of my ancestors married a KEELY from Dublin, I wonder if it's the same name just a different spelling. :)

Many thanks again & if you should think of anything that might help I will be very grateful.

My Keeley was also spelled Kealy and probably many other different ways  ;D ;D. I dont' know much about her as of yet. I know she came from Carlow and on some of her children's baptismal records there are a number of Kealys as sponsors. She came, married, from Ireland to US, so with the way researching in Ireland is, it will probably be a while before I find anything on her. Funny, her name was Anne, and two of the sponsors for her children were Anne Kealy, but different women. If the godfathers are her brothers, they both married women named Anne. Nothing like making research easy.  :o ;D

I think it odd if the family all came over, but on the other hand, if the father was actually from the United Kingdom, maybe he didn't have any reason to want to send his sons to war.

Good luck and if I think of anything I will let you know.

Hi Kath

I've had a thought, is there any chance the S/C for where William was born could have been Scotland & not South Carolina. ??

Do you think Ellen could have been his second wife, if she was the mother of the elder 2 boys & her age is only 30 then she also had an early marriage. ???

It made me think when you said about not wanting his sons to fight.

My Keely is only related by marriage so I haven't ventured into Ireland either. I just keep hoping I can find a descendant who is also researching the family. ;)

Hi Maddie

Hope you've had a chance to access their MC in Scotland.  You can easily view it online from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and from this obtain both parents names, fathers occupation, and whether the parents were deceased at the time of Agnes marriage.

Don't be fooled by the spelling.  You'll find this record indexed as such:

GIBLIN, MICHAEL and  HOEY, MARY AGNES  in ST ANDREW, EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

Sad to say it's not looking like the correct US census record.  Hopefully the parents as named will turn up on the IGI or even in Scotland themselves.  You definitely should start with the MC and work from that though before trying to jump to the US.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Jean

Thank you, yes, I think the marriage cert is the next step for my friend & thank you for the index ref.

I do know that on my friends Gran's birth cert from 1880 the name is Hoy. That is, unless she has read it wrong. :-\

I much appreciate any help.

It could have been Scotland, I did think that, but like Jean said, the marriage cert is the best first bet. I have one from Scotland, and it was a wonderful resource, giving me bride's and groom's parents' names and occupations. and that was all right off of Scotlandspeople, never had to move from my computer  ;D. Aah technology!! ;) And it looks like she found it, so good luck. I am happy to do a lookup again with more names if that will help, once you have seen the certificate.

Hi Kath

I wonder would you be kind enough to do another look up for me in the 1860 census.

Parents of Mary Agnes HOEY were James Hoey (a gardener) & Jane Hoey nee Johnson. Both were deceased at the time of Mary A's marriage.

No matter if you can't find them, many thanks for your help.

I had a look around and couldn't find them with a quick search and couldn't find anyone who would fit. Do you know if Mary Agnes had any siblings?

I did a quick search on Scotlandspeople and came up with 3 deaths for a James Hoey and 4 for a Jane between 1860 and 1874. I don't have any credits right now, but that might be worth a search, to see if they are Mary Agnes's parents.

Hi Kath

Once again, thank you for you help. At least I can be pretty sure they had returned to Scotland before 1860, or at least, left the US.

Unfortunately I don't know if Mary A had any siblings.

Those deaths sound possibles, many thanks for that & your time.
