I can only echo the last comment — wonderful photo!
I am going to take a wild guess at 1915, but have a look at these sites

Hi Seonaid and welcome to Rootschat,
Would just like to say that you have a fantastic photograph here which records a part of social history (far better than the studio posed ones that I have). Because of the freedom which the photographer has allowed the group to have in the way that they are "posing" I would say that this may well have been an itinerate photographer going from town to town, village to village in the hope to drum up business, and when you think of how many people there are in this photograph it could have been a few bob or two that he picked up from this one photograph. As for a date, well it is very hard to try and attempt to place an accurate one to this study but going by the lad leaning up against the wall of the building (4th figure on the right) and the eldest girl in the picture, I would hazard a guess and say that this was taken from about 1902 to about 1910ish. The soft felt hat with the wide brim that the lad is wearing has the style and form to it that resembles those that were worn by the local yeomanry and it is simular in type and style of that worn during the Boer War period and shortly after. The style of dress of the eldest girl also indicates to me that this picture was taken within the time frame that I have given for it , the top that she has on has really nothing that jumps out at me straight away in the way of dating but as children where dressed as young adults at the time this date line would fit as women would have been dressed in a simular fashion for this period (albeit that they would have had either a hat or shawl on). One other bit that I have picked up on, if this was taken in Scotland (although it could have been taken at any coastal village harbour in the UK) then it was not taken on a Sunday as the central figure is baiting his line by the looks of it and there would have been no work carried out on the sabbath at all (doesn't help with the dating but I thought that I would throw it in anyway).

Hello All, thank you all very much for your replies and help.
Kali I'll not shoot you down in flames ;D
Dennford, it is Scotland ,the north east just north of Aberdeen
Tomkin some great finishes there.
I'm not 100% sure but the man sitting in the middle mending nets could be my great grandad Andrew Duthie.Interestingly the young lad in the cap to his left leaning on the shed looks very like my brother but then maybe I'm just wishing that that is Andrews son Andrew bn 1879 but drowned in 1891. If only photos could talk.
old rowley thank you very much for your reply ,very informative :)
I have posted on the Aberdeenshire forum the same picture and also one that I know for sure is my great grandad.Do you think they are the same person?
Many thanks,Seonaid

my thoughts that this photo is not American but rather from Scotland or Wales. The people do not look as though their clothes are American.

that'l teach mi not to oppen me gob waynt it.
Mind you, I did say that I couldn't see any reason for thinking it was America.

EVERY ONE A GEM !!. Been watching this one with interest, and so have quite a few others it would seem. Tomkin's coloured ones are fantastic. Colours look so natural, I can't figure out how they're blended so accurately.
Brilliant effort every0ne,
Dixie.

I've only just seen this thread. What a wonderful photograph.
We have some in our local collection like this but from the West Coast - more women and the boys are older :D My immediate thoughts were circa 1900 - give or take 5 years or so which I see Old Rowley has also suggested.
I've been to Crudden Bay, Denn :) When we lived in Aberdeen.

Hi y'all
As Seonaid believes the oldest chap seated in the middle to be her g-grandad (1842-1927) I'd guess that he's into his 60's making the photo around the early 1900's.
What say you?
Michelle ;D

Hi Seonoid
Not sure if you are aware but there are photos and comments of Andrew Duthie on Facebook page ‘Cruden Bay memories’. Old photos with his nickname ‘Kilty Onzie’???
Perhaps if you join this page and ask for more info on him, members on this page may be able to help.
Interestingly my great ancestors lived at 3 Green Street Cruden Bay too. In fact my Great Grandfather William Phillips died there too (1945)

Not been as regular a visitor of late, so I have only just seen this pic. Its very much in the same style as one of my favourite photographers of all time, Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. LINK (https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Frank+Meadow+Sutcliffe+Photography&FORM=IRMHRS)

errrrrr……. This topic goes back to 2007 ???

" You did some really good restores though, Tomkin "
I don't like to be reminded of 2007 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
That's the year my pet goldfish died. :( :( :( :(
I had to buy a Budgie and that didn't live long either.
Then someone told me the secret. You're supposed to feed 'em :o :o :o

But you weren't supposed to keep the Budgie in the goldfish bowl, without emptying out the water first. :-\ :-\ :-\

Now he tells me ::) ::) ::) Actually I thought it was quite good at the breast stroke. ;D ;D ;D

If you compare it with today's Google Earth image, the photoghraph looks as if it was taken in Harbour Street, Port Erroll, Aberdeenshire, between number 20, and the offset cottage, between no's 20 and 21 looking South. In the skyline, you can see the golf course horizon, which is basically the same as it is today. The bridge in the photograph, has been replaced with the newer one. I would suggest that they were probably Salmon fishers. But that's only an opinion from an Aberdeenshire lad.
Malky
-
Very good Malky :D
-
Further, the bridge, "in the background" crossing onto the golf course is the "Ladies Bridge", which crosses the Water of Cruden. It was built in 1922, paid for, by the ladies of the village, so they could get to the beach, hence the name.
So the photograph is more than likley dated post 1922.

Malky!! I already said "very Good"
So don't Milk it Malky ::) ::) ::)
But still very good ;D ;D ;D ;D

A salmon-fishers bothy might explain the coracle's? ;D
Skoosh.

Could I direct you to the date Old Rowley gave in Reply #9 - ish. He dated it as 1902-1910.
He's a wiz at dating and I'd agree with him- clothing suggests that period.
West coast salmon is best 8)
