Some of my ancestors & relatives. living in Glamorgan in the 19th century, appear to have been married in register offices.
However, these were mostly Roman Catholics, I believe, and I think that they would also have had a church wedding.
Does anyone know, please ~ where might 19th century Catholics from Merthyr Tydfil / Dowlais and Mountain Ash have married?
Thanks in advance!

Hello Tricia
I can't answer your specific question but I can recommend a little book that can.
Catholic Missions and Registers 1700-1880 by Michael Gandy lists all known RC chapels, etc, the dates that the surviving registers cover, where they are located (some are likely to be with the Parish Priest still) and what, if any, transcriptions are available. It is in 6 (slim) volumes; the one that you want is No 3, Wales & the West of England.
You should be able to buy a copy from any good genealogical book supplier; alternatively you can order directly from Michael:
Michael Gandy, 140 Hampden Way, Southgate, London, N14 5AX
Please send him an s.a.e. for details.
The series is well worth purchasing if you have Roman Catholic ancestors.
Good luck
Colin

Roman Catholic Churches, Wales and Hereford are listed in the Year Book of the Welsh Provence and is available from the CTS Bookshop at St Davids Cathedral, Charles Street, Cardiff.

Thanks again, Avoca. I now have the book recommended by Colin. Would the other one still be of use to me, do you think?

Hi there, could I butt in with a related question. My husbands great grandparents were Catholic & married in St Dabutius Chapel, Treforest, Pontypridd in 1888. Do you know if that's the same as St Dyfrigs which was also in existence then & is still there. It seems unlikely that there were two catholic churches in the same place.
Incidentally the marriage certificate I have had the Registry office as the place of marriage then this was crossed out & the chapel name inserted. Its signed by both the priest & the registrar.

Yes, St Dubritius and St Dyfrigs are the same place ~ my parents married there and it's still there. Most of my RC Welsh relatives have been married there in recent years.
There are other spellings, too:
Eg. Dubricius and Dubric
Have a look here:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11562a.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubricius
From Wikipedia:
Saint Dubricius (also known in his native Welsh as Saint Dyfrig and in corrupt Norman-French as Saint Devereux) was the 6th century evangelist of Ergyng and much of South Wales.
I understand that only a limited number of RC priests are also registrars, whereas most (if not all?) Anglican priests are also registrars. I think my cousins had to arrange for a separate registrar to 'conduct the civil marriage' ~ in a side chapel, perhaps, while the priest, of course, conducted the spiritual service.

Thanks for that. I know St Dyfrigs quite well, its just down the road from us. I thought it was likely to be the same place and, for once, the Welsh name is much easier to say ...and to spell.. than the latin!

I wonder if we might someday find a link between your in-laws and my ancestors. It's possible. ???

The current year book gives telephone numbers and Email addresses.

Thank you! :)

MOUNTAIN ASH: OUR LADY OF LOURDES 1874
That's the one. I have now seen one of the baptismal certificates.
I tried to find the church on Google maps ~ or a photo online ~ but to no avail??!!
Does anyone know exactly where it is, by any chance, please?
I missed it when I visited Mountain Ash in the summer :(
Thanks :)
