Title: Completed James Arnold from Tyrone to Montreal c 1850
Post by: regross on Friday 23 February 07 05:27 GMT (UK)
James was the sole member of his large family to go to Canada when his parents and 8 siblings went to Australia. He would have benn either Curch of Irelkand or Presbyterian.

In 1895 his son George Arnold wrote from Montreal to the police in Melbourne Victoria Australia  looking for his father's family. George also had a brother Robert and a sister whose married surname was Marjesson.

Any help in finding any records of his miration would be most welcome.

What year was he born, regross? Do you have a name for his wife...
There is a possible entry on the 1881/1901, but need more information....
He was born Ireland, correct? and do you have a first name for his wife?

We're probably also looking for the surname "Margesson", although no
surname similar in 1881 or 1901...
;D J.J.

Oh...and welcome to rootschat!  :)

Thankyou for your response.

From his father's death certificate  in July 1870 James was listed as being 46 years old. This would mean his est dob 1823-1825.

He was still alive in 1895 when his son wrote to the police in Victoria.

I have no information on his wife at all.

The information on his children was obtained from 2 sources

1. The letter written by George and
2. A newspaper report on the death of a Gerald Clifford Marjerroson  26/12/1916 in Smith Falls Ontario.

His coffin was carried by his cousins George Arnold and Robert Arnold who were conductors on the CPR.
(George Arnold wrote in his letter that he was a conductor on the GTR.)

Clifford had a sisters Pearl and HAzel. HE was born 23/6/1893.

I have George's 1901 census entry

George Arnold - born April 9, 1858 - age 42 - born Toronto - protestant
>- conductor - wages - 800
>
>   Anna - wife - born Dec. 13, 1864 - age 36 - born Quebec - English
>   John - son - born - Nov.11, 1883 - age 17 -born Quebec - commis.
>(commissioner ?) - wages - 120
>   Edward - son - born Feb. 20, 1885 - age 16 - born Quebec - commis. -
>wages - 120
>   Catherine - daughter - born - Oct. 18, 1887 - age 13 - born Quebec
>   Joshua - son -  born - Nov. 11, 1890 - age 10 - born Quebec
>   James - son - born - Sept.29, 1892 - age 8 - born Quebec
>   Agnes - daughter - born - Mar.28, 1895 - age 6 - born Quebec
>   Adam - son - born - Oct 15, 1896 - age 5 - born Quebec
>   Robert - son - born - Oct. 20, 1900 - born Quebec

I am sorry but that is all teh inforamtion I have that I am certain of at this time.

Hi...I was surprised to hear that you had found George in 1901...
also it still isn't established where James came from?  I can't find the entry as I wanted to see if he listed English or Irish...
Only one James Arnold but  b. 1831 Ireland in Montreal 1881...with wife Mary and one son Wm...but won't put everything up here to confuse the issue...as it seems we should be looking for James in Ontario to begin with as that is where his son George was born...J.J.

I know how hard it is to look at records such as the  early census' with very liitle information.

James Arnolds' grandfather was WILLIAM Arnold.

If James'ame had not been on his father's deaath certificate and if I had not foulnd the letter from his son George we wold not have known about him at all.

As the rest of his family came to Australia in 1850 I would speculate that it would have been somewhere around this time that he went to Canada.

They most certainly came from Ireland as teh parishes etc are listed on teh marraige and death certificates.

But for me to research properly I feel I will need to go teh Ontario and to Montreal to pursue this branch of the family.

thanks for you interest and aassistance.

If he was here in 1851, you can find him on the census...the whole site is free for 3 days...
http://content.ancestry.ca/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1061&o_iid=27113&o_lid=27113&o_it=27113

The 1881 census for Canada is here,
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

and the 1901 and 1911 are here, the 1911 not totally indexed yet...
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

If you go up to the top of the page, under Emigrants to Canada we also have a resources board with some information on Quebec...Unfortunately we haven't a lot of information other than that at the moment, but more and more is online all the time...

You never know, just having the query online can get some answers if a living rellie finds it......J.J.

Hi, Karen...
this query is looking for a James, born Ireland 1823-1825
wife unknown...
a son to James- George Arnold - born April 9, 1858  Toronto
another son Robert... born?
and perhaps the wife of _________Marjerrison who was perhaps a relative
they may have been raised in Quebec...re: earlier censuses

But I haven't found a thing...the ones born Ireland in 1901 and 1881 Ont or Que.  are born much later...getting the mother's name would help.

corrected, hopefully as per below

Hi all,

Just a note - I don't think the sister was Gerald Clifford's wife - he was single according to his death cert.

George and Robert were referred to as his "cousins", not his brothers-in-law (I think they would have been called that, if that was indeed the relationship).  This suggests they were related more distantly, like perhaps their sister was married to another Marjesson.

Well, looked through the Ontario Marriage records for Marjerison marriages - there are several, seems to have been a name in Stormont County, but none to an Arnold.

But, using the Montreal directories I have come up with some interesting things...
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html

Some tidbits (the directories for every year are on the site, but I will just type out some highlights here)

1880
James Arnold, labourer, 106 Grand Trunk ( there seems to be employee housing on a street called Grand Trunk)

1885
George Arnold, conducter GTR, 153 Grand Trunk
James Arnold, Watchman GTR, 106 Grand Trunk

1890
George Arnold, conducter GTR, 305 Grand Trunck
James Arnold, Wachman GTR, 305 Grand Trunk

1895
Mrs Mary Arnold, widow of James, 134 Grand Trunk
George Arnold, conducter GTR, 4 Soulanges

Mary disappears from the directories in 1897.
George is at 4 Soulanges until 1898, then back to 295 Grand Trunk in 1899 and 1900.

So... Based on that info, James (born 1831 Ireland) and Mary (born 1842 Quebec) can be found in Montreal in the 1881 (available on familysearch).  No George in the household though.  But as to whether or not is is "your" James, that is another question, although it does look likely.

Hope this helps!

Correction:

Mary Arnold does not "disappear", but is only missing for one or two years.  Then there is a Mrs. Mary Arnold, widow of James, who lives at 82 Arcade for many years and is in the 1911 census at that address.  She has the right age and birthplace to be the same Mary as the wife of James in 1881, but since she is alone in the household in 1911 there are no family links to follow-up on.  No way to tell if it is the same person.  I can't find her in 1901, although she is in the directory at 82 Arcade.

Wow,

Such a lot of information to digest.

Yes I think this might be my family of Arnolds particularly witht he association of the letter from George stating that he was a conductor on the GTR.

Re GeEorge on 1881 census I feel he was boarding with a family of Joseph Tomlinson.

in Amherst Essex Ontario

George Arnold aged 25 birth place Ontario.
est dob =1856
Family history film 1375916

According to George's letter in 1895 his father was in very poor health and it is perhaps around this time that James died.

All this is very helpful if not conclusive.

thanks again
